Look, ever since the Festival en el Barrio Viejo last weekend, I have been unable to get Sergio Mendoza y la Orkesta's mambo version of "Lupita," sung by Salvador Duran, out of my mind. I didn't bother to get the performance on video, because how could I do that and dance at the same time? (Although I learned a great lesson last weekend: Don't use the speakers by the stage for a tripod. Just don't).

I doubt that when Salvador Duran shows up at his art opening (yes, the man paints!) at MAST on Friday (tomorrow), April 9, 7 p.m. at 299 S. Park Ave., that he's bringing Sergio with him to do "Lupita." I'll listen to anything he sings or stomps on, so I'm going to go. He's expected to perform with some special guests, and I want to see more of this other side of him as a painter.

Also, since my Facebook campaign to get Mr. Duran to adopt me has pretty much failed, I guess I could buy some of his art—and so can you.

STREETER, SILVERSMITH, TUCSON
  • ALLISON MULLALLY
  • Alex Streeter, artist and jeweler and his dog, hang out in the garden of his museum and gift shop. Streeter, a New York native, finds his muse in Tucson.

Alex Streeter pours hot water into a plastic coffee filter as he pinpoints the origin of his fascination with the west. Jacob, Streeter's tiny dog, trots about in a tattered knit sweater. The museum is an odd mix of media: Photoshop art featuring the ghosts of Hotel Congress, towering cases filled with Streeter's most prized trinkets, and Yaqui masks alongside painted angels. When Streeter opens the refrigerator and asks if a visiting reporter wants a spot of milk in my coffee, I realize this isn't just a museum—this is also where he lives.
