The Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show (which has earned the prized endorsement of The Range previously) has a great interview with Steve Heinrich, the head writer and some other stuff at Jellyvision, the company behind You Don't Know Jack. I recognize, again, that it's possible I'm the only person who cares about an extensive discussion of the "Question Four" musical segue used on YDJK: The Ride, but so be it.

After a spectacular run in the second half of the 90's as a series of PC games (seriously, I loved these games so much and not just because I was super-good at them), the brand faded a bit when consoles took over and after a TV version didn't pan out, but now there's a five question version on Facebook that's quite a bit of fun, which is weird to say about any game hosted on Facebook. It's worth a few semi-wasted moments each day online.

On a holiday road trip to California, I took some snapshots of some of the gas stations along the way to see the differences in gas from here in Tucson, which was $3.28 at the Shell gas station on Valencia Road and 12th Avenue, to Whittier.

And here is a trip to Southern California in gas prices:

A new restaurant called Tapas Fusion is setting up on the north end of the Albertson's shopping center at 2970 N. Campbell Ave., where Elle Wine Bistro used to be. We hear it will serve tapas and food from around the world with an emphasis on infusing those dishes with South American flavors. That sounds awesome.

From an e-mail received this morning:

Tapas Fusion is owned by Chef Violeta Rodriguez and General Manager, Mary Bellin. The two friends began planning this restaurant over a year ago and seriously looked at 9 places before deciding on the location at 2970 N Campbell Ave. We signed the lease in May 2012 and have been cleaning and ordering supplies ever since. Luckily, the restaurant was fully equipped and we have only had to add the rotisserie for our featured menu item, Peruvian Chicken or Pollo al Spiedo. It has a crispy skin and infusion of flavors that make the meat juicy. The menu will be completed and available on our new website Tapasfusiontucson.com. The website is under construction for the next day or two.

The original signs for Elle Wine Bistro are still on the road and building. The signs will be removed and replaced with our logo ASAP. Just a note, we are not taking over Elle nor have anything to do with the former restaurant. We have leased the space and equipment from the property management company.

I'm still bitter that I spent several hours of my life watching Tim Burton's Mars Attacks, so I'm a tough sell on this comic of the same name, but hey, maybe Eric and Arnie of Heroes and Villains can convince otherwise.

The hip little coffee bar and restaurant Sparkroot at 245 E. Congress St. is doing its part to combat the summer heat with its new line of homemade ice-pops. Sparkroot employee Julie Asis dropped us an e-mail last week with a description of the unique frozen treats:

I put them on the menu because they fit well with our gourmet take on childhood favorites - grilled cheese sandwiches and pb&js. Also, what's better than a tasty, refreshing popsicle in the middle of summer in tucson? Our kitchen team has fun taking turns inventing flavors. We like our treats unique and not too sweet, flavors that you can't get anywhere else in town like blackberry beet, strawberry basil lemonade, and banana chocolate peanut butter.

Noble Hops Gastropub is such an ambitious and interesting restaurant. It currently serves more than 175 different beers - 28 of those are available on tap - and executive chef Angel Fabian's newly revamped menu boasts a sweeping array of items ranging from shrimp satay to gourmet hamburgers.

You go long enough without finding a job in this economy, sometimes that means you've gotta mix things up a bit to get noticed.

But bringing Nicolas Cage into the mix?

Well, that's what a Canadian woman named Vanessa Hojda recently did when she inquired about an administrative assistant opening in New York. While her message said she was attaching her cover letter and resume, what she actually sent over was this.

If she gets the job, I am going to seriously consider attaching pics of Nick Nolte's mug shot or maybe Michelle Bachmann, depending on the position.

In advance of the upcoming release of Algiers, Calexico performed with the Austrian Symphony Orchestra in Vienna a few weeks back. We could tell you how great it the show is, but you really gotta see it for yourself. Check out the livestream on FM4 while you can—it's only up for few more days.

And don't forget: After Calexico wraps its fall U.S. and European tour (including a show at the Rialto Theatre on Friday, Oct. 26, and two nights at Phoenix's finest club, the Crescent Ballroom, on Oct. 27 and 28), the band will be performing with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 19, 2013.

The Tucson Unified School District meets tonight for a regular meeting. Folks behind the Freedom Summer project are organizing another action in support of Mexican-American studies in front of the school administration building starting at 5:30 p.m. and continuing during the meeting.

At last week's special meeting on Monday, July 2, the group kicked off a month-long series of actions that will take place in front of 1010, as well as weekend canvassing targeting specific neighborhoods in Tucson and teach-ins at the John Valenzuela Youth Center in South Tucson. Go to the group's calender to see what events are taking place.

But what will happen tonight? Last week, most of the action that took place was centered on TUSD board member Michael Hicks, who came outside during a board meeting break and taunted students and Mexican-American studies supporters. The taunts were returned with shout-outs for Rosa Clark and more. By Wednesday morning, Hicks claimed he was assaulted, but wouldn't be pressing charges.

This reporter and others outside and in the room when Hicks returned didn't see an assault take place, and Tucson Police Department officers who stood next to Hicks while he was outside never intervened on his behalf — expected if an assault occurred.

Hicks responded last week that we had it all wrong and that he was assaulted, although he never replied back when we asked for more details on what kind of assault took place and why he chose not to press charges. But we did hear back from Sgt. Maria Hawke, TPD public information officer.

The consistent TPD presence at the school board meetings hasn't been well received, especially after the school board meeting on May 3, 2011 in which community members were greeted by police in riot gear and some arrested. At the special meeting on Monday, July 2, there was a smaller police presence, but we asked Hawke if there's an existing policy to protect board members who leave the building to taunt students, since that's what it looked like that evening.

Hawke clarified today that there is no policy but officers check in to see if additional officers are needed at school board meeting — depending on what's on the agenda or how many people are there. But the police there that night, who stood by Hicks during his break, did not escort him out or stand there specifically to protect Hicks, Hawke said. Although when you look at this particular photo of what happened that night, it's hard to understand that wasn't the case.

"The main purpose is to ensure people's safety," Hawke said, it wasn't to escort Hicks.

Activists close to the police barricades in front of the building entrance said they heard police complaining about Hicks when the board member returned inside. Hawke said police can't keep Hicks from going outside and taunting students, and they can't prevent students from taunting him — that would be in violation of free speech.
