And then there were two ...
It appears both poker players with ties to the Tucson area have made it into the money at the Main Event of the World Series of Poker, a $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament at the Rio in Las Vegas. Almost 6,600 people started this event last weekend, but only 720 entered Friday still in contention for the $8.5 million first prize.
Of those 720, 666 were to get paid. Yup, 666 on Friday the 13th. Cue the freaky string music.
As of 1:55 p.m. the money bubble had burst, with what appears to be both Benson resident Timothy Kilpatrick and University of Arizona graduate student Ray Chiu among those guaranteed to earn at least $19,000 for their troubles.
Chiu confirmed his cashing via twitter (handle: @scientificray): "We are in the $$$$$$$$$$!"
Prior to today, the last Tucsonan to cash in the Main Event was Garrett Adelstein in 2010. Adelstein was among the chip leaders with 500 people left but finished 222nd for a $48,000+ result. The top local Main Event casher in recent memory was Vail's Deb Blair, who in 2007 got 176th for $51,000.

It's a little difficult to explain a Girl Talk concert and actually capture what the experience is like, but in essence a guy, probably shirtless, presses buttons on a Macbook and people dance. Yes, this probably seems like a strange thing to spend $30 on, but it's more of an experience than anything. The music is every song you've ever enjoyed, chopped up into ten second segments, played on top of each other, and everyone is dancing. Sort of one of those things you should probably experience once, and on October 10th at the Rialto, Girl Talk will be back to give you a chance to sweat off a few pounds.
It's been awhile since his last copyright violating mix, but if you want a taste of Girl Talk, the music, here you go:

It's been a six year process, but the auto-themed restaurant, Hotrods Old Vail, is open at last.
After being at Hotrods Old Vail for five minutes, I understand why so many people are here. This restaurant is heaven for car enthusiasts, but could easily be a good time for anyone who has the slightest bit of a lead foot. I'm no automobile aficionado and I was pretty entranced by the checkered floors, the sleek garage that's connected to the restaurant, the dozens of framed car pictures along the walls, and of course, the real custom cars neatly lining the building.
This place is unique in that "it's a destination concept," said general manager Matt Hallinan at the opening event. You can eat and then immediately leave, but hanging around a while is what this place was designed for.
Yes, there is food. And a bar...but you don't get to watch custom cars come alive when you dine at McDonald's. While munching away on a burger at this restaurant, a glass wall can be all that separates you from restless hot rods and muscle cars.

Ignoring for a moment that he used an emoticon in an article for an actual newspaper or that the basic premise of his piece is strange — organizations attempt to minimize bad press about themselves, as if this is surprising somehow? — Josh Brodesky used his column today to a weird end, announcing the names of the women (allegedly/apparently) victimized by Paul Cunningham's boorish behavior:
Convenient timing. The report never outlined what Cunningham said to the three city employees. It didn't even name the three women on the receiving end of Cunningham's comments: [the names, go over the Star if you feel the need to know them].
The names were already out there, considering that most people could piece together who was probably in the bar based on the list of those who went on the trip and since the Star already mentioned the three in a previous article co-written by Brodesky, but what's gained from pointing that out again? Those three happened to be in a bar with a guy who can't handle his booze on a company trip on night, but apparently, the report, which seemed effective in calling Cunningham out for what he did while establishing that there might be a pattern of poor liquor-induced activity, needed to mention three city employees by name to really sell the point.
I haven't really been sexually harassed in the past, but I would assume the experience is humiliating enough without having the daily newspaper in town dragging your name back into the fiasco unnecessarily, but perhaps Josh Brodesky has his reasons.

It's been eight years since Jimmy Cliff released a new album, but over the last few months, the reggae legend played the main stage of Coachella and jammed with Bruce Springsteen at SXSW, so it's nice to have him back. His new album, sort of predictably titled Rebirth, is one of those records we've seen a lot lately with a musical icon teaming up with a younger admirer, but quite a few of those albums have really worked (Jack White with Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson, in particular) and this one, put together by Rancid's Tim Armstrong, is a fun listen letting reggae's greatest living vocalist do his thing. Check it out for yourself...it's currently streaming at RollingStone.com.
Jimmy Cliff is coming to the Rialto on August 23rd for one of those shows you'll probably kick yourself for missing. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

People, people. I'm not entirely sure what "brown sauce" is, but if your girlfriend is reading Fifty Shades of Grey, I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be squirting it at her.
"He said he had every intention of squirting sauce over Miss McCormick, but he now regrets having done this, realising how stupid it sounds."He didn't realise that the sauce incident would be classed as an assault. He is sorry for his actions."
"He lost his temper and went round to her home armed with a bottle of brown sauce, which he should never have done.
"Emma says it stung her eyes and it was all over the walls, which she had to clean up afterwards. I've spoken to Raymond and he's extremely sorry about it.
"He was angry that she suggested he slapped her because he hadn't. But they are now friends and they have been in touch with each other."

From last night's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, here's either Pee-wee Herman or a remarkably adept impersonator re-dubbing the Dark Knight Rises trailer. A warning: this is the most amazing thing you'd see all day, so hold on to your hat, assuming you wore a hat to work today.
Update: It was Fallon doing a remarkable impression. Wow.

The world's largest poker tournament is entering its sixth day of competition in Las Vegas, and believe it or not, but there are still four people from around these parts still alive.
The $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker Main Event began with 6,598 entrants, the fifth-most ever, and only 1,765 of them remain in contention for the $8.5 million first prize. That list of survivors includes a University of Arizona grad student who qualified through a $100 satellite tournament, a dude from Benson, a former UA student/online poker prodigy, and a former realtor who has already won a WSOP event in the past year.
Ray Chiu, who is studying economics at the UA, is in the Main Event after winning a satellite tournament at Casino del Sol on June 30. He got into that one by making the final table of a $100 tourney earlier in June, and now has a chance at big-time money. He currently stands 568th in chips, the only local whose ranking puts them within the 666 players that would get paid if the tournament ended now. Cashers will win at least $19,227.
Timothy Kilpatrick, from Benson, is ranked 761st, while Lee Gaines sits in 1,279th place and Sean Getzwiller is in 1,416th. Getzwiller won a $1,000 no-limit hold'em tournament at last year's WSOP, earning $611K and a sweet gold bracelet for his troubles.
All told, nine people with local connections entered the Main Event, with six making it out of their Day 1 flights.
Action resumes at 12 p.m. Thursday and will continue on through Monday, when after the field is reduced to nine players (each of whom wins at least $754K) the tourney will be paused until late October. This will allow ESPN's coverage of the Main Event to catch up to that point, and the final table will be shown live (er, with a 15-minute delay) until a winner is crowned.
