Thank the gods for digital-recording devices that allow you to put the wee ones to bed and catch up on shows like the Grammys last Sunday. What's even better is being able to forward through meaningless dribble, like the lavish display of affection given to Coldplay while Kings of Leon were snubbed (should have let them perform at least). I wasn't happy.

But our quick-Grammys run-through perked up when MIA performed with Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Wayne and Kanye West. The best movement on stage: MIA's 9-month pregnant belly! Forget Demi Moore's pregnancy-magazine cover on Vanity Fair from long, long ago. A true feminist image that should make all working women proud--watching a very pregnant woman work and not hide away! She worked it!

After that, I think we zoomed through the show, epecially when Coldplay got more attention. It was cool to see legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden on stage and what shocker--I didn't know one of his daughters married Jack Black.

See, it's good to watch these shows--especially if they've been recorded.

"Fidelity": Don't Divorce... from Courage Campaign on Vimeo.

Remember Kenneth Starr, the former U.S. Solicitor General who led the legal inquisition of President Bill Clinton, allowing Americans to learn more about cigars and stuff? Fun times.

Well, Starr is back leading a new kind of inquisition--this time against gay marriage, specifically marriages in California before Prop 8 passed. He's also defending Prop 8 before the California Supreme Court.

In December, Starr and his clients filed court briefs defending the legality of the proposition in reponse to challenges filed by gay rights activists. The cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles are siding with the activists and getting in on the legal action.

Everyone is heading into court in March, when oral arguments are expected to begin. Opponents call the proposition a revision of the state Constitution, which technically requires a two-thirds vote of the Legislature or a constitutional convention before it can go before voters. Prop 8 headed to the ballot after a signature drive.

Courage Campaign is collecting online signatures for a letter to the California Supreme Court. More than 120,000 signatures have been collected thus far.

The Casbah Teahouse may be pulling up stakes after 13 years at 628 N. Fourth Ave.

Citing the economy, rising food prices and slowing business due to construction on the Fourth Avenue underpass, the eatery’s owner said she is currently looking for ways to keep the doors open, but will close at the end of the month if none are found.

"Right now, the whole world economy is really struggling, and The Casbah is a microcosm of the macrocosm," said owner and operator Carol Ann Krueger. "We’re just looking for a way to change ourselves to keep up with the times."

Krueger said she has scheduled a closing celebration from 7 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28. She is currently seeking investors, partnerships or ideas from the community in an effort to continue on.

If a solution is not found, Krueger said she may move the business to Boulder, Colo., where an investor has expressed interest in helping continue the Casbah’s legacy.

The Casbah Teahouse opened at its current location in 1995 and employs about 10 people. Known locally for eco-conscious attitude and vegetarian fare, the eatery closes each summer and opens up shop at dozens of West Coast festivals, where it has a loyal following among festival-goers as well.

Attention, downtown boosters: You might want to schedule a trip to the state Capitol on Wednesday.

The Senate Finance Committee is set to review Tucson’s Rio Nuevo spending, which is the first step toward eliminating it altogether.

The Finance Committee won’t be voting on a bill; instead, they’ll be examining Tucson’s progress with downtown revitalization and making a recommendation to the Senate Appropriations Committee, which has the job of drawing up a fix for a 2010 shortfall that’s been estimated at $3 billion.

Rio Nuevo is not going to be an easy sell on Wednesday afternoon. The Senate Finance Committee includes Sen. Ron Gould, a fiscal hawk from Lake Havasu, and Sen. Barbara Leff, who has had it in for Rio Nuevo for years. As we recall, it started after Republican Kathleen Dunbar, a close pal of Leff, went up there to badmouth the city of Tucson after voters kicked her off the City Council back in 2005.

The panel also includes Sen. Ken Cheuvront, a Democrat who has frequently railed against special taxing districts.

It doesn't help that some GOP representatives from Southern Arizona--we're looking your way, Frank Antenori--have dismissed Rio Nuevo as a "boondoggle."

The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m.

Where is Pima County's stimulus package?

Word on the street is that some folks in Pima County Development Services are getting the ax next Friday the 13th. Great day to always associate with losing your job. While California state employees are being asked to take furloughs, and the UA is contemplating the cost-saving measure, one has to wonder when furloughs will arrive in Pima County. My county-employed husband and I have thought about what we'd do if he was furloughed --like showing up at my mom's house every day just around dinner time. I'd also put together a long list of errands my husband can do on bike to save gas. Seriously: We are making furlough plans.

So while we're all thinking about the economy and making plans for days off we'd rather get paid for (no worries; this house feels lucky we both remain employed), how did I miss the news that Michael Phelps got caught smoking out from what looks like a pretty nice high-tech Olympic bong? Bongs look that nice now days?

Talk about furlough: Phelps got dropped by Kellogg's, and McDonalds is thinking he's a bad influence.

Yet, think about how McDonalds has benefited from going 24-hours--they are making a nice profit from some late night munchies.

Maynards Market and Kitchen at 400 N. Toole Ave. has brought Addam Buzzalini on board as the new executive chef, according to Richard Oseran, who owns the restaurant/market and the Hotel Congress across the street.

“He’s very talented, he’s very passionate and he’s going to take us to where we want to go,” Oseran said, adding that Buzzalini will eventually head up operations at The Cup Café inside Hotel Congress as well.

Buzzalini was the chef at jaxKitchen (7286 N. Oracle Road) before his new gig downtown. Prior to that, he was the executive chef at Seattle’s Collins Pub and a souse chef at Café Presse, also in Seattle.

“My philosophy is everything is fresh, everything comes from scratch. I don’t use frozen food or dried herbs or anything like that,” Buzzalini said, adding that he uses locally grown produce and meats whenever possible. “You could put it like this: I live downtown, and there’s a need for something unique and spectacular down here,” he said. “So we’re definitely going to kick it up a bit.”

Plans are also underway to offer some of Buzzalini’s creations – such as an authentic Neapolitan pizza dough – and a number of the cheeses and meats he uses in his kitchen as take-away items in the market at Maynards, which already features an ample selection of locally-produced items.

Buzzalini will unveil an abbreviated menu – which includes a slow-braised beef short rib osso buco and a local-ale roasted half chicken - for dinner on Thursday, Feb. 5, with a fully revamped menu coming out several weeks later.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to see the bonus footage available to Pima County Comcast subscribers during the Super Bowl yesterday, the clip is now available on YouTube.

There's a bit of censoring to, um, block the kick, as it were, but you still might find it NSFW.
