I wish I had more time to keep up with indie hip-hop since there seems to be a lot of great stuff out there, so the music of DC rapper/producer Oddisee was new to me, but his new largely instrumental album Rock Creek Park is a really enjoyable listen, especially if you like the funkier DJ Shadow tracks, for example. There's something really classic about the project, and while I've never been to the park he's paying tribute to, I'd imagine the album would make a great soundtrack for time spent in any park other than ours (with their obscene temperatures) right now.

The Range got a chance to mingle some of the UA College of Science’s upcoming talent at a reception at Etherton Gallery last night.

We hope to tell you more about the scientists—who are studying everything from how our memory works to the measurement of atoms—in the upcoming weeks, but we wanted to share a bit of news announced by College of Science Dean Joaquin Ruiz.

It appears the school will soon be opening a exhibition in the Rialto Building on Congress Street and Fifth Avenue. The space currently has a display of authentic replicas from King Tut’s tomb and has previously been home to Bodies: The Exhibition and artifacts from the Titanic.

Ruiz tells us he’s anticipating a long future in the Rialto Building. The first year will focus on the planetary sciences. Given all that the UA Lunar and Planetary Lab has done in outer space, there’s no shortage of material available, including those cool Mars photos that we keep posting here on The Range.

The downtown digs are not quite the science center that the UA tried to get off the ground as part of Rio Nuevo, but it’s a start—and another sign that downtown is, at long last, on the rebound.

Speaking of HiRISE, TW intern Allie Leach tracked down the above photo of the Bakhuysen Crater, located in Noachis Terra. The HiRISE Science Team tells us:

Large impact craters often have pits on their floors. Some of these (with raised rims) are later impacts, but some are thought to originate immediately after the crater forms when slurries of molten and broken rocks occupy the crater floor.

Bakhuysen Crater, located in Noachis Terra, is thought to be the largest crater that possesses (and has preserved) these pitted materials.

To be honest, you probably could slap "Here Comes the Sun" in the background of nearly any movie trailer and I'd get a little watery-eyed (note to the people who make movie trailers: please don't), but when Martin Scorsese spends four years on a documentary on the life of George Harrison, I'm already clearing out my calendar in early October to watch it.

You're not helping your cause here, Charlie Sheen, with the Dr. Strangelove reference. I'd probably watch the Comedy Central roast in his "honor" if I could be promised a full mental breakdown on stage in the midst of the parade of second rate comedians mocking him, but I suspect he'll just be hanging out making the same stupid face I was sick of back when everyone was saying "winning" for a week. Still, this will be more watchable than the new look Three and a Half Men that it's airing at the same time as, I suppose.

Café Desta, the Ethiopian eatery at 758 S. Stone Ave., will soon be roasting its own coffee.

Telahoun Molla tells us the roaster is already in place and that he hopes to be turning out fair-trade coffee imported from Ethiopia by December. The coffee will be available by the cup and by the bag.

“We’re working to get various coffees from Ethiopia, and trying to make sure it's fair-trade so the farmers are benefitting from this business, too,” Molla said this morning.

Molla said a room adjacent to the restaurant will hold the coffee business and a small café-style seating area.

This will be the second coffee-roasting business in that area. Café Aqui, a microroastery that sells bulk coffee and supplies several local restaurants, is located right down the street at 1317 S. Sixth Ave.
