Be-Bop has come to town!!
By Mary Yohem, special to the Tucson Weekly
Elvis is making a comeback performance in Tucson! Well, not the real Elvis or some lame impersonator, but his legendary music, for sure!
Catalina Foothills Community Schools presents the 1950s style musical production All Shook Up this week based on the King of Rock 'n' Roll’s massive library of hit songs.
Directed by Terry Erbe, the high school’s theater teacher, the play is about a roustabout stranger named Chad who rolls into a small Midwestern town. He introduces rock 'n' roll to the ultra-conservative townspeople who go out of their way to protect young people from bad outside influences.
Within hours, Chad uses music to change the town’s attitudes towards life outside of their little world.
Starring in the lead role is Kellen Avender, a Foothills senior, as Chad. The female leads are Savannah Runge and Victoria Snapp, who alternate nights as Natalie Haller. Savannah is an eighth-grader at Esperero Canyon Middle School and Victoria will be a freshman at Foothills.
The Community Schools summer theater program is open to students in sixth through 12th grades citywide. Students pay a fee to learn how to perform a professionally written and produced script in three weeks. Young adults can also participate in backstage production, such as lighting, set building, and sound production. This technical part of the show is directed by Norm Testa and Clint Bryson.
All Shook Up features a small live band led by Khris Dodge, who serves as musical director. Erbe’s assistant directors are former summer musical performers Alex Moulton, Michael Vo and Josh Waterman.
The show opens Friday, June 24, at 7 p.m. in the Catalina Foothills High School Little Theatre, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. The show closes Wednesday June 29. Tickets are $10.
Mary Yohem is a junior at Catalina Foothills High School and will play the role of Mayor Matilda Hyde in All Shook Up.
