We'd like to give a big thanks to the presidential candidates who came by our first Project White House Beer Summit yesterday, including Republicans Sarah Gonzales, Charles Skelley, Peter "Simon" Bollander, Al Perry, Donald Benjamin and Kip Dean and Green Michael Oatman. Despite their rivalries in seeking to win Arizona's Feb. 28 presidential primary, all of the candidates showed tremendous civility and respect toward one another and we hope to do another beer summit soon.

Another big thanks is due to our gracious host, Borderlands Brewing Co., and to the two food trucks that came by. MaFooCo served up some outstanding Korean tacos and Animal Farm's burger is as good as it gets, from the light and yummy bun to the fresh beef patty. We're eager to try more of their offerings.

We'll have a full report on the latest from Project White House in next week's print edition, but in the meantime, enjoy some photos from TW intern Zachary Vito below the cut.

Although calls to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Southern Arizona affiliate office were not returned, yesterday the group put up a notice on its Facebook page to explain its relationship with Planned Parenthood Southern Arizona and where funds go locally that are raised in Tucson:

We've had lots of calls and posts about the news that Planned Parenthood will no longer receive funding from Komen Affiliates.

Know that nothing changes here in Southern Arizona, where we have never funded Planned Parenthood Arizona, and nor have they applied for a grant from us. Relations with PPAZ are very good; they have assured us today that Komen SAZ's work and mission have our full support and that they encourage their own supporters to continue donating to Komen.

If you have any concerns, please let us know and we will forward them on to our national Komen office in Dallas. Meantime, know that we continue on our mission -with your much-needed help - to provide uninsured and under-insured women with free mammograms and treatment, and to guide them through our healthcare maze.

And know that 75 cents on every dollar donated stays here in the community, with the other 25 cents going towards research.

The series comes from an organization called Indocumentales. “These films come with some discussion the idea with the films is to bring issues about the border and immigration to a diverse audience and to promote discussion in a way that is informative and open and civil,” Michelle Kuhns, outreach coordinator for CLAS, said.

The series goes beyond the bigger picture of the dangers of crossing the border and examines some specific and complex situations that immigrants find themselves in. “We hear about how dangerous it is, we know that that happens,” Kuhns said. “These films all look at it in a different way, they’re very personal films.”

She said CLAS is trying to bring some university resources out to the community through these films, which are important for Tucsonans to see because migration is all around. The films do touch on some heavy topics, though all are welcome to attend. They’re shown in Room 1C at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center and educated discussion will be held after each viewing to think about the messages the films portray.

“It allows everyone to have a glimpse into some of the many challenges and also the strength that a lot of the immigrants in these stories bring with them,” Kuhns said.

The only thing we've been able to find out about this new restaurant Cinco de Mayo at 3535 E. Fort Lowell Road is that it will serve seafood and Mexican food, and that a liquor license is currently pending. The sign says it will open very soon but it was too dark when we stopped by to get a good look at the interior.

The building used to be home to a Las Cazuelitas location - it closed last June - and I'm pretty sure it was a place called La Buena Cocina before that. We're still trying to get in touch with the owners and will be back when we learn more.

Backstage at the David Letterman show last night, Bill Murray met up with Korean pop group Girls Generation.

I was having a pretty crappy week until late Tuesday afternoon when, during a routine view of my Twitter feed, I got a bit of news that I've been anxiously awaiting for months: the unveiling of the 2012 World Series of Poker schedule.

This day is like Christmas, Easter, Arbor Day and March Madness all wrapped into one for me, and for thousands of other poker players throughout the world. From May 27 through July 16 nearly everyone who wants to try to hit the big time in poker will be at the Rio in Las Vegas participating in this extravaganza, which once again has gotten bigger.

Some of the major upgrades:

* More tables. As many as 470 tables will be in use for tournaments, satellites and cash games.
* More events. A total of 61 tournies will award WSOP gold bracelets, three more than last year. These events range in cost to enter from $1,000 to ... one MILLION dollars. Yes, that's correct, there's a $1M tourney on July 1.

Even if you can't pony up the scratch to play in one of these (somehow I find a way), there's plenty of side events, cash games, and just the overall atmosphere of being in a building that's completely dedicated to poker for eight weeks.

Now, time for me to pore over the schedule and figure out which events to win ...

The weather these past couple of weeks in Tucson has been sunny and around 75 degrees almost everyday. I often find myself in a frantic panic when I realize that in a couple of months, the weather will return to the mid-90-degree dry-heat that I've grown about as accustomed to as any Tucson native can.

So, to calm myself down from these weather related mini-freak-outs, I ask myself: How can I take full advantage of the weather conditions that hundreds of snowbirds come here to enjoy? About a week ago I took a day trip to one of Tucson's gems: The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I am always blown away by the many facets the I seem to forget the museum has to offer and it is always such a treat to get out to the west side of Tucson. So, while the weather is not only bearable but more importantly beautiful in Tucson, I suggest you head out to the good ol' Desert Museum. And while I evade my next weather-related freak-out by finding some other weather-specific Tucson oddity to enjoy, here are some pictures to enjoy from my visit.

Enjoy a night of Fabian Thursday night at Club Congress. His beats without-a-doubt fall into today's popular music style categories, but I do hear a hint of '70s disco in there - and a bit of Michael Jackson pop. His website provides a glimpse of his very interesting resume:

DJ Fabian has shared and played along many of today's chart topping artists and has personally worked and created ideas for entertainers from all over the spectrum. From Carrot Top, to Barry Manilow to recently designing the soundtrack to the “Official Michael Jackson European Tribute Tour” for Emmy winner, Travis Payne (This Is It, Dancing With The Stars) choreographer, artistic director for and friend of the late Michael Jackson.

Republican Dave Sitton has announced that he's holding a press conference tomorrow to let us know whether he'll be getting into the Congressional District 8 race to finish out Gabrielle Giffords' term and/or the race for the new Congressional District 2 later this year.

Sitton, who is well known for marketing efforts around town (Golden Eagle, the UA Cancer Center, the billboard industry) as well as his sports broadcasting experience, has been exploring a run for several months.

If he gets into the race, Sitton can count on support from Republicans, particularly in the business community, who aren't excited about the other GOP candidates, Jesse Kelly (who is expected to announce his plans to run on Friday) and state Sen. Frank Antenori.

All three candidates will have to file nominating petitions by Feb. 27 for the April 17 GOP primary, which will be followed by a June 12 special general election.

Antenori, who announced his plans to run last week, will likely be courting the same Tea Party base as Kelly, who captured the support of that portion of the party to win a GOP primary over Jonathan Paton with 48 percent of the vote in 2010 (only to go on to narrowly lose to Giffords later that year). Will those two end up splitting the conservative base and and give Sitton a path to victory?
