The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a report that may make people want to hold off on casual oral sex, especially if they're the type of person who can't help but think about throat cancer when they're sexually aroused. Michelle Fay Cortez explains why on Bloomberg.com:

A study in 300 adults found that those infected with the human papillomavirus, or HPV, who had oral sex with more than six partners, were three times as likely to get throat cancer. The research was included in a package of studies and commentary on the virus in today's issue of the journal.

Cortez quoted the researchers as saying that the results of the study "provide a rationale for HPV vaccination in both boys and girls."

Makes sense to me, if these findings hold up. But I'm sure conservative-Christian groups--in their zeal to promote the "Virginity or Death!" cause--will work to see that widespread vaccination doesn't happen.

(Editor's Note: Dan Savage writes more about this in the May 17 issue of the Weekly.)

A bunch o' good organizations—you can get the whole list at StoptheSharks.com—are banding together for a community forum from 1:30 to 5 p.m. next Wednesday, May 16, at Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road. The goal of the community forum, according to the Web site?

Come to our Tucson workshop to learn about our community's vulnerabilty and discuss what we can do to end shoddy lending practices in Arizona. Consumers can best protect themselves by becoming more informed.

Join us for the discussion, on May 16, on how predatory lending is degrading our state.

"Half the states safeguard their citizens from the predatory practices of  unscrupulous lenders, but not Arizona. Let's work together to change that."

Predatory lending can happen to anyone. We'll hear from people who have been directly affected.

Avoid high fee loans, payday loans with excessive rates and prepayment penalties. Learn alternatives and strategies that are currently being implemented to combat lenders.

It’s official: In case some of you haven’t noticed, chivalry is seriously dead. I was hoping that it was just a cliché, and that there was hope out there for men to be the gentlemen they are, but alas, I was wrong.

And that pisses me off.

Exhibit A: Today, I was helping my sister move out of her dorm room, as the UA academic year has nearly ended. With no strong males in sight, I was forced to carry her bulky, extremely heavy TV down three flights of stairs and more than 300 feet out to the parking lot. Meanwhile, a freshman football player (a running back who is 6 feet tall and 203 pounds, muscular), who shall remain nameless, stood by and watched me struggle, grunt, tear up and nearly drop the TV set three times. Not ONCE did this cocky athlete offer me help. He just thought it would be more amusing to stand by, watch, and snicker at my attempt.

Once again, chivalry is dead and gone. All you ladies out there, we are without hope.  All you men out there, you disappoint me.

This just in from AAA Arizona: The price of gas in Arizona continues to climb, nearing record levels. The good news: Down here in Baja Arizona, our average prices are the lowest in the state.

Currently in Arizona, the price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.079 per gallon, a four cent increase from last week. Arizona’s current statewide average is less than two pennies from last summer’s highest fuel price of $3.094 per gallon and five cents less than Arizona’s all-time retail high of $3.131 per gallon. Across the nation, drivers are paying an average of $3.037 per gallon, which is also an increase of four cents from last week. Drivers in Flagstaff broke their retail fuel record on Tuesday with $3.221 per gallon, but have since dropped to $3.192 per gallon. Tucson drivers continue to hold on to the lowest fuel price in the state at $2.984 per gallon.

Good thing The Range’s summer vacation will be by plane and train, not automobile. And how about you? Is the price of gas encouraging you to drive less? Explore our recently beefed-up bus service? Or maybe put down a deposit on a Smart Car?

The Washington Times examines how Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl is the new go-to guy for immigration reform. As reporter puts Stephen Dinan puts it:

While the White House was working with Sen. John McCain, Arizona's other senator, Jon Kyl, emerged this year as the most important player in the immigration debate, showing that even as the Congress has grown more liberal with Democrats in control, the immigration debate has shifted to the right.

It's also a recognition that as Mr. Kyl goes, so go a number of Republicans.

"If it's good enough for Kyl, it's going to be good enough for a lot of conservatives," said Rep. Jeff Flake, Arizona Republican and one of the top House lawmakers pressing for a bill this year.

Can Kyl bring along the crowd that wants all 12 million illegal immigrants kicked right out of the country? Hard-line groups such as Federation for American Immigration Reform are already using the A word:

But opponents of such a bill say Kyl is in a difficult position, given his own opposition to amnesty.

"Jon Kyl is being placed in an impossible position that can neither serve the nation's interests, nor his own," said Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

"When the president of the United States taps you on the shoulder and asks you to be his point man, it's hard to refuse. But at the same time, Sen. Kyl's record makes it very clear that he knows that no matter how you dress it up, any legislation that allows illegal aliens to remain in this country is an amnesty."

Congrats to the Canyon del Oro Dorados baseball team. The Range got out to see the Dorados--including nephew Taylor Nintzel--fight back to overcome the No. 1 seeded Amphi Panthers 9-8 in the state Class 4A Division I quarterfinals last night at Hi Corbett Field. The Dorados play Sahauro at Tempe Diablo Stadium Friday for spot in the state championship .

Details from the Star's Casey Crowe here, but we we're still astonished by Dorado Dylan Cota-Robles's two-run shot out of the deepest part of the outfield. Go, Dorados!
