I don't know what that means, but I don't want to seem anti-Liberty. I just know that we're going to get it when we live it, whatever "it" happens to be in that particular phrase.

The easy reaction is to mock a seemingly-over-privileged former Disney star for jumping on the bandwagon, but it probably shouldn't surprise anyone that any somewhat clueless American 19 year old would have some affinity for an anti-establishment movement with a mission vague enough for anyone with somewhat leftist beliefs to glom on to. Her take on OWS is probably just as legit as the one coming from a rich guy who shills for a credit card company, at very least.

Also, if that wasn't quite enough Miley for you today, she's also apparently recording a cover of "You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” for a forthcoming benefit album of Bob Dylan covers. Something to look forward to in 2012, everybody!

If you're part of the rapidly shrinking Venn diagram intersection of "people who care about what Joe Arpaio thinks" and "people who still think Rick Perry will win the Republican nomination", here's some news for you:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a well-known immigration hardliner, will endorse GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry by the end of the week, NBC News reported this weekend.

Perry, who has been criticized by other Republicans for being too lenient on illegal immigration, will continue his campaign in New Hampshire this week. According to multiple media reports, Arpaio will be joining him on the trail.

Arpaio has sparked much controversy in supporting and enforcing Arizona’s tough immigration law that allows law enforcement officials to stop and detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.

The endorsement from Arpaio could aid Perry with conservative GOP primary voters concerned about his stance on immigration. The Texas governor has stressed his record on border security while campaigning, but has been bludgeoned by conservatives for passing a law in the Lone Star State that provides in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants.

Perry’s GOP rivals, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann, also sought Arpaio’s endorsement.

Personally, I think it's a little early to be throwing around endorsements before Project White House 2: Electoral Boogaloo kicks off this Thursday, but it's not like Joe Arpaio is exactly known for making wise decisions.

Alan Fischer of the Planetary Science Institute fills us in on the local connection to the Mars Science Laboratory and the Curiosity rover, which launched on Saturday:

With the Mars Science Laboratory speeding through space on its way to an expected August 2012 arrival at our neighboring planet, Planetary Science Institute researchers R. Aileen Yingst and David Vaniman are looking forward to seeing what the rover’s cameras and spectrometers will show.

During its planned lengthy surface mission, the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity will assess whether Mars ever was, or is still today, a habitable environment able to support microbial life.

Yingst, a Senior Scientist at PSI, is Deputy Principal Investigator on MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) and a Co-Investigator on MARDI (Mars Descent Imager) and MastCam (Mast Camera).

“Curiosity is the first rover designed to be both field geologist and portable laboratory,” Yingst said. “It has many of the characteristics of other rovers, but it also has instruments that will allow it to look for evidence of carbon compounds in samples. This is something that your typical field geologist could only do in the lab.”

It hasn't even aired yet, but based on this shaky YouTube video shot off a TV screen, TLC's Virgin Diaries looks like it will be a source of minutes of low quality humor at the expense of others.

It's been a really long time since Guns N' Roses have played anywhere in Arizona (a show scheduled for December of 2002 was cancelled, and I think the last time Axl Rose actually took a stage in our state was back in early 1992 when the band played two nights at Compton Terrace with Soundgarden as the opener), so even if the lineup is still sadly missing Slash, Duff and Izzy, it's still notable that the band has a show scheduled for Phoenix's Comerica Theatre next month. The new version of the group seems proficient enough (Tommy Stinson on bass!) and Axl seems to actually care again for the first time in years, so maybe it'll be worth checking out. Then again, there's a decent chance that you'll end up driving up there only to find out that Axl canceled the show because he didn't like the sweater someone in the audience is wearing. Anything is possible.

Guns N' Roses are scheduled to play Comerica Theatre in Downtown Phoenix on Tuesday, December 27, with tickets going on sale Monday, December 5, at 10 a.m.

Alison Davis, the former coordinator of the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance who recently relocated to Seattle, on Transgender Day of Remembrance and so much more:

Often my scope of activism is narrowly focused on gender and transgender related issues. I participated in my 10th Transgender Day of Remembrance last night. It was my first in Seattle, my new home. I felt moved to talk a bit at the event. It was another year of brutal murders of my trans sisters. (I did not see any trans men listed this year.) I think a lot about the anger, fear and hatred directed at my transgender community. I am amazed and not surprised by the amount of violence directed at those who challenge gender norms. We really scare people. We challenge reality and all of the social conventions most folks assume to be "normal". By our very existence we cause people to question themselves and their relationships. We are a very real threat. Boo!

On, perhaps, an even broader stage, I am watching people brutalized and murdered by the political and economic powers that be. I saw the 84-year-old woman pepper sprayed by police in Seattle last week and the students at UC Davis sprayed while sitting in protest. I watched the people in Egypt in Tahrir Square beginning a second round of demonstrations - facing death - in order to obtain some sort of a voice in their own future. I hear and read about Syrians and others defying armed military in order to get a taste of elusive autonomy and "human rights". I am in awe of their courage. I am delighted to see the light turning on in so many minds.

Short Stories by local author Nicholas Campanella has been published by The Moon Publishing and Printing (www.moonpublishprint.com).

Campanella grew up on the Jersey Shore, in Seaside Heights. He says he used to listen to the Beatles and Rolling Stones "blasting over the ocean and down the boardwalk in the 60s." He majored in creative writing at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. He's married and has lived in Tucson since 1995.

He writes, "Short Stories is a collection of stories written over the last ten years—most of which appeared in The Moon, a local literary zine which has relocated to Indiana. There is a variety of horror, humor, enchantment, fantasy and a couple of poems."

"The Boardwalk in Winter"
The boardwalk in winter stands quiet. Abandoned. Cold, cloudy with lonely waves traveling an incredible way to die on distant shores. The boardwalk in winter has no friends. Only memories of what was and what will be. I walk from one end to the other. Past every covered ride and boarded up food stand. Every silenced penny arcade and frozen fun house. Standing on the beach at the cold water's edge the wave perishes in a quarter inch of water finally foaming at my feet.
The boardwalk has only sunshine friends.

"The Not Ready for Prime Time Fisherman"
As an angler, fish really like me. They don't have to worry about getting hooked or injured. They'd get a good laugh at how a guy could spend twelve hours catching nothing. I imagine fish comparing my angling ability to my dating scene. I couldn't catch a fish in a grocery store. Whenever someone asked about the one that got away, shamefully, my answer was, "All of them."

"The Church"
The congregation spilled in Sunday mornings from the surrounding countryside. The elderly. The young and rambunctious. The middle aged, who were often too over dressed for the occasion and seemed more concerned about how they appeared to others than about the salvation they may receive from their little church. As if how they looked mattered at all.

Much to my disappointment, this is not a graphic novel involving the Wilson sisters playing rock and roll and fighting crime in Seattle. Instead, Eric and Arnie talk about hugging, Fight Club and some other stuff.
