Look for the yellow banner.
  • Look for the yellow banner.

The yellow overhead light in the dining area at Molcas Mexican Grill makes everything look like an eerie, colorized version of itself. The same butterscotch light gives the place a supernatural glow at night, illuminating the numerous diners who go there for tortas and fine plates of carne asada.

Standing there on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Grant Road, with the hotdog grill warming up and mariachi music honking in the air, all is right in the world. A breakfast burrito comes filled with properly scrambled eggs and a dollop of refried beans. The salsa bar is well-stocked, and the ice-cold bottle of Coca Cola makes the morning chill insignificant. One wants for nothing.

Molcas opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m. almost every day. The menu board is full of burritos, tortas, fritangas and all the other items you expect from a food truck. Prices range from $2.25 to about $6.

If you can’t find it, look for the yellow “Tortas” banner flapping in the breeze, or just turn your nose to the wind and let the smell of the grill be your guide.

Sure, Bobby Farrell, who died from a post-concert heart attack this morning, didn't actually sing on Boney M's records (producer Frank Farian, the guy behind Milli Vanilli, took care of that part), but he sure could dance.

Below the cut, my personal favorite Boney M track, a cover of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" that seems to miss the songwriter's intent entirely.

Craig McDermott, who has done a terrific job following the controversy over the candidates for the Independent Redistricting Commission, brings us an update about today's meeting, in which the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments decided against making any changes to the list of finalists that will be forwarded to legislative leaders. The gist:

The Arizona Commission on Appellate Court Appointments met today to consider the "Communication from House Speaker Kirk Adams and Senate President-Elect Russell Pearce" - basically, they met to decide whether to reopen the nomination process for the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission because Pearce and Adams didn't like the list of candidates from which they will select two members of the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC).

Summary: NO, the Appellate Court Appointments Commission won't reopen the process.

Fox News' Megyn Kelly suggests calling people who enter the country illegally "undocumented" is like calling a rapist a "non-consensual sex partner." TPM has details here.

My personal favorite Megyn Kelly moment in recent weeks was Chait's blog entry here after the sex kitten posed for GQ. Photo may be NSFW.

The new issue of the Weekly features part two of our music critics opining on the best of 2010 (here's part one, in case you missed it), giving credit to artists like the National and Ariel Pink, while bizarrely ignoring the work of modern day pop geniuses like Taio Cruz and Ke$ha.

In the interest of equal time, here's DJ Earworm's mix of the Top 25 pop hits of the year. It turns out people were really into dancing in clubs this year.

Jim Meyer, the senior meteorologist at the Tucson office of the National Weather Service, says the first snow showers are already starting in the Rincon and Catalina mountains, where some areas could see as much as 2 feet of snow before the winter storm moves out of the area.

“Right now, we’ve got a blizzard warning in the mountains,” said Meyers, adding that white-out conditions are expected for higher elevations.

The storm will drop snow at elevations about 5,000 feet through tonight, said Meyer. The warmest temperatures tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 30, will be at about 10 a.m., topping out at an estimated 48 degrees. Temperatures will drop the rest of the day, eventually dipping down to the 30s.

“In the valley (snow) could fall as low as 2,200 feet, which means we could have snowflakes in Tucson,” said Meyer. “Above 2,800 to 3,000 feet, you’ll see about 2 inches of snow."

The storm is expected to keep Tucson in a cold freeze through Friday morning, when precipitation and low temperatures could cause dangerous driving conditions, said Meyer.

While political polls are a mind-bending business of trying to determine what information is useful and what should be immediately dismissed, a new CNN/Opinion Research poll is interesting in that Sarah Palin isn't as popular with Republicans as you might imagine—and Barack Obama is recently a little more likable among Democrats.

"Among liberal Democrats, 85 percent say they want to see the party re-nominate Obama in 2012," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Among moderate Democrats, his support is almost that high."

In the battle for the GOP presidential nomination, the survey suggests Palin may have some work to do if she throws her hat in the ring. Only 49 percent of Republicans say that they are likely to support Sen. John McCain's running mate in 2008 for the Republican nomination in 2012.

"That's a huge 18-point drop since December of 2008, when two-thirds of GOPers said they were likely to support Palin. It also puts her well behind potential rivals Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, and a bit behind Newt Gingrich as well," adds Holland.

Two-thirds of Republicans questioned say they would likely support Huckabee as their nominee in 2012. The former Arkansas governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate is considering another bid for the White House. So is another candidate from the last election, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Fifty-nine percent of Republicans say they would likely support Romney. That number drops to 54 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, who is also contemplating a run for the White House.

It's cold out; there's a holiday coming up; and there are six pictures of adorable baby cheetahs to look at on The Washington Post's site.

Sure, they won't be so adorable when they're stalking you as prey someday, but right now, bask in the adorableness.

As a winter storm heads towards Tucson, we feel you, Alexander Wright. We all should be in Florida, getting tans on our backs.
