Neko Case might not have left Tucson on the best terms in 2009, but she's riding the wave of another critically adored album, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (released in September of last year and up for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Album category) and returning to town as part of the Coachella influx.

Tickets for the April 12 show, with The Dodos and Dylan Pratt opening, are $28 (general admission) or $36 (reserved balcony) and go on sale Friday. They won't be available for long, I suspect.

We are hosting monthly happy hours at various dive bars around Tucson to celebrate our "Dirty 30" all year long. The endless Birthday madness will occur every second Wednesday starting on Jan. 8 at the World Famous Golden Nugget, 2617 N. 1st Ave.

The latest Muppets Most Wanted Trailer beats the actual trailer that's showing in theaters. Instead of quoting pretentious critics, who haven't seen the movie, the trailer quotes tweets by young tweets that were probably written by teens. The Muppets are always pretty topical, but they 'totes' nailed the internet jargon in this one:

A new record label with strong Tucson ties is in the works.

Proclaiming "We believe in the transcendent power of rock 'n' roll," Seth Olinsky (from the experimental folk-rock band Akron/Family) introduces us to Lightning Records, more of an arts and music collective than a traditional record label.

Olinsky and conceptual artist Ali Beletic started Lightning Records to focus on sharing music and other art with a like-minded group of musicians, adventurers, surfers, dirtbike enthusiasts and builders, racecar enthusiasts, premier coffee roasters, fashion and product designers.

Though Olinsky and Beletic live in Los Angeles, they say the spirit of the project comes straight out of the time they spent living in Tucson, where Olinsky began performing his Cy Dune side project and Beletic created large-scale sculptural works with a strong connection to the desert.

"Both the land and the community there were so inspiring, the perfect place to dream and make music and art, and the most amazing community to get inspired by and share inspirations," Olinsky says.

Big time Hollywood director Michael Bay was invited to Samsung's Consumer Electronics Show to promote some of their products on Monday, but something went horribly awry. Bay started answering simple questions about his work, but stage fright set in when his teleprompter shuts off less than a minute into the interview. You can see the Transformers director was getting anxious, so he just left the stage.

Legendary Canadian born actor Larry D. Mann passed away due age-related causes Monday in Los Angeles. Mann was best known for voicing Yukon Cornelius in the timeless Christmas animated film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The veteran actor started his career in the 1950s. Mann also starred in Howdy Doody, The Green Hornet, Bewitched and The Octagon.

Jacob Breckenridge and Pauly Casillas are hosting an extra special Switch comedy show tonight at Plush, 340 East 6th St. Phoenix comedians Matt Storrs and Eric Biez are the special guest headliners. I'm going to perform some improve comedy with fellow local comedians Michael Cheli, Amanda Hurley, Michael Dean, Justin Tietjin, Josiah Osego and Ryan Malchow will shoot from the hip and take the stage at 9 p.m.

Genghis Grill, home of the build your own stir fry, is issuing a nationwide challenge called Healthy Kwest. The chain restaurant's appointed judges will pick 110 finalist by noon on Monday, Jan. 27, and one of those lucky applicants could be in Tucson. The finalist have to eat one free daily meal from Genghis Grill for 60 days ($599 retail value) and will get a free gym membership during the challenge. The progress will be documented and promoted on various GG social media outlets. The grand prize winner will win $10,000 on (approximately)  April 16th. There are cash prizes for the second and third place winners.

There are qualifications and an extensive survey you must fill out, but the potential benefits outweigh the vigorous screening process. The criteria to win, aside from losing weight, will rely on application completion (50%) and social media presence (50%).

A recall effort is in the works to unseat three members of the Pima Community College governing board.

Former state lawmaker Phil Lopes tells The Range that paperwork was filed today to begin the process of gathering signatures to knock Scott Stewart and Marty Cortez. A recall effort against a third board member, David A. Longoria, is likely to start next month, according to Lopes.

PCC Board member Brenda Even isn’t going to be targeted because she’s up for reelection in November, so her political opponents will just try to defeat her then, Lopes says.

PCC has had a troubling few years, culminating with the school being put on probation by the Higher Learning Commission, an accrediting agency. Much of the controversy occurred under the leadership of former chancellor Roy Flores, who resigned in 2012.

Lopes says a recall is necessary because “these people were responsible for putting Pima's accreditation in jeopardy. It was on their watch that things happened during the Flores era. We don't think they're taking care of the college or the community.”
