• Incumbent candidate Ron Barber (CD-2) takes the stage to address his supporters with his family standing behind, stating he was optimistic as early results showed him in the lead over Republican candidate Martha McSally.

Congressman Ron Barber, who was up by about 4 percentage points, delivered a triumphant speech at the Democratic Party's celebration.

"We're ahead now and we're gonna win this race," Barber said.

Barber was in a rematch against Republican Martha McSally, who lost to Barber by just 2,500 votes in 2012.

An unknown number of votes remain to be counted, but Barber was leading by about 5,000 votes.

Barber took the stage as the crowd chanted his name.

"We said from the start that this campaign was going to be about issues and about policies and not about personalities," Barber said. "We took the high road, not the low road."

Carolyn Cox, the Chairman of the Pima Country Republican Party, was enjoying the party while a large group grew in front of her, their attention focused on the election results on television.

She felt she had reason to celebrate; the G.O.P. had just become the majority in the Senate, making it the first time in eight years that the Republican Party has had control of both chambers of Congress.

“President Obama has not been behaving legally or following the constitution, and he shouldn’t be doing that,” Cox said. “And I think the American people have said, ‘You shouldn’t be doing that.’ So I’m excited.”

However, her excitement only went so far, as the party was relatively quieter after learning about Democrat Ron Barber’s lead over Martha McSally in the Congressional race.

“We’re still thousands of votes to go,” She said. “Let’s wait till tomorrow to see [what happens].”

At her election-night party Tuesday evening, Republican congressional candidate Martha McSally said she was proud of her campaign.

McSally was trailing Democratic incumbent Congressman Ron Barber by about 4 percentage points with an unknown number of votes left to count. McSally complained that she had faced a barrage of attack ads during her campaign that were ridiculous and inaccurate.

“The challenge has been again, countering the lying attack ads that are trying to turn me into something that I’m not in order to instill fear in the voters,” McSally said. “So we’ve had to spend time to make sure that people know exactly who I am, correct the record, and you know, that’ll take time and effort.”

McSally said her campaign did everything possible to get her message out and election night was the time to celebrate the effort and the journey of the campaign.

“As a challenger, you’re having to make a case as to why an incumbent should be replaced,” McSally said. “I can look myself in the mirror and say we did that with integrity and we did everything we could to get our message out.”

If she does not win the election, McSally said she does not yet know her next step.

“I can’t even think about that right now,” McSally said. “We’ll see what happens.”

Terry Lavery was one of many people lined up against the wall, watching as the Republican election night party celebrated after Doug Ducey was declared the new governor of Arizona.

“I’m kind of surprised that it happened that quickly with that small percentage of votes,” he said.

Ducey, who was the 32nd State Treasurer of Arizona, won his election with almost 54% of the votes and with just over half of the precincts reporting.

“I hope that he keeps a balanced budget, as far as what he has to do with the economy,” Lavery said. “I also hope that he builds a better relationship with the rest of the nation as far as the perception of Arizona and being good for businesses coming to town.”

In the Tucson Unified School District race, Adelita S. Grijalva is leading with 20 percent of the vote in the nine-way race for two seats. In second place (and also poised to get a seat on the board) is Jen Darland, who is leading incumbent Michael Hicks by about 400 votes.

Martha McSally, a retired United State Air Force Colonel, put her military background front and center in her campaign, so it's no surprise to see retired military members supporting her at the GOP celebration.

“She stands up and listens and stands behind what she believes in,” said Peter Carpenter a former United States Combat Pilot. “We fought wars to make this what it is and I’m not ready to give it up.”

“It’s time for leadership like hers,” added Paul Faust a former United States rescue pilot.

Tiana Goossem spoke with McSally Sunday night about immigration and saving the A1-10s.

"She is so humble and down to earth after serving the country for the past 26 years," she said.
