If you're a Tucson voter, you should have already received a ballot for this year's City Council elections. In an ongoing effort to let you know who these candidates are, the Weekly co-sponsored a candidate forum with the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce last week. Access Tucson was on the scene to record the whole thing, which you can watch above. The candidates talked about relations between the biz community and the city, the future of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, the impact of SB 1070, pension reform, and those darn cameras that bust speeders and people who run red lights. PHOENIX — Goodbye, gas stations. We may soon use algae to power our cars.

University of Arizona researchers have been granted $8 million dollars by the Department of Energy to continue researching how to use algae to make biofuel, animal feed and plastics over the next four years.

"Our goal is to provide algal biofuel at a production cost equal to the cost of petroleum," said Randy Ryan, assistant director of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, a component of UA's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The researchers are using the Regional Algal Feedstock Testbed to develop continuous algae production across the Southwest. With algae production, Ryan said they should be able to address three major areas of interest to the general consumer.

This is the closest thing to male strip club you're going to get, ladies.

Tucson is full of beautiful people, and some are male believe it or not. There's a burlesques cult following here and The Surly Wench feel like the staple for most of these provocative shows. Unfortuanly, I have never seen a strip tease show there but I have seen one at a speakeasy on (of all places) the south side.


I'd rather watch some sexy ladies do the dancing but this idea sounds fun to me. I can only imagine what lies beneath the flannels and breakaway skinny jeans. Howe Gelb is the latest local musician to visit the Stairwell Sessions, an Arizona Public Media segment dreamed up by engineer extraordinaire Jim Blackwood, who records his guests in the stairwell of the UA Modern Languages Building in order to capture some unique acoustics. You can hear Gelb's entire 40-minute performance and listen to his interview with Arizona Spotlight host Mark McLemore here.

Our new Nosher noted not too long ago that Beyond Bread's Campbell location filed an application to serve liquor in an attempt to stir up business in the evenings.

Well, as of two weeks ago, Beyond Bread has begun selling beer and wine alongside their Best of Tucson© award-winning bread, sandwiches and desserts—and they've got a pretty good starting selection.

For those who can't be bothered to look at the picture at right, Beyond Bread's beer list is all craft, all the time, with local representation from Dragoon Brewing's Stronghold Session Ale and Barrio Brewing's Tucson Blonde, as well as Chandler-based SanTan Brewing's Hefeweizen Wheat Ale. Left Hand's Milk Stout Nitro, Bell's Brewery's Two Hearted Ale and Goose Island's 312 Urban Wheat round out the list.

As for the fermented grape drink, Beyond Bread is offering A22 Pino Grigio, District 7 Chardonnay, Copain Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard whose name I regrettably forgot to write down.

Good news: Each beer is only $4.50 per glass. Better news: They'll fill to-go growlers for you right there at the shop for 12 bucks.

I haven't yet taken advantage of the opportunity, as I didn't have my growler handy when I last went into Beyond Bread (truly a mistake on my part), but I plan on doing so at some point soon, seeing as Beyond Bread is (to my knowledge) the closest place to my little corner of Tucson to offer growler fills.

No word yet on whether or not Beyond Bread is planning to sell fermentables at their other locations, but i can't imagine they'd pass up on the possibility if this goes well.

Some of you know Gregory E. Carpenter, and others know him as Dr. Danger. The former Tucson resident is in the new History Channel reality show American Daredevils that debuts Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Check out former Tucson Weekly writer Adam Borowitz's blog post about the time Dr. Danger lit Borowitz and his wife on fire.


I have heard nothing but nice things about Dr. Danger, and him being on the show couldn't happen to a nicer guy. There will be a premiere party at (one of Dr. Danger's favorite Tucson spots) The Buffet Bar & Crock Pot, 538 East Ninth Street. The Facebook event page says the festivities commence at 7 p.m. and there will be free giveaways like Fireball Whiskey, t-shirts, Team Danger daredevil crew autographs and more.

Gregory E. Carpenter, “Dr. Danger,” worked a number of jobs in his past life, but nothing proved exciting enough. “I used to have a real job,” he says. “But I hated it, so I became a daredevil.” For 20 years, this charismatic, quick-witted daredevil has zigzagged his way across the United States in a $300 Suburban hitched to a trailer full of ramps and explosives. Along with his ragtag group of daredevil pirates, Danger earns a living jumping cars, lighting himself on fire and blowing himself up at monster truck rallies, racetracks, county fairs and festivals. He does it all for a couple thousand dollars and the thrills that keep him going from show to show. It’s a dangerous way to make a living, but as Dr. Danger says, “It ain’t killed me yet.”

Two-time governor and one-time pregnant man Arnold Schwarzenegger took to Reddit late last week to promote his latest film, Escape Plan, in an amusing fashion. He took requests for his infamous one-liners and he delivered them, freshly recorded, on his Youtube page.

I'm glad he's got a good sense of humor, I hope he was still laughing when he saw Escape Plan's returns over the opening weekend. Ouch!

The American Cancer Society is looking to fill 300,000 spots in a new cancer prevention study called CPS-3.

It's a 20 year-long project that studies how genetics, lifestyle choices and environmental factors can cause or prevent getting cancer.

"We know the causes of cancer to some degree," said Dr. Alpa Patel, principal investigator of the CPS-3. "By looking at all these different factors and the way that they work together, we can get to that point where we can get to understand exactly how and why cancer develops."

In order to be eligible to participate in the CPS-3, you must be 30- to 65-years-old, have no personal history of cancer and be willing to commit to filling out surveys periodically for a long time, which can be more than 20 years. During enrollment, you will be asked to read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, get measurements done and provide a small blood sample.

"We don't ask you to change anything about what you do," Patel said. "The purpose of these studies is to observe what a large population is doing."

Among the topics: Whether Tucson is business friendly; what Broadway Boulevard should look like in the future; whether the city should require background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows on city property; whether the city is doing enough to keep Davis-Monthan Air Force Base open; and whether the modern streetcar is a good idea.
