Less is More

When you are planning your potted garden, keep in mind that often “less is more.” You want to make sure you follow my suggestion that I gave you last week with using the biggest pots that fit in the area you are placing them. We highly recommend that you do not plant anything in the sun smaller than an 18” inside diameter. This is so there is enough soil to insulate the roots and hold moisture to keep the plants healthy.

Your mind and eye will find that one or three pots is much more restful and enjoyable. Also, these larger pots, once placed will be easier to take care of.

We chose Tucson to live and enjoy the outside. I do not want you to become a slave to your pots!!

I really don't understand why they took the bear out of the produce section. Isn't an added bit of adorableness for your customers worth some loss of product? I don't understand you, Alaskans, and I never will.

As a follow-up to yesterday's news that Jonathan Rothschild is leading Rick Grinnell, more results from the same poll were released by the Pima County Democratic Party today. Guess what? It looks like the three Democrats up for re-election should all win handily and Tucsonans still generally like Democrats and dislike Republicans. Also, the sun is projected to set tonight.

In the race for City Council from Ward 1, Democrat Regina Romero has a wide 32-point lead over Green Party candidate Beryl Baker, 49% to 17%.

• In the race for City Council from Ward 2, Democrat Paul Cunningham leads Republican Jennifer Rawson by 29 points, 54% to 25%. That’s a wider margin than Cunningham had in our July survey when he led Rawson 44% to 26%.

• In the race for City Council from Ward 4, Democrat Shirley Scott leads Republican Tyler Vogt by 25 points, 53% to 28%. Scott’s support remains unchanged from July, when she led Vogt 53% to 23%.

• The Democratic Party (54% favorable/37% unfavorable) is more popular in the city of Tucson than the Republican Party (39% favorable/53% unfavorable).

METHODOLOGY

• This memorandum summarizes results from a telephone poll of 400 randomly selected likely voters in the city of Tucson, Arizona.

• Interviewing for the poll was conducted October 10-12, 2011.

• Special care was taken to ensure the geographic and demographic divisions of the actual electorate are properly represented.

• The estimation error associated with a sample of 400 is 4.9% at the 95% confidence interval. This means that in 95 of 100 cases, the results of this poll are within plus or minus 4.9 points of the results that would have been obtained if all likely voters had been interviewed.

Bill O'Reilly must be really conflicted. He likes to play the populist, sticking up for the regular guy, but he can't go on Fox News and stick up for Occupy Wall Street. Quite the conundrum for the guy. The entire pointless conversation is worth it for Cornel West and Tavis Smiley's amused outrage, however.

You might remember Robert Bork from his weird beard and failed attempt to become a Supreme Court justice, but he's back in 2011 as the co-chair of Mitt Romney's “Justice Advisory Committee," whatever that means.

Still as wacky and controversial as ever, if you enjoy curbs on non-political free speech and think women probably should stop complaining about discrimination already, you'll love Bork's influence on the Republican frontrunner:

How about the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment? Does he still think it shouldn’t apply to women?

“Yeah,” he answers. “I think I feel justified by the fact ever since then, the Equal Protection Clause kept expanding in ways that cannot be justified historically, grammatically, or any other way. Women are a majority of the population now—a majority in university classrooms and a majority in all kinds of contexts. It seems to me silly to say, ‘Gee, they’re discriminated against and we need to do something about it.’ They aren’t discriminated against anymore.”
