Pima County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Deputy Dawn Barkman confirmed today that State Rep. Daniel Patterson was served at 3 p.m. outside of his home near Santa Rita Park.

Barkman said Patterson was served by officer with orders from ex-wife Jeneiene Schaffer, as well as ex-girlfriend and ex-campaign manager Georgettte Escobar.

Patterson had been avoiding service of Escobar's restraining order that allows her to enter the home without Patterson on the premesis in order to collect her belongings, as well as her dog, Jake. Escobar had told the Tucson Weekly that most of the furnishings in the house belong to her and that the dog is registered in her name.

Sources close to friends of the family confirmed that Schaffer served Patterson with a protection order for "reckless endangerment and fear of abduction," as an effort to protect Schaffer and the daughter she shares with Patterson.

When asked why the Sheriff's Department served Patterson, and not, for example, the Tucson Police Department, Barkman said that any law enforcement agency could serve Patterson. "We just happened to find him and serve him."

Rumors surfaced earlier today that Patterson could face a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence related to an event that happened on Friday, Feb. 24. Tucson City Prosecutor Baird Greene told the Weekly that charges have not been filed. He said the city is still waiting for TPD to complete its investigation.

This year's edition of the Desert Diamond Cup wraps-up tomorrow night with the third place match between the New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake at 6 p.m. and the final between the LA Galaxy and the New England Revolution at 8 pm. Some tickets were still available at the time of posting and the organizers have released $20 lawn seats for sale as well.

On Wednesday night, the Red Bulls defeated the Galaxy 2-1 as two of this era's most famous players, Thierry Henry and David Beckham both took the field.

Big congratulations to Arizona’s Sarah Gonzales, the big winner of Project White House and sixth-place finisher in Tuesday’s presidential primary.

Gonzales, who earned the Tucson Weekly’s endorsement in the Republican primary, had 1,464 votes as of yesterday. Gonzales clobbered former Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer, who got only 657 votes. She trails Texas Gov. Rick Perry by just 418 votes.

Gonzales, who describes her unexpectedly strong showing as “crazy,” suggests that, as the only woman on the GOP ballot, she was an attractive candidate to Republicans who are unhappy with the way the four GOP front-runners are talking about women’s rights.

“I think Republican women and some Republican in general are tried of extremist views, but there’s no other options for them,” Gonzales says. “So me just existing—I don’t think they knew my opinions or my views—gave them an option. With women’s bodies right now, it’s so crazy. It’s a battleground. There’s a war being waged on women.”

Despite coming in sixth on the Arizona ballot, Gonzales says she’ll likely suspend her campaign for the presidency rather than take it to the convention later this year.

“Somebody asked me if I was going to be Mitt Romney’s running mate, but I thought it was a ploy to get me to self-deport, so I said no,” says Gonzales, who still intends to remain a Republican for the time being and see how it works out.

Gonzales easily outpaced the top vote-getter in the 2008 Project White House competition, Sandy Whitehouse, who got 554 votes.

The other Perry on the ballot didn’t fare quite as well. Al “Dick” Perry—who enjoyed a hot streak out the gate with mentions on Rachel Maddow, Talking Points Memo, and Texas Monthly—ended up with 288 votes, including family members throughout the state.

Perry said he believed his placement in the No. 4 slot on the ballot cost him votes because many of his supporters were looking for his name at the bottom and the ballot and inadvertently voted for Rick Perry.

"i think Rick Perry stole a lot of votes away from me," Perry said.

He said that he would be wrapping up his presidential campaign.

"I'm not cut out for for politics," Perry said. "The people have spoken."

I spoke to Daily Show contributor (and person you might recognize from standing next to Justin Long on television) John Hodgman on Tuesday, and I started the conversation seeking his expertise as a deranged millionaire on why fellow rich person Mitt Romney seems to be having trouble grabbing the Republican nomination, before moving on to end of humanity, soccer, and the perils of zeppelin ownership.

John Hodgman will perform at the Rialto Theatre with John Roderick (of the excellent band The Long Winters) and live muralist Joe Pagac on Saturday night.

JH: Why are all these citizens intent on keeping this simple deranged billionaire from winning this nomination? As a deranged millionaire, I’m offended.

DG: Are you sympathetic to his plight?

JH: Yes! Of course I am. He has the money to buy this thing. It has been said to you people time and time again, but yet he keeps getting thwarted. Why? Because of your preference? Since when have national elections been about your preference?

DG: Not recently, at least.

JH: I think it says something something very sad about America, when a billionaire has the financial and structural advantage and the friends who own NASCAR teams can’t even get a lousy presidential nomination. What does that say about our country?

DG: That we don’t regard wealth the way we should, I suppose.

JH: It’s just another symptom that something has gone horribly wrong.

The Southern Arizona Mustang Club, which claims to be the “oldest Mustang Club in the world”, will host their “Fords on Fourth” show this Sunday. Fords of all kinds will be displayed on three closed-off blocks of Fourth Avenue between Sixth Street and University Boulevard. No closure date is yet set, but the plan to shutter the Cherrybell Postal Processing and Distribution Center is well underway. Our mail processing will move just up the road a bit to a Phoenix facility. We can wave goodbye to next-day first class delivery, for sure. We can also probably end up driving or even walking a piece of mail across town quicker than the mail service would be able to do it.

And we can kiss the Tucson postmark au revoir and have all our mail instead stamped with Phoenix. This may be the saddest development of all, since those not familiar with Arizona often have trouble spelling Tucson. The postmark at least ensured the spelling was reinforced every time we sent someone a cheery postcard or other piece of mail.

But it shall be no more.
