It's been nice outside lately, although we all know that won't last for long before the oppressive inferno-like heat kicks in. If you're having some sort of spring outdoor event soon, here's a drink you might consider serving courtesy of noted cocktail expert Sandra Lee involving kiwis and melon liqueur. Keep an eye out for the secret ingredient near the end. SPOILER ALERT: It's the liquid from a jar of canned jalapenos.

Dallas Green throws out the first pitch at Friday's spring training game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the L.A. Dodgers. Dallas' sister, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, was killed in the Jan. 8 assassination attempt on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords that left six dead and 13 wounded, including Giffords, who is recovering at a Houston hospital. Christina had dreamed of being the first girl to play in the major leagues and her little-league uniform number, No. 12, hung on the outfield wall, along with the names of the other Tucsonans killed in the shooting rampage.
Friday's game was a benefit for the Tucson Together fund, which will help victims of the shooting with legal, medical and other expenses. Find more information on the fund here.

Ian Murphy, the guy who pranked Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, is running for the New York congressional seat vacated by Craigslist cruiser Chris Lee. I don't know if I'm optimistic for his chances as a Green Party candidate to take the seat, but at very least, the guy has enough of a sense of humor to wear a funny sweater and read his notes from his hand, while still retaining some vague principles of what he would do if he wins.
Still, this video makes me a little sad for the forthcoming, and likely wildly dull, city elections. Sure, Ron Asta's mayoral candidacy is good for a few ready-made steak jokes, but otherwise, the races so far are lacking in actual personalities. There's still time, people. Get out there and make me some funny videos to post.

David Safier at Blog for Arizona suspects the fix is in to turn Mexican-American Studies into an elective course:
Last week, TUSD school board president Mark Stegeman wrote an op ed in the Star recommending the Mexican American Studies courses be removed from the core curriculum and be turned into electives. Now, I hear Superintendent John Pedicone is also pushing to change the program into a series of elective courses, and he's pretty sure he has the three votes on the Board to make it happen. In public, Pedicone is maintaining a neutral position on the core/elective issue, but statements he has made in less public circumstances make it sound like the fix is in.
Turning the Mexican American Studies courses into electives is a bad idea which will most likely gut the program or end it entirely. More on that in a later post. But right now, I have to ask, why?

The Arizona Department of Health Services released the final draft of the medical marijuana rules today.
According to the final draft, those who qualify for a medical marijuana patient card can begin registering for cards on April 14 online. ADHS will only accept online applications, no walk-ins. Before submitting an online application, the patient has to have a written certification from a doctor they have a patient-physician relationship with a medical doc, osteopath, or even a naturopath or homeopath. Once you qualify, you can get up to 2.5 ounces of pot in a 14-day period from a dispensary. If there isn't a dispensary in your area, a designated caregivers can grow marijuana for the patient's use—as long as there is no dispensary within 25 miles of the patient's house.
Yes, there are still fees, and they remain pretty steep—$150 for an initial ID card, although some patients may qualify for a $75 card fee if they participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. There is a $200 fee for a designated caregiver card. If you want to become a dispensary agent, you need a $500 fee for a qualifying card and $5,000 for a dispensary registration certificate.
Things to think about right after you go out and get your card ... the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act does not:
Authorize a person to undertake any task under the influence of marijuana that constitutes negligence or professional malpractice.Authorize possessing or using medical marijuana on a school bus, on the grounds of a preschool, primary school, or high school, or in a correctional facility.
Authorize smoking marijuana on public transportation or in a public place. Authorize operating, navigating, or being in actual physical control of a motor vehicle, aircraft, or motorboat while under the influence of marijuana.
A registered qualifying patient will not be considered to be under the influence of marijuana solely because of the presence of marijuana in the person's system that appears in a concentration insufficient to cause impairment.
Require a government medical assistance program or private health insurer to reimburse for costs associated with the medical use of marijuana.
Require an owner of private property to allow the use of marijuana on that property.
Require an employer to allow the ingestion of marijuana in the workplace.
Prevent a nursing care or other residential or inpatient healthcare facility from adopting reasonable restrictions on the provision, storage and use of marijuana by residents or patients.

Seems inevitable, really. I'm a little surprised Nicolas Cage hasn't been attached to Angry Birds: Holiday Edition: The Film Experience in IMAX 3-D already.

The second annual Festival en el Barrio Viejo ended with a bang with a performance from Calexico. A plethora of local and national musicians joined in on the performance, including iconic local artist Salvador Duran and the far-out Robyn Hitchcock. Calexico and friends blew minds last night. If you missed the show, or if you want to relive last night's performance, be sure to check out this slideshow featuring photographs from UA journalism students Josh Morgan and Keith Hickman-Perfetti. The song is Calexico's cover of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by the Flaming Lips.

The "Last Night Never Happened" app is $1.99 on the iTunes App Store, but the peace of mind that comes from instantly deleting all the stupid crap you posted last night on various social media platforms while intoxicated is priceless. It doesn't actually deleted the real-life debauchery you were posting about, but at least some of the evidence can be wiped away.
