In the past 17 years, Disney and Pixar have released films that go straight to the heart, beginning with Toy Story and concluding with the most recent, Brave.

I'm excited about the long-awaited—12 years, to be exact—release of the Monsters, Inc. prequel coming out next year and I'm even more thrilled that Finding Nemo might get a sequel.

But why we have to wait at least 10 years for these movies to get a sequel when it only took five years for a follow-up to Cars?

Planned Parenthood Arizona filed an injunction in federal court Tuesday to block a new state law that would stop any federal dollars that pass through the state from going to Planned Parenthood, even for health-care services such as cancer screenings, STD treatment or other women's health services.

During a phone press conference yesterday, Bryan Howard, Planned Parenthood Arizona president and CEO, was joined by Roger Evans, senior director of public policy, litigation and law at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Howard said that HB 2800 will, if it takes effect, disqualify Planned Parenthood from being an AHCCCS provider because the organization provides safe and legal abortions.

"This litigation is about more than the nearly 3,000 currently receiving care at our health centers," Howard said during the press conference. "It is wrong for the state to tell any Arizonan who they can and can not go to for health care. We are confident the federal court will agree and grant and injunction. Unfortunately our governor and state lawmakers continue to put ideology first."

Fans of bulk liquor at rock bottom prices, clear your schedule for Aug. 1 and make sure there's enough gas in the pickup to get to Oro Valley.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department's Civil Enforcement Division is holding an auction at a storage facility at 8710 N. Oracle Road where it will be selling off, among other things, a bunch of "assorted liquor, wine and spirits" that were confiscated from a now defunct liquor store near Oracle and Orange Grove. Bidding starts at 10 a.m.

The auction announcement says that six "lots" of booze will be up for auction, along with some furniture, computer equipment and shelving. The items are what's left of the Beverage Corner, which has been sued in Pima County Superior Court by its creditors, thus prompting the need to auction off the items.

The Sheriff's Office often conducts such auctions of seized or confiscated material, sometimes including vehicles, homes or vacant land, though most times it's the result of a court order from a civil action and now from a criminal case, said Jerry Sanchez, office supervisor for the Civil Enforcement Unit.

So, if you were hoping this lot was going to include a lot of Cristal or other stereotypical drug- or gang-related adult beverages, sorry. Though there's a good chance it'll include some Boone's Farm.

There's little argument that Arizona Republicans got a lot of short-term political gain out of SB 1070 and other exploitation of the immigration issue. But in the long term, it might just come back to haunt them.

Check out this Latino Decisions poll, taken in the wake of the Supreme Court's SB 1070 ruling and Obama's administrative mini-Dream Act. Obama has his highest numbers ever in the poll:

Latino Decisions released new national poll of Latino registered voters showing Barack Obama winning 70% of the Latino vote compared to 22% for Mitt Romney. The poll, commissioned by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and America’s Voice, illustrates an increase in support for President Obama, and comes after a month of outreach to Latino voters, starting with the June 15 Dream announcement, appearances by the President and Vice President at NALEO and NCLR conferences, and comments opposing Arizona’s SB1070 immigration law. This poll marks the first time Obama has received 70% of the vote in Latino Decisions polling on the presidential election over the past 20 months.

Obama maintains a substantial lead over Romney within nearly all segments of the Latino electorate. Among foreign-born, naturalized citizens Obama leads 72% to 19% and among U.S.-born Latinos he leads 69% to 25%. Similarly, Obama polls ahead of Romney by a large margin, 76% to 15% among Spanish dominant Latinos, and also has a healthy lead of 66% to 28% from English dominant. Two concerns for Romney may be that 13% of self-identified Latino Republicans say they will cross-over and vote for Obama and 60% of Independents plan to vote for Obama. In contrast only 2% of Democrats say they plan to vote for Romney.

Pima County Sheriff candidate Mark Napier tells 9OYS, "Joe is very tenacious, but the issue has been put to bed." GOP committeeman Bruce Ash says, "the economy is the party's focus."

"Quite frankly it's just stupid," said Republican city councilman Steve Kozachik.

JUDGE UPHOLDS VOTER RIGHTS'; OVERTURNS BENNETT'S PETITION REJECTION

Following a hearing lasting approximately 20 minutes, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge today upheld the rights of Arizona voters, saying that Secretary of State Ken Bennett's decision to reject 290,849 petition signatures to place the Quality Education and Jobs citizens' initiative on the November ballot was unconstitutional.

"I honestly don't know why we need to be here," said Judge Robert Oberbillig during the proceedings.

"Judge Oberbillig's ruling reaffirms what the Arizona's Constitution and state law make very clear - a hyper-technicality is never grounds to overturn the rights of Arizona voters," said Ann-Eve Pedersen, chair of the Quality Education and Jobs campaign. "Education opponents know there is vast popular support for this initiative, so they had to resort to these types of desperate measures to try to keep it off the ballot. We were always confident that the will of Arizona voters would prevail in court, and with this ruling, we are now even more confident that Prop. 204 will prevail in November."

The last time we talked to Leslie Ann Epperson, she was screening a preview of her All Souls Procession documentary, Many Bones, One Heart, and asking the community to share their own All Souls Procession-inspired stories.

This month, Epperson kicked off an Indiegogo campaign to help raise $7,000 to complete the project. She's raised $1,820 and the campaign ends Saturday, Aug. 11. When we touched base with her about the campaign, Epperson told us that part of the dollars raised for the project will go to hire shooters. While she will film parts of the documentary, Epperson said she continues to recover from a car accident that's left her unable to do all the videography herself.

"I really believe in this story and its value—it will show the enormous power of people using creativity to heal sorrow, it will depict the range of talent and skill of Tucson's arts community and present the generosity of those artists as they try to keep the ASP healthy," Epperson wrote to us. "It will portray the importance of telling our stories and showing our common humanity (building tolerance) and show the ability of the people to claim their public spaces. It will be a wonderful showcase for life in the Borderlands, and will also portray some material about Day of the Dead. And it will be compelling, because unknown to the general public, every year the challenges facing the organizers threaten to overwhelm the enterprise."

Epperson added that the most important theme is the way the All Souls Procession and the Procession of Little Angels (a procession organized for children as part of the project) helps people heal from loss.

"I have had plenty of loss in my own life and it helped me to make some experimental videos about those people, and about loss. I saw people doing the same kind of thing at the All Souls Procession and it really moved me. I did not plan on making a long documentary about it—but as I began to understand how important the event is, and how hard some people work to make it happen, I realized it deserved to be an hour long or longer," she wrote.

Arizona Sen. John McCain today tore into five GOP House members—including Arizona Congressman Trent Franks and Congresswoman/onetime GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann—for accusing an aide to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton of being a mole for the Muslim Brotherhood. NPR Reports:

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., took to the Senate floor Wednesday in an apparent attempt to shame Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and other House GOP lawmakers who recently questioned whether a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was a fifth columnist for the Muslim Brotherhood.

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, didn't mention Bachmann by name, but it was clear his comments were aimed at her and some House GOP colleagues who have requested an investigation of Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Clinton, among others.

McCain's remarks, as transcribed by NPR:

Republican Sean Collins lit into Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll at yesterday’s Pima County Republican Club luncheon.

Among Collins' gripes: Carroll had been registered as a Democrat in the 1990s before switching to the Republican Party. Carroll has led opposition to the Rosemont Mine. He hasn’t done enough to create jobs. He doesn’t work hard enough and ignores Republican voters except during election season. He hasn’t fixed enough potholes and has supported putting water stations in the desert to help migrant border crossers who are dying of thirst. He has supported the purchase of open space and has hamstrung developers with too many impact fees.

“The incumbent, my opponent, has been there for 15-plus years and he’s too comfortable in his chair, folks,” said Collins, a retired Air Force veteran who owns a Dairy Queen in Vail.

As Collins (who was followed as a speaker Tuesday by Rosemont Mine CEO Rod Pace) ran through his indictment, Carroll sat among the crowd at a table, a smile regularly crossing his face. He didn’t address the crowd that had assembled for lunch in the back room of El Parador restaurant, although he’s scheduled to be a speaker at the weekly event next month.

But Carroll tells The Weekly he’s been a conservative voice in his representation of District 4, which stretches from the Tanque Verde Valley to Green Valley.

“I’ve got the credentials of a fiscal conservative,” says Carroll, who points to his repeated opposition to a proposed countywide sales tax and his regular votes against County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry’s budgets.

“I’ve led the district on other conservative issues,” Carroll adds. “I’m pro-gun. I’m a devout Catholic who’s pro-life, from conception to natural death.”

But Carroll’s record has left some members of Tuesday crowd unhappy with him.

No judgment, but George Romney (Craig's grandfather) was born to Mormons who fled the United States to Mexico because of federal attempts to regulate polygamy (Miles Romney left America in disguise with one of his wives, meeting the others in Mexico). This is not exactly the same experience and difficulty that people wishing to immigrate to the United States are exactly facing. It probably wasn't easy when the Romneys (and others) were forced out of their Mexican homes back into America by the Mexican Revolution, but to try to make this particular comparison (the Romneys understand your plight, Spanish speaker! We're just like you!) seems considerably tone-deaf.
