Arizona Biennial 2018 at the Tucson Museum of Art. Artwork from all over the state was juried into this exhibition by guest juror Rebecca R. Hart, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum. Works by dozens of artists, in dozens of mediums, will be on display in the James J. and Louse R. Glasser Galleries, the Chann Gallery and the Green Gallery. After all, you can’t spell “Tucson, Arizona” without “art.” On display through Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Tucson Museum of Art, 140 N. Main Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. $12 adults, $10 seniors 65+, $7 college students with ID and youth 13-17, free for kids 12 and under, veterans and museum members. Dog Days of Summer menu. Bring your four-legged friends to Café Botanica inside the Tucson Botanical Gardens from now until Sept. 30 for a chance to try out the café’s new menu. Your dog can enjoy an upgrade from their bone; the café is debuting three different options from a dog-friendly menu, such as a hamburger, chicken and rice or a handmade dog biscuit. For the humans, the café offers a menu including apricot-glazed chicken, sweet cornbread strata and more. To visit the café, pay the Tucson Botanical Gardens’ admission, which for non-members is $15 for adults and $8 for children over 3. So, the question is, would the snake eat the guinea pig? And who would be left to eat the corn fritters?
Guinea Pigs, originally from Peru and the western coast of South America, belong to a family of rodents called Cavies. In the wild, Guinea Pigs live in herds, and that is the cutest thing you'll read all day.
Snakes, today's slithering second, also have some pretty interesting qualities. For example, snakes do not have eyelids, and they are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Are you a snake person or a guinea pig person? Which side of the pet store makes you say "aww"? Or are you the dad who just wants his kids to hurry up at the pet store so you can go to lunch? If so, then the third holiday of the day might be for you: National Corn Fritter Day.
Corn Fritters come in many varieties and have no definite origin. They are popular in the South , but also have varieties from Jamaica, Costa Rica and other corn-growing regions around the world. They are simple to make and require only a few ingredients that you might even have in your pantry already. Celebrate the day and make some for dinner!

We're midway through the doldrums of summer in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, which means that college basketball is four months away.
The Pac-12 Conference released its yearly breakdown of home and away games between conference foes, starting the week of January 2 and ending the week of March 6.
The University of Arizona's quest to repeat as regular season conference champions begins with road games against the University of Colorado and Utah, followed by a Bay Area swing through Stanford and Cal the following week.
The 'Cats home opener will take place the week of January 16, when Oregon and Oregon State come to the Old Pueblo, followed by UCLA and USC the following week.
The biannual rivalry with the Arizona State Sun Devils takes place the week of Jan. 30—when Arizona will travel to Tempe's Wells Fargo Arena, followed by a home clash at McKale on the final weekend of the season, on the week of March 6.
All times and TV carriers will be announced at a later date for said games, with all 108 of the Pac-12 conference contests carried by either the Pac-12 Network, ESPN, Fox or CBS.

Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.Retiring Sen. Jeff Flake was more succinct on Twitter:
President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.
It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout – as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putin’s regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.
Coming close on the heels of President Trump’s bombastic and erratic conduct towards our closest friends and allies in Brussels and Britain, today’s press conference marks a recent low point in the history of the American Presidency. That the president was attended in Helsinki by a team of competent and patriotic advisors makes his blunders and capitulations all the more painful and inexplicable.
No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant. Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are—a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad. American presidents must be the champions of that cause if it is to succeed. Americans are waiting and hoping for President Trump to embrace that sacred responsibility. One can only hope they are not waiting totally in vain.
But will either McCain or Flake do anything about it?I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful.

This beloved music venue, watering hole and figurative safehouse has been host to everything from raw hip-hop to heretical Scandinavian black metal. No musical genre was ever off limits.
Supporting both sweaty-palmed local up-and-comers and established international touring acts, the nightclub united an equally diverse enclave of hardcore music junkies, barstool philosophers and weekend revelers alike.
With the final curtain closing, the staff of The Flycatcher responded this last weekend with four nights of Tucson’s finest musical acts and plenty of other friends to honor and celebrate the occasion, welcoming all to come kiss The Flycatcher goodbye.
Until the ever-turning wheel of creation and death buds new life, rest in peace. You shall be missed.

Does the video to “Tombstone Rashomon,” XIXA’s latest single, draw any philosophical parallels to Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 Japanese allegorical period piece, Rashōmon? Or to director Alex Cox’s take on the historic Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone-Rashomon (2017)? It’s a thorny matter. The whistled melody line in the song, however, does nod towards Ennio Morricone’s epic theme to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). Scope out the stunning video—directed by Lesli Wood and Daniel Martin Diaz—for clues. And ask them yourself when the psychedelic cumbancheros return to Club Congress on Friday, July 20.

Tucson is brimming with artistic talent, but resources to help support that talent are not as abundant. The LifeBlood Workshop was formed by a group of artists and experts to help facilitate discussions around mental health in the creative field.
This evening from 6 to 8 p.m. the LifeBlood Workshop will be in Tucson to offer a two-hour conversation with the goal of brainstorming solutions and decreasing the stress and anxiety associated with the artistic lifestyle.
According to their website, “the rate of depression and suicide among musicians and creatives is three times that of non-musicians. The pressure of being in the public eye, of having to create and still have some sort of personal life can lead to bad decisions. Professionals may prescribe medication for the symptoms, but it doesn’t solve the underlying problem.”
The workshop will include a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A session and small group settings where artists will be given the chance to tell their stories and talk about their issues in a judgement-free environment. It’s a chance to receive advice from the experts and other attendees who share the same experiences.
The LifeBlood team, which consists of career artists and health and wellness experts, have a singular goal: to provide an alternative approach in helping the creative community manage mental and physical wellness.
The workshop will be held today, July 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spark Project Collective, a nonprofit organization that produces local art to raise money for local children with disabilities. Their building is located at 4349 E. Broadway Blvd.

If you enjoy cheesy, low-tech sci-fi movies, and have $3 to spare, you should make your way over to The Loft Cinema this evening for a special screening of “The Time Travelers.”
This 1964 release is the second installment of July’s Mondo Movie Mondays series, with a common theme the staff have affectionately dubbed “Trashy Time Travel.”
According to The Loft Cinema website, “The Time Travelers” is about the journey of three scientists and their trusty simpleton, who travel to the future via portal and discover a devastating post-apocalyptic reality that resulted from an atomic war. Their mission is to find any surviving humans, while fighting off radiation mutants, and leave Earth in search of another planet to inhabit. The Loft Cinema staff gave it the following synopsis:
“A colorfully nutty trip into the future buoyed by an extravagantly ‘60s camp aesthetic (encompassing a pop art Android Factory, a futuristic Tanning Salon and Spa frequented by women with giant beehive hairdos and a Love Machine for those “very special times”), The Time Travelers also somehow finds room for a relevant environmental message and a twist ending that will make your future so bright, you’ll just HAVE to wear shades!”
The movie starts at 8 p.m. and costs $3 for regular admission, $2 for Loft members.
