I'm aware that the @guarascioport Twitter feed is a parody, mocking David Guarascio and Moses Port, the two guys who have the difficult task of taking over Dan Harmon's Community, a show that seems almost impossibly tied to Harmon's vision and sense of humor, but even the faux inepitude of the imaginary versions of the real-life showrunners still hurts my soul a bit.

The University of Arizona is looking to make the head coaching position for its club hockey team a permanent position, not just something that apparently anybody can do. The gig was posted today on the UA job board and requires, among other things, applicants to have a degree in recreation, sports management, administration, physical education or a related field and have at least four of head coaching experience at the college level or better.

Karen White, a UA Campus Recreation employee who is listed as the departmental contact on the job listing, said the school is looking to solidify the position by making it a 10-month appointment that pays $35,000. Current head coach Sean Hogan, who piloted the Wildcats this past season during their first year as an official UA sport, is allowed to reapply for the opening, White said.

I wonder if Leo Golembiewski, who founded the team — known then as the Icecats — and coached it for 32 years before being ousted by his players a year ago when they wanted to get under the umbrella of Campus Rec, will apply for the position ...

Not that this is particularly newsworthy on its own, but it's nice to see Gabrielle Giffords out and about and smiling.

Democrat Ron Barber, who is facing Republican Jesse Kelly in the June 12 special election to complete Gabby Giffords' congressional term, has a new TV ad that reminds voters that he's been endorsed by the Tucson Weekly, Arizona Republic and Arizona Daily Star.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Democratic Party sends out a mailer highlighting Giffords' support for Barber:

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros has always seemed like a summertime kind of band to me, so I think that the release of their sophomore album, entitled Here, came at the perfect moment in the year.

The Los Angeles-based band’s sound on Here is similar to their first album, but also has more spiritual undertones and an almost hokey quality at times. The third track on the album, “I Don’t Wanna Pray,” sounds a lot like a 1960s gospel song. Which totally usually isn’t my style, but somehow the 11-member ensemble pulls it off in a pretty charming way.

The album takes an eerie turn at times, but always bounces back sounding bright and cheery. No song is entirely dark and brooding; the band’s upbeat tendencies always shine through before a song ends.

It's been awhile since The Shins (which are essentially James Mercer and some other people these days) have visited Tucson...I feel like they were here in 2007, but the last show I can find was at the Rialto in 2004. Feel free to heckle me in the comments if you know of one more recently.

Anyhow, the Portland-based indie rock act is coming to the Rialto Theatre on October 3rd, and while that seems like a lot of advance notice, I would imagine the show will eventually sell-out, so consider yourself warned. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am.

BONUS: Read Eric Swedlund's review of the newest Shins album, Port of Morrow, from our March 29th issue.

This really does seem like how nearly every zombie movie starts, but thankfully, whatever's going on at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana is now under control. Apocalypse avoided. THIS TIME.

The Arizona Republic follows up on a story first broken by Tucson Weekly in 2010: How Don Kelly Construction, the family-owned pipeline company where Tea Party congressional candidate Jesse Kelly works, has received tens of millions of dollars in stimulus funds:

Jesse Kelly, the Republican candidate running to replace Gabrielle Giffords in Congress, argues that President Barack Obama's economic-stimulus program failed to boost the economy through infrastructure projects and that government spending is driving the country to bankruptcy.

But the family construction company where Kelly has worked for about eight years, Don Kelly Construction Inc., has benefited from at least three contracts financed by millions in stimulus dollars and has relied almost exclusively on government-funded pipeline projects for its business.

The Arizona Republic has found that since 2010, additional stimulus and government-funded projects, totaling at least $60.8 million, have gone to the company.

"When Kelly talks about cutting (government) spending, but his own family's company is profiting from that very spending, you have to scratch your head and wonder whether he really believes what he says," said Rodd McLeod, a spokesman for Barber. "If he's really against it, why is he in that business?"

What Kelly told the Weekly in 2010:

Kelly himself estimates that close to 90 percent of the firm's work comes from government contracts worth tens of millions of dollars. And around the country, the firm—which is owned by Kelly's father, Don Kelly—frequently bids on public-works projects funded by both stimulus dollars and federal earmarks.

"The stimulus is not about Don Kelly Construction, and it shouldn't be," Kelly says. "It's about the country as a whole. Even if the company itself—which is not my company—benefitted from these projects, that doesn't make it right at all."

He says he doesn't know if the company is seeking other work funded by stimulus dollars or earmarks.

"I don't have a clue," Kelly says. "I'm sure we're going after every single project that's out there, so there may be more."

I personally generally believe most social-action-based boycotts or bans or whatever seem to end up fizzling out without much real effect on society (OH HEY THERE), especially since they rarely hurt the people making the decision you're opposed with anyway, but on the other hand, the owner of West Hollywood gay bar The Abbey does have a point:

“We love our straight girlfriends coming in to celebrate one of the happiest days of their life," says Abbey owner David Cooley. "But it’s also a slap in the face to my customers and my life that we can’t have that same celebration.”

[...]

Each weekend, The Abbey hosts several dozen ladies night parties. But Cooley says, no more. He says, until marriage is legal for everyone, straight women can no longer celebrate their pending nuptials at his club.

While I'm generally a fan of heckling and not really the most passionate supporter of John McCain, I think choosing to yell seemingly random nonsense at the senator while he was speaking at a Memorial Day event was probably a bad idea.
