The building that once housed the Rhino Pub has been repainted and revamped to make way for a new sports bar and restaurant called Knock Outs Round One Sports Bar and Grill.

Owner Nubia Bernal said today that work on the new joint at 1118 E. Sixth St. is more or less complete, and that the soft opening should take place tomorrow. She expects the grand opening to take place next week.

The name sort of gives it away, but there will be an emphasis on boxing and mixed-martial arts at Knock Outs Round One, although they’ll also be showing NFL, NBA and UA games.

“This place has a complete new identity,” Bernal said. “We are across the street from the UA, and will be catering to that crowd, but we’re also setting it up as a place where people can watch sports with their families.”

For food: Think steaks, hotwings, burgers and other American fare. Bernal also said the ribs she’ll be serving will go toe-to-toe with those served at any barbeque place in town. It sounds relatively affordable as well, with nothing on the menu more than $14.

In Ruben Navarrette's latest op-ed, he takes aim at NBC, even giving the broadcast company's acronym a new meaning: 'Nothing But Caucasians.'

Navarrette doesn't just pick on television executives, but he also throws in a nice jab at those darn nativists. The result are a few comments that reminded me of some of the lovely gems thrown around the Range from folks worried the Aztlan dream is beginning to take place.

And it is true even in the most heavily Latino city in the United States. According to the 2010 Census, Los Angeles is more than 48 percent Latino. And yet, at KNBC-TV, Channel 4, there are currently no Latino anchors. It's also the case that Latinos, including veteran on-air journalists, have been overrepresented in recent layoffs. Other stations in that market have long had at least one Latino anchor.

This rollback of diversity efforts reflects "a lack of commitment to the Latino community," wrote Michele Salcedo, president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, in a letter to Craig Robinson, the new chief diversity officer for NBCUniversal. According to a statement by Salcedo on the organization's website, Robinson assured her "that it is not his goal to be without Hispanic anchors, and he and station executives are continuing to recruit Hispanic anchors and on-air talent." He also promised that the anchor lineup would look different in six months, according to Salcedo.

Just out of curiosity, what was Robinson's last job before becoming the diversity chief at NBCUniversal? Answer: He was the president and general manager at KNBC in Los Angeles, where he oversaw the creation of the same problem he now promises to fix.

Time to change the channel.

I don't have to try to sell people houses in the midst of this terrible real estate market, so maybe I don't quite understand the marketing that goes into the realtor game, but I'm not sure I would factor whether or not my agent has a YouTube video of them talking in the car into my decision making process. That, however, doesn't seem to stop real estate agents from making these videos, and now someone with a strange obsession to collect them on one Tumblr site.

Mark Stegeman was ousted from his position as president of the TUSD governing board Tuesday night, four days after he testified at an administrative hearing as an expert witness for the state that not only does he believe the ethnic studies classes violate parts of the anti-ethnic studies law, but that the Mexican American Studies classes display cult-like behaviors.

Governing board member Miguel Cuevas was named president after a 3-2 vote to oust Stegeman. Stegeman and Hicks voted no. After the vote, Hicks introduced a motion to replace the clerk of the board — Judy Burns — with Stegeman. The motion died. End of story.

It's old news now, but in case you weren't there, you can see how the vote took place in a video below made by Three Sonorans' David Abie Morales.

Morales was also at the Democrats of Greater Tucson luncheon on Monday where Mexican American Studies director Sean Arce spoke on the beleaguered program. He was also asked to give his opinion on Stegeman's accusations that the classes are cult-like. Video of Arce's response is a must see:
