The University of Arizona’s College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Oro Valley, recently received approval from the American Veterinary Medical Association. The approval came in the form of a “Letter of Reasonable Assurance,” granted by the AVMA Council on Education after they visited the veterinary school’s site this May.
The school will be the state's first public College of Veterinary Medicine, and plans to accept its first class of 110 students to begin their studies in August 2020. The College’s year-round curriculum is designed to be “competency-based” with students graduating in only three years. The students will spend their first two years in pre-clinical courses, and will engage in clinical training in private practices for their third year.
"Our goal is that students will have their hands on animals in the first week and all the way through the curriculum," said College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Julie Funk in a press release. "We have a real focus on making sure that students are learning veterinary medicine in context, looking at what they're learning in the classroom and how that relates to what they're going to do in practice."
According to the College's Clinical Rotations plan, "Third-year students will have access to normal and clinically diseased animals through a vast network of more than 250 clinical affiliates."
At full capacity the College will hold three groups of students, 110 each. These students groups will be taught within the program’s headquarters in the former Sanofi laboratory building, and at a second office facility in the Foothills Business Park. The UA also recently purchased and additional building for the College for $4.4 million, located at 10900 N. Stallard Pl.
The College of Veterinary Medicine’s first class, or cohort, of students is expected to graduate in 2023. With the school’s real-world training at zoological facilities like Reid Park Zoo, students are planned to be able to enter the workforce directly out of school.
The Letter of Reasonable Assurance is the first step in the school's accreditation classification. The next step is for the school to begin their Provisional Accreditation, which occurs on the date their first class is admitted. During this provisional period, the College must provide "semiannual reports to assure future compliance” with the AVMA. New veterinary schools are eligible for “full accreditation” after their first class of students graduate.
"We are hopeful that by being able to offer these highly skilled people a professional degree in state, they're more likely to stay in Arizona and serve the people of Arizona," Funk said.

This event asks “what cinematic treasures lurk in the attics and garages of Tucson?” While it might not be As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty, this is a celebration of local home movies. The Loft Cinema is hosting the eighth annual Home Movie Day, and includes expert inspection, preservation advice and screenings of local home movies. Attendees are invited to submit their home movies for inspection and screening consideration in 16mm, 8mm or Super 8 film formats only. No digital or VHS movies. 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. 3233 E. Tucson Zombie Mud Run. Zombies have infiltrated Buckelew Farm! Your job is to make your way through the mud and obstacles—including a swamp, a cadaver climb, a zombie slide, the gates of hell and a trench warfare section—without losing your limbs (represented by two flags). There’s a timed version and a not-timed version of this 5K adventure, with prizes for the top finisher, best costume, most original costume and scariest costume. There’s also a Little Monster Run for kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult, with an obstacle course about a mile long. Monster Mash Fun Run. When was the last time you did a fun run that earned you a glow in the dark finisher’s medal? Our guess is that it’s been too long! Head up to Oro Valley for this course. It’s about three miles long, but there are four stations along the way: one where you eat a slice of pumpkin pie, another where you wash it down with root beer or water, a third where you scale some hay bales and a fourth where you do some limbo. All finishers get to enjoy a barbecue after this evening race, and Oro Valley Parks & Rec will also be throwing a mini-Halloween festival, complete with a Halloween movie, haunted hayrides and jumping castles. 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Tales From the Trash: A Thrift Store Art Show. Have you ever bought a piece of art at a thrift store or yard sale? At a swap meet? Salvaged one from a trash can? If not, you’re totally missing out. Rio Compartido/Shared River Exhibit. There’s a lot of talk about borders these days. But, before there were country borders, there were natural features like the Santa Cruz River, a waterway shared by the United States and Mexico. This art exhibit in Tubac features work by artists from both sides of the border meant to bring attention to the environmental and cultural importance of waterways like the Santa Cruz. At this opening reception, they’ll be present to discuss their work. On the same day, the Smithsonian Institution’s national traveling WaterWays exhibit is opening at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park from 2 to 4 p.m., so this event is designed to be complementary. 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Third Annual Have a Beer for a Bighorn. Dragoon Brewing is home to this weekend’s tastiest, most environmentally friendly event. Membrillo Fest. It’s back! Every year when the quinces ripen, Mission Gardens celebrates “Membrillo Fest.” The quince fruit is similar to a yellow pear, and its tree is known for its pink blossoms. If you don’t know much about the quince, prepare to learn a whole bunch! Membrillo Fest allows the public to try out quince preserves and cajeta de membrillo (sweet quince paste). There will be many quince fruit products available for purchase, as well as a talk about quinces and how to grow them in our environment. 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. 946 W. Mission Lane. Pippin. This 1972 musical that brings together the genius of Stephen Schwartz and Bob Fosse is one of the best-loved shows around. It tells the story of young Prince Pippin, who, like so many of us, is on a quest to find meaning, fulfillment and the chance to be extraordinary. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, in the temptations of the flesh and in the intrigue of political power, but he starts to learn that 1) you can’t make everyone happy all the time and 2) there’s something to be said about finding joy in the small and simple pleasures. But this year at the UA’s celebration of all things buggy, the focus is on the surprising and wonderful fact that more species of native bees live in and around Tucson than any other place in the world. Pippin. This 1972 musical that brings together the genius of Stephen Schwartz and Bob Fosse is one of the best-loved shows around. It tells the story of young Prince Pippin, who, like so many of us, is on a quest to find meaning, fulfillment and the chance to be extraordinary. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, in the temptations of the flesh and in the intrigue of political power, but he starts to learn that 1) you can’t make everyone happy all the time and 2) there’s something to be said about finding joy in the small and simple pleasures. Kingfisher releases Fall Menu. Kingfisher’s chef Jeff Azsersky has updated the lunch and dinner menus for the fall and holiday season, with some returning favorites like warm cabbage salad, bouillabaisse and braised lamb shank. The specialty Bluefin Heath Bar Cheesecake with toffee sauce, from Bluefin (the sister restaurant to Kingfisher closed in 2015), will also make a return. National Republicans have demonized Nancy Pelosi as the "San Francisco Liberal" face of the Democratic party for years. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Maxine Waters are their latest demons of choice. The names change, but the song remains the same.
Arizona Republicans have found themselves a Democratic ogre: Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman. They have launched a steady string of assaults against her, claiming she is trying to destroy the state's system of vouchers while she sexualizes school children by encouraging comprehensive sex education in schools.
There are a few reasons Arizona Republicans chose Kathy Hoffman as their Democratic bête noire.
Hoffman holds state office. That makes her visible statewide, and it also makes her especially dangerous to Republicans' stranglehold on state government. She and Secretary of State Katie Hobbs are the first Democrats to hold Arizona state office since former Attorney General Terry Goddard left in 2011. Currently, Republicans only hold a slim two seat majority in the House, meaning if a single Democrat wins a Republican seat, the House is tied. A two seat Democratic swing in the Senate would tie that body as well. The threat of Arizona becoming a purple state, of Democrats having a say in what goes on, is real. Republicans hope they can hurt Democratic candidates by painting Hoffman as the dangerously radical face of the Democratic party.
Hoffman is also a threat because she is the top educator in a state where education is one of the major battlegrounds. Think RedforEd. Think the attempts by Democrats to make charter schools more transparent and accountable. Think the Republicans' recent, unsuccessful attempt to increase the number of private school vouchers. With Hoffman at the Department of Education helm, Republicans will face resistance in furthering their privatization/"education reform" agenda.
Arizona's education policies are more than a local issue. The education wars are raging nationwide, and Arizona is the tip of the privatization spear. That's why Arizona Republicans are getting a major assist from one of the country's big money conservative education organizations, the American Federation For Children, which, not coincidentally, was founded by Trump's Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
The first major attack on Hoffman was the charge that she wanted to rob Navajo children of a good education. Ten children on the Navajo Reservation have been using Arizona voucher money to attend a private school on the other side of the New Mexico border even though the money isn't supposed to be spent for out-of-state schools. Hoffman's staff noticed the problem and said the students would no longer be able to attend the school using Arizona voucher money.

Nationally prominent comedian Bobby Slayton, known as The Pitbull of Comedy, headlines Stand-Up for Humanity at the PCC Center for the Arts on Friday, Oct. 18. It’s a charity event that introduces a first-time producer, Rene Valdez, and inaugurates the Center for the Arts as a comedy venue. Tickets for the 18+ show are $24 or $35 VIP via Eventbrite.
The ambitious project includes food trucks and a raffle in which show-goers exchange non-perishable food items for a chance to win prizes including a two-day resort package. The food goes to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.
Ticket Proceeds benefit the Esperanza Dance Project and the Forgotten Children Foundation. “My childhood was pretty awesome,” Valdez says. “That’s why I'm deeply saddened about children who are robbed of their childhood. This show is my best effort to help them. Bobby was (my choice) to headline due to his charitable nature and because he was Leonard Cornfeathers on my all-time favorite TV show Family Guy.”
Slayton, often described as intense and energetic, has played more than a dozen such memorable characters. He played Joey Bishop in The Rat Pack, but he was also cast in Ed Wood, Get Shorty and two Woody Allen films, among many others. He’s seen and heard frequently on Sirius FM and HBO.
Valdez filled out the bill with popular Tucson comics Vicente "V" Trejo, Nicole Riesgo, Charles Ludwig and Monté Benjamin. “Hopefully this event will give everyone a small break from the everyday stresses of life.”
Comedians Who Aren't men
Ellen Doyle observes incidentals of daily life and imbues them with twisty, edgy humor. She says she owes her unique outlook to navigating Los Angeles as a Northeast Pennsylvania native. Doyle’s performed at some of the most respected venues in the U.S. as well as the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
At 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, she’ll headline the bimonthly Planned Parenthood benefit, Comedians Who Aren’t Men, at The O. Hosted by producer Autumn Horvat, the lineup includes Savannah Hernandez, Magghie O'Shea, Ashley Tappan, Mariah, Andrea Carmichael, Emma Stephens and Danyella Renae. Don’t you hate those smartasses who quit their jobs, start a podcast, attract millions of fans overnight, then tour the biggest comedy venues in the country? They’re supposed to come up through 30 years of the traditional grind.
Twenty-first-century brats Cody Ko and Noel Miller, AKA, Tiny Meat Gang, used to be software engineers. They have high-paid experience in disrupting things. Comedian Jamie Kilstein (Joe Rogan, Conan, Showtime, CNN) milks the news for all the best jokes to soothe our shattered nerves and screaming consciences. His daily headline snarking can inoculate us from the real thing but also prepare us to dodge landmines around the office party.
