At a press conference tomorrow, folks from Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival (Oct. 12-14) will share some outstanding news — the nonprofit that celebrates everyone and everything in our Arizona-Sonora region received two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Art Works Grants totaling $65,000.

U.S. Congressman Raul Grijalva will announce the grants tomorrow, 11:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Building Lobby & Tucson Pima Arts Council Conference Room, 100 N. Stone Ave. Grijalva will be joined by Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias, TPAC executive director Roberto Bedoya, and Tucson Meet Yourself program director and folklorist Maribel Alvarez. Ethnic food samples will be served from festival regulars Wat Buddhammetta Thai Temple, and other festival ethnic food vendors.

Next week will be a good one to be a Scot in Tucson. Or, at least, a fan of the fruits of Scottish lyrical and comedic labor.

In a four-day span you can see two acts spotlighting a well-known Scot. First up, on Monday (4/16) night, is Garbage, which plays the Rialto Theatre. Garbage, which has been around since the mid-1990s and is fronted by Scottish femme fatale Shirley Manson, has a new album coming out in May.

Three days later, on April 19 (Thursday), you can trek down to Casino del Sol to witness the humor of The Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson.

I believe Kiltlifter Ale is served at both venues.

La Fiesta de los Vaqueros Tucson Rodeo rode into Tucson again this year for its 87th run. Thousands of attendees came from all over the country to participate, compete and to watch the annual tradition.

The Tucson Rodeo will celebrate the late Louise Serpa today, Saturday, at 2 p.m. and will wrap all events on Sunday night. More photos after the jump.

A purse is more than a functional carryall at The Purse Museum, a personal collection of Details Art & Design Gallery owner Vicki Schwager.

Schwager says of her purses:

The collection includes purses/handbags that represent extraordinary style and design. They are antique to contemporary, elegant to functional, humorous to serious, plain and jeweled. Each is more wonderful than the next. They are handmade containers to enjoy.

Check out some of the collection, which will be on display through April 20, at the museum's website.

The Purse Museum is located inside of Details Art & Design Gallery, 3001 E. Skyline Drive.

While there's more and more happening these days up and down Toole Avenue between Sixth Avenue and Stone Avenue, that part of the downtown area hasn't received the same attention as the revitalization of Congress, bookended by the Fox and Rialto. One would be sorely mistaken, however, to ignore the curved road by the railroad tracks. Behind closed doors, there is a tremendous amount of art being created, and sometimes the creativity spills out into the public space.

The Battle Stags Fine Art Garage doesn't have the same level of fame of, say, Solar Culture or Dinnerware on that street. But now, thanks to sculptor and painter Ed Muren III, you know at least have a totem out front to give a quick guidepost to where it is. Tucked behind the BLX Skate Shop at Toole and 7th Ave, Battle Stags now has a pretty killer mural that hints at the creative forces surging behind the roll-up door.

Feel free to get a little crazy as Tucson’s Museum of Contemporary Art mixes an interactive component with the current “Legislate Crazy” exhibition by artist Armando Miguelez. Every Friday, through March 30, visitors can take a picture in the Legislate Crazy Photo Booth with a sign from his compilation of artwork and that picture will be installed as part of the exhibit. It’s a sort of “interactive photo booth,” that allows people in the community to have fun with the artwork on display. Museum visitors can strike a pose, make a face, and be as silly or serious as they like in their pictures.

Miguelez, a Tucson native, has worked in many countries including Mexico, Spain and India. His art touches on various cultural and political issues.

He says of himself and his work:

“Southern Arizona is one of those spaces, a strange territory that is neither here nor there, and where some people are allowed and others are not. These are the issues I find to be the most important of our present time. Beyond my own lucubrations on how I think the world should be, I’m more caught up in how the world is. By acknowledging this current state, we can possibly transcend ourselves. In other words, the first step is admitting you have a problem.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson (265 S. Church Ave., 520-624-5019) is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, admission is $8. You can use the Legislate Crazy Photo Booth from 3 to 5 p.m. Fridays through March 30.

A lifelong goal of many artists is to blanket the world with their creations. While many of us have gotten a leg up on this endeavor by painting rocks, designing art for our cars or even creating the occasional mural on the side of building (with owner permission, of course), most of us don’t have the cash to blanket larger things like Times Square billboards.

But who needs Times Square billboards when we got the Tucson Weekly Art Box Project.

Now in its second go-around, the Tucson Weekly Art Box Project consists of transforming the plain red, metal newspaper boxes into veritable works of art. Artists are allowed to use any medium they wish to create any design they wish, although we were duly warned that boxes that end up with nudity or profanity will get stuck in a “less desirable” location.

“Is that a Tucson Weekly newspaper box in those weeds behind the saguaro?”

No, seriously. Paul McCartney performed twice on the Grammys last night and the youth of this world have no idea who he is and posted so on Twitter last night, causing "who is Paul McCartney" to be a trending topic.

But this really was a thing that happened — you can check out Buzzfeed for proof.

Interestingly enough, "Who is Paul McCartney" is still trending, only now it's among a group of people who no longer want to share a world with those unaware of who Sir Paul is.

Necessary Targets, presented by UA’s Arizona Repertory Theatre opens tonight. The play is directed by Kevin Black and written by feminist author Eve Ensler, known for her play The Vagina Monologues.

From a press release:

Two American women in war-torn Bosnia — one, a New York City psychiatrist, and the other, a journalist who routinely embeds herself in war and trauma — attempt to help a group of female refugees during the immediate aftermath of the Yugoslavian Civil War. Based on playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with Bosnian women, this psychological drama protests war and violence against women. Haunting, empowering and unflinching, Necessary Targets explores the passion, pain, humor, and the humanity alive within war’s most undeserving victims.

When: Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m., showtimes continue through Feb. 26

Where:
Tornabene Theatre on the UA campus
