How does an elephant celebrate her birthday? At the Reid Park Zoo, the occasion is marked with songs, pachyderm treats and cupcakes for her human friends.
Nandi, the zoo’s African elephant, turns 5 this Sunday, and the whole town’s invited. Learn all about this amazing elephant species, sing Nandi “Happy Birthday,” watch her eat her favorite treats and enjoy some African Music and entertainment.
The celebration kicks off this Sunday, Aug. 18, at 8 a.m. at the Reid Park Zoo, 3400 E. Zoo Court.
Schedule of Activities
· 8:10 a.m. Free birthday cupcakes for the first 100 guests
· 8:15 a.m. African drumming and dancing presented by African Diaspora Showcase
· 8:30 a.m. Sing “Happy Birthday” to Nandi and watch her receive her favorite treats
· 8:45 a.m. Elephant dance performance by African Diaspora Showcase
· 9:00 a.m. Elephant-themed activities and keeper chats
“Nandi is an ambassador for her species,” said Sue Tygielski, PhD, director of zoo operations. “We are celebrating her life and birthday, but we are also celebrating the lives of wild elephant herds too.”
Nandi’s Fifth Birthday Bash is free with zoo admission of $10.50 for adults; $8.50 for seniors and $6.50 for children. Zoo members receive free admission. For more information on Reid Park Zoo, visit the website at reidparkzoo.org.

Time for another episode of T.H.R.E.A.T (Trump Human Rights Erosion And Termination) Watch.
Anthony Scaramucci, one time Trump sycophant who lost his White House Communications Director job after 11 days because he was trying to out-Trump Trump, is not someone I normally take seriously. He's self-important, pompous, preening and generally obnoxious. But given the toxic political environment we live in, anyone who plays the role of canary in the coal mine is worth paying attention to.
Scaramucci tweeted out this warning Sunday.

With Ducey's signature, the committee can begin working toward finding causes and solutions to these crimes, which starts with better collaboration and record-keeping between different law enforcement entities. Those solutions could lead to future legislation introduced to the Arizona legislature.
The committee will include members of state, local and tribal law enforcement, representatives from several Arizona tribes, family members of the murdered and missing women and girls and additional victim advocates.
“In some tribal communities American Indian women face murder rates 10 times the national rate, yet, there is little to no data to show what exactly is happening,” Senator Victoria Steele said in a press release. “We can’t allow our Native sisters to just disappear at this rate and not draw attention to it. Today, we are taking action by shedding light on this issue and finally giving it the attention it deserves.”
Ducey said this crisis has been endured by Indigenous communities "for far too long." He extended thanks to Sen. Steele and Rep. Jermaine for taking on the task of getting this bill passed.

The Diamondbacks, who enter their 22nd season in 2020, will host their season opener for the 16th time in franchise history.
The team will also host the Chicago Cubs at the end of April 30, with home games on Father's Day (June 21) and the Fourth of July.
Phoenix's MLB franchise will square off against teams from the American League West and Central, with the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals visiting Chase Field during the 162-game campaign.
