Medical marijuana has a lot of enemies in Arizona — the close vote on the law's passage in 2010 and the ensuing legal battles are evidence enough of that — but a legislator from a suburban legislative district north of Phoenix might be emerging as a particularly wrongheaded foe.

State Rep. Amanda Reeve, who serves at the behest of the residents of heavily Republican LD 6 at the northern edge of Phoenix, recently introduced two bills that would restrict the use of MMJ.

House Bill 2349 was in the news quite a bit. It would forbid possession or use of medical marijuana on school campuses - including colleges. That bill passed the House Education Committee on Feb. 2.

The other bill got less attention, because it was wiped off the face of the Earth with a strike everything amendment, a tool by which legislators in Arizona change the contents of introduced bills, often to something entirely unrelated to the original bill. Reeve's HB 2350 would have made it illegal to charge medical marijuana patients a membership or service fee to be eligible for an MMJ transfer. It would have made health centers like Tumbleweeds in Tucson illegal. The strike everything amendment changed HB 2350 into a bill about public works project notifications. Bullet dodged, for now.

But I would urge Amanda to leave well enough alone. I know she has a lot of leadership awards and accolades and various types of recognition of excellence from her peers. Those are all listed on her website in a seeming bid for our respect. I'll respect that, Amanda, as soon as you respect your pledge on the same website to strive for "economic development and sustainability" and to "reduce burdensome government regulations." Stifling medical marijuana does neither. In fact, Reeves' proposals seem an awful lot like burdensome government regulation to me, and she is actively trying to stifle legitimate economic development that would be highly sustainable.

Fresh off his spat with the people behind the Grammys and a performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend (above), Justin Vernon will bring his group Bon Iver back to Tucson on April 23rd at AVA. Ticket information is still to come. Sort of a weird place for an indie act of his sort, but then again, Bon Iver is far more popular than when they played the Rialto in 2009.

I was recently reminded about how excited I am for the release of Wes Anderson's new film, Moonrise Kingdom, when I came across this neat little video compiling all of the 'above' shots in Anderson's films.

Of all the things going on in this city, one of my favorites is the Tucson Village Farm. Lots of places talk about trying to help our kids eat healthier, but the unbelievably dedicated people behind the outfit are actually doing it, and with very good results.

A good chance to check out what the place is up to is U-Pick Tuesdays, when you can buy the produce the place grows in an effort to teach kids where their food comes from. The event takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. You can read a little bit more about it over here.

Dear Senator Melvin:

How nice to receive your Concurrent Memorial. Evidently the heavy winter rains have been good for the poppy crop up in Saddlebrook.

Although you note both the full House and Senate as signatory, I see only your name attached so I will assume you're flying solo on this one.

The last letter I saw coming from you to this area was way back in December, 2010 when you told the Rio Nuevo Board to refrain from coming to terms with the City of Tucson so the Attorney General could "send down a probe" on the City. Shortly after your having sent that instruction, the Board voted in favor of working with the City. It is unfortunate that enough members who were serious about developing a working relationship either left, or were removed from the Board. The agreement to work together expired and has resulted in a $47 million Notice of Intent to sue the taxpayers of this region being filed.

Allow me to share some facts about which you were evidently not briefed prior to issuing your Memorial:

David Crowe Robles, a local defense contractor, is announcing plans this week to take on Congressman Raul Grijalva in the Aug. 28 Democratic primary.

Crowe Robles, who had been toying with a run for U.S. Senate in the Democratic ticket before Richard Carmona got into the race, isn't the only Democrat who wants a piece of Grijalva's hide. Former state lawmaker Amanda Aguirre is also assembling a campaign. Aguirre has Grijalva's old nemesis, Luis Gonzales, helping her make introductions around Tucson.

Grijalva could have trouble in a primary; he nearly lost the overwhelmingly Democratic district in last year's general election because many voters were turned off by his call for a boycott in the wake of SB1070. But his life is probably made a little easier with two opponents instead of just one.

1. I ponder whether or not my wife will enjoy the show. With a show like Walking Dead, there's no question she will want nothing to do with it. Something like Boardwalk Empire or Game of Thrones, however, is less clearcut, and in those situations, I'll try and get away with watching on my own until she sees me hunched over my computer screen and says, "Hey! I thought we were going to watch that together!"

2. We watch the show together.

3. At some point, she drops out. I can tell this is coming because she'll begin to waffle. If she hesitates even the slightest bit when I ask if she's up for another episode, she's fading.

4. I watch the rest of the series alone.
