Although not as blood-soaked as you might expect, the Bowie Chamber of Commerce officially announced Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019 to be "Rambo Day" as in, yes, the Sylvester Stallone 'Rambo.' This is in celebration of the fact that, in the upcoming sequel Rambo: Last Blood, Stallone's titular character once-again calls Bowie his home.

The Bowie Chamber of Commerce proclaimed the special day with legitimate paperwork, stating "Whereas the message carried by Rambo is a timely and cautionary one, showcasing the true cost of battle, the dilemmas faced by those who seek vengeance, and the virtue of protecting the downtrodden; now, therefore, be it resolved that the Bowie Chamber of Commerce does hereby proclaim September 18, 2019 as Rambo Day."

The small Arizona town is taking advantage of the publicity and marketing, and encouraging all businesses and community members to watch the movie.

It should be noted: according to the 2010 census, Bowie has a population of 449, which is less than Rambo's 504 kills across the four-movie franchise. And we can expect that number to grow only higher in this fifth installment, which releases Friday, Sept. 20.

Phantogram: Wednesday, Sept. 18 @ Rialto Theatre.
Last year when this electronic rock duo was in town, vocalist Sarah Barthel and guitarist Josh Carter took the audience through the hills and valleys of love—from the euphoria of "Fall In Love" to the dispirited realization that "You Don't Get Me High Anymore." At song's end, Barthel said coyly, "We've all got a little bit of hoe in us." Indeed. Phantogram play the Rialto Theatre. With the "scruffy-sounding" bedroom pop-rock of Hana Vu.

Propelled by three accordions and synthesizers, cumbia sonidera rhythms have become as emblematic of Mexico as tacos and tequila, yet this musical style originated in Colombia, before crossing borders. Los Ángeles Azules bring their 35 years of performance experience to Centennial Hall.

Climate Strike Arizona is hosting a rally at El Presido Park next to Tucson City Hall from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. The rally plans to host elected officials such as State Representative Andres Cano, State Senator Victoria Steele, and Mayoral Candidate Regina Romero to speak about environmental action.

"Arizona youth Climate Strike is demanding that Tucson, like cities across the globe, declares a climate emergency and not only creates, but enacts, a climate change policy plan," says Kyle Kline, Tucson co-lead of Climate Strike Arizona. "This movement is youth led as we are the generation that will be greatest hit with the threat of climate change."

The Climate Strike coincides with a series of climate events happening throughout Arizona and the rest of the world from Sept. 20 to 27, demanding governments enact a climate change policy plan. These also coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit on Sept. 23.

"History shows us that mass movements start with a minority demanding change. The youth of today are that movement," Kline says. "After the strike, with support for local legislators and organizations, we will push for green legislation, respect of indigenous land, environmental justice, protection of biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture. Cities across the world need metrics to analyze and increase their overall sustainability. Our goal is for Tucson to take that step, and in doing so, become a model for cities across the world."

According to Daniel Casanova, Tucson co-lead of Climate Strike Arizona, Tucson has multiple reasons to invest in sustainability.

"We live in one of the sunniest environments in the world, so is there no excuse why we can't plan to go 100 percent renewable in the near future," Casanova says. "We know the Colorado River cannot keep supplying water for our city as we grow and our water habits don't change. Tucson has every reason to care about sustainability. After all, we owe it to the future generations of the world."
