The University of Arizona Cancer Center and Banner – University Medicine will educate the community about breast cancer risk in an outreach event on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon in Building 2 at the UA Cancer Center – North Campus, 3838 N. Campbell Ave. The event is open to the public.
The presentation, titled “Are You at High Risk for Breast Cancer?” will cover a range of topics, including genetics, preventive surgery, risk reduction and clinical trials.
Personal risk counseling will be offered to all attendees who wish to participate. Visitors need no appointment to receive this assessment.
“Every woman with breasts has about a 12-percent chance of getting breast cancer at some point in her life,” said Beth High, M.S.N., breast oncology nurse navigator. “Plus, there are some specific risk factors that can affect that risk, some that you have control over, and some that you cannot control. For example, people have control over their lifestyle choices. Those who are overweight, drink more alcohol or don’t exercise may have an increased risk for developing breast cancer.”
While people can make the decision to drink less and exercise more, some risk factors are immutable.

Arizona became an early adopter in the privatization/"education reform" movement almost a quarter century ago when it opened its first charter schools.
From the beginning, the Republicans pushing charter schools had two overlapping goals: open as many charters as possible, and regulate them as little as possible. They're fine using taxpayer money to fund the schools, but their mantra has always been, "Keep your government hands off my charters!" They've kept rules and regulations as few and as toothless as possible.
As a result Arizona has the highest number of charter schools per capita in the country, though other states are catching up. We also have some of the worst examples of unchecked profiteering and what can only be described as legal corruption in the charter school sector you're going to find anywhere.
I'll get to the most recent example of profiteering and corruption involving State Representative Eddie Farnsworth (R, LD-12) in a minute, but first let me make one thing absolutely clear. Republicans have had plenty of opportunities to increase transparency and tighten financial rules on charter schools. The media has written articles about problems for years. Democratic legislators have proposed legislation to put a check on some of charter school operators' worst practices. Republicans have purposely ignored the media warnings and shot down Democratic legislation at every turn. If they retain their control over the legislature and the governor's office, nothing is going to change. You can bet money on it. However, if Democrats increase their power November 6, there's a good chance we'll see increased transparency and tighter regulation, which will, ironically, improve the quality of the charter schools Republicans hold so dear.
Now, to Rep. Farnsworth, who has figured out a way to turn charter schools into a multimillion dollar goldmine.

PACC currently has 438 dogs and puppies and 225 cats and kittens, which is the most animals that the Center has had all year.
“Our summer intake spike came later than usual this year,” said PACC Director of Animal Services Kristen Auerbach in a press release. “The volume of animals is tough for us, but means a great selection of puppies, dogs, cats and kittens for our fosters and adopters. Whatever kind of pet you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it at PACC now.”
PACC is open seven days a week for adoptions and fosters, but this weekend, starting today and running through Sept. 17, the center is participating in PetSmart Charities National Adoption weekend. This means that adoption fees for dogs and cats are waived at local PetSmart locations and at the main shelter, at 4000 N. Silverbell Road.
All pets adopted from PACC come spayed or neutered, with vaccinations, microchip and one free vet visit. Dogs require a 19 dollar licensing fee.

The first episode, which aired on Wednesday, is ironically called "The End." There have been extremely mixed feelings about the new season amongst fans, critics and press.
Collider, an internet news source for new movies and television shows, wrote an article that refers to the new season as a "mixed bag of meh."
The idea behind the season is that a nuclear apocalypse desolates the planet. Two young adults are preselected to be saved and are subsequently taken to an underground safe place called "Outpost" that seems more like a prison, at least from this first episode.
Along with the two youngsters in the safety lair are a select few of the world's most wealthy people. Some are brats and some are down-to-Earth, but now they're in the same boat — the world has been destroyed and they're forbidden to leave this strange place. At one point, they're fed the human meat of one man who had been there but tried to run away and, due to the nuclear apocalypse, was radioactively contaminated.
This new series is off to a strange start and, as perviously mentioned, American Horror Story fans are having mixed reactions to the first episode.
It is doubtful, though, that those feelings stop them from watching the second episode, which airs next Wednesday, Sept. 19th.

Registration is at 7 a.m.
Put on by the Community Food Bank, this event raises funds and awareness for the fight against hunger. There will be music, entertainment, games, activities, snacks and more.
The walk will traverse 1.5 miles through the Community Food Bank’s food pantry, main warehouse and gardens. Walkers will learn about hunger, the programs and services of the food bank and how they can get involved.
Bring your friends and family, the walk will be fun for all ages!

Yesterday marked the sixth day in a row of triple digit temps in Tucson. While 100+ temperatures are nothing new for Southern Arizona, having this many in a row is uncommon.
If temperatures reach 100 today, which it’s likely they will, it will be tied for the fifth-longest streak in Tucson history for temperatures over 100.
WeatherBug predicts triple digits will persist through Saturday, with temperatures in the high 90s predicted for early next week. There is also a small chance of isolated storms on Wednesday and Thursday along with possible temps in 80s. Read more about Tucson’s longest streaks here.

Legendary Teacher Day, is on Thursday, Sept. 27, presented by the Pima County School Superintendent Dustin J. Williams.
Williams is partnering with Nicholas Clement, who established the day of tribute to teachers in 2014. Clement has a doctoral degree in education, has been a long time school administrator and spent his career celebrating teachers.
As a way of thanking our teachers, Clement and Williams have invited the community to recognize a teacher that has affected lives and careers.
Some of the tributes submitted will be collected and the teachers will be represented with a gift card as an expression of gratitude.
The Legendary Teacher Reception will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. to honor teachers and announce the Superintendent Award.
