Two junior varsity baseball players at Willcox High School were “lucky to be alive” and a man is in custody after he allegedly shot at their vehicle with a high-powered rifle at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday. A freshman was transported to Northern Cochise Community Hospital by ambulance for treatment of minor lacerations from flying glass, said Willcox Police Chief Jake Weaver. The second juvenile riding in the vehicle was unhurt, he said, adding no additional students or staff were injured. The two students were backing out onto Bus Barn Road to get a bucket of balls near the high school baseball field, where junior varsity players were preparing for practice and the high school varsity was preparing for a game with Elfrida’s Valley Union High School.

The gunman, identified as 40-year-old Arthur J. Tineo, was standing outside of the school campus on Airport Road in a vacant lot and shot at the vehicle, putting a single hole in the back windshield, then several shattered marks in a side window.

I thought the GOP's determination to make a campaign issue about contraception was pretty weird in itself, but it took a truly reprehensible turn when Rush Limbaugh suggested that a college student was a "slut" because she testified before Congress about the importance of covering contraception, especially for women who might need it for reasons that had nothing to do with birth control.

The woman, Sandra Fluke, issued a statement in response to Rush's declaration that she was a slut:

I thank the thousands of women and men, including members of Congress, Georgetown University students and faculty, and total strangers of all political stripes across the country who have offered kind words and support following recent egregious personal attacks.

We are fortunate to live in a democracy where everyone is entitled to their own opinions regarding legitimate policy differences. Unfortunately, numerous commentators have gone far beyond the acceptable bounds of civil discourse.

No woman deserves to be disrespected in this manner. This language is an attack on all women, and has been used throughout history to silence our voices.

The millions of American women who have and will continue to speak out in support of women's health care and access to contraception prove that we will not be silenced.

Rush responded with his demand that women tape themselves having sex and post the videos online so others could watch them.

A new tea store named Tea and More has opened inside the Many Hands Courtyard at 3054 N. First Ave.

Owner Petra Williams says she imports the tea from Germany and that she currently has nearly 70 varieties on hand, most of which are herbal. She does not sell tea by the cup, but says there's always a steaming kettle of sample tea for customers to partake of.

Williams says she scours the European continent for tea and tea-related items on annual trips back to her birthplace of Germany. Most of the items she sells are fair-trade.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. There's more on the store over here.

Considering the videos shown by Sheriff Joe Arpaio today as part of his grand expose regarding Pres. Obama's are hosted by the YouTube channel "TeaPartyPowerHour", it's possible that the commission he organized to look into the matter might not be entirely objective, but yet, Arpaio was out there claiming that he has "probable cause" to believe that the President's birth certificate is a fraud.

I didn't get through all the "evidence", mostly because I think I have better things to do with my time, but it's worth noting that one of the supposedly damning bits of evidence (that the PDF released by the White House has layers when opened in Adobe Illustrator) was discredited by the National Review almost a year ago. Of course, it took me at least fifteen seconds of Googling to find that bit of information, so maybe that was too much trouble.

Way to go, Joe. Maybe you should consider launching an investigation into actual problems facing your county instead, like the numerous sex crimes your department essentially ignored.

I'm not entirely sure why more late night talk shows don't book interesting events like Jimmy Fallon has with his Bruce Springsteen event this week. Springsteen performed songs from his forthcoming album on Monday and will return on Friday, and mid-week, musicians cover Springsteen songs. Tuesday, Kenny Chesney did a nice job with "I'm On Fire" and last night John Legend and the Roots delivered a jazzy take on "Dancing in the Dark".

Once upon a time, there were only so many places you could live music performances, so when a group appeared on TV, it was sort of an event. I remember begging my parents to let me stay up to watch R.E.M. on Letterman's NBC show, but now I can jump on YouTube or elsewhere and see nearly any band anytime I want. I'd be far more likely to tune into a talk show (something I rarely do in the DVR era) if something unique and unexpected was likely to occur in the musical guest slot of the program. What John Legend and the Roots came up with certainly counts.

Food educator and long-time pastry chef Rene Luedeman was pushing a shopping cart through a local grocery store when the first dizzy spell hit. More were to follow and she was eventually diagnosed with a balance disorder that resulted from inner-ear damage.

As a scientist for 20 years and a teacher for Pima Community College's culinary-arts program, she was used to spending most of her time on her feet, but that was now out of the question. But she could make cakes, and stunningly beautiful ones at that.

So she and her husband Terril Yuhas put their heads together and came up with the custom-cake shop Dizzy Dame's Bake Shoppe, which operates out of their home and only takes custom orders for the time being.

Luedeman - who also founded the local nonprofit Cakes for Causes - currently makes cookies, fruit pies, cakes and caramel apples, but the sky is the limit. There are some stipulations on what she can sell because the business is based in her home, but decades teaching food safety and cake decorating seem to be coming in rather handy as the orders keep coming in.

Country legend Merle Haggard performed to a sold-out crowd at the Fox Tucson Theatre on Tuesday night.

Sen. John McCain isn't happy about the drawn-out Republican nomination process.

McCain visited the Tonight Show last night to complain that the GOP candidates were tearing each other to pieces. He said a lot of the blame lies on the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision striking down campaign-finance limits and that the justices "should be ashamed and embarrassed by what they did."

On primary night, McCain told the Boston Herald:

“This is like watching a Greek tragedy,” McCain told the Herald. “It’s the negative campaigning and the increasingly personal attacks ... it should have stopped long ago. Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now it’s just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks.”

The Arizona Republican, who endorsed Romney earlier this year and is set to rally with him in Phoenix tonight, said he believes the former Bay State governor will get the nomination, yet he worries a long, drawn out primary campaign could leave Romney too wounded to triumph in November.

“I know he’s going to be the nominee but I also worry about how much damage has been done,” McCain said. “I think we still can win. ... Once we get this over, the more we’ll be focused on Obama’s failures.”
