Michelangelo Ristorante Italiano will be donating the proceeds from all desserts sold in October to the the Southern Arizona chapter of breast-cancer-awareness group Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. For more information on what that entails - which, put succinctly, is saving a whole lot of lives - you can click here.

Every once in a while I just stop and stand in awe of how much good restaurants do for this community. It seems every month brings news that some eatery is going about helping the less-fortunate with a fundraiser, and I salute this city's great restaurants for it.

There's more on Michelangelo Ristorante Italiano over here.

This just looks like fun, and mildly more cathartic than my side-of-the-knife-blade technique. My wife wouldn't be thrilled with the soiling of two bowls, but so be it.

From the opening of a new outlet of the Alabama and Florida chain Lime Fresh Mexican Grill in Winter Park, Florida.

I laughed when I read this, but then the sadness set in.

IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE OUR STATE IS RUN BY RACISTS.

Sigh.

V Fine Thai Dining, the newish downtown restaurant by the owner of Vila Thai, has added lunch hours.

If I was a businessman trying to impress a client, I would take them to V Fine Thai Dining for lunch. The place is immaculately decorated, yet comfortable. There's a killer wine list and a swanky courtyard. Long story short, it's just a great dining experience that's maybe just a tad nicer than your average lunch spot.

But I am not a businessman trying to impress anyone, and I still want to go to V Fine Thai Dining for lunch today. But that's because I can't stop thinking about the restaurant's mussels in fragrant curried coconut milk. Things like that are hard to forget.

Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There's a bit more about the restaurant over here.

In Michigan they have a program that makes food stamps worth double at farmers' markets. That's a great idea.

I'm starting to think that local agriculture and things like farmers' markets are the only hope we have against the obesity epidemic - oh, and believe you me it is truly an epidemic. Right now, more than 53 percent of the poor kids in Pima County are obese, and something like a quarter of the state's population is also obese. That, my friends, is what we call an epidemic.

Science has not been able to solve this problem, so I say we give the farmers a whack at it. We should make food stamps in Arizona worth double at farmers markets. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to try to get down off this soap box without busting my ass.

Prayerfully Popped opened at the Benedictine Monastery last weekend. Let it be known that I am a full supporter of nun-produced popcorn, and that I absolutely love this new business.

From where does my love for this new popcorn outfit spring? From their slogan - Corn From the Cloister! - and the pictures of the nuns making the popcorn on the Prayerfully Popped website, which make me feel happy and good every time I see them.

There are some pretty great popcorn flavors, too, like Abba Anthony’s Cheddar Chipotle and Cloister Cinnamon Hot Chocolate. They also do a rocky-road version that comes with marshmallows and drizzles of chocolate.

Like gambling and meat? Then the new P.Y. Steakhouse is for you. It's going to be located at Casino Del Sol and they've already started hiring sommeliers and other staff, so the opening shouldn't be too far off.

There's more information on the restaurant here, and a bio on the chef who will be running it here.

The list of food vendors for Tucson Meet Yourself is now online, so before the chaos hits downtown and you're trying to figure out what to eat for the six meals you'll end up eating at the festival during a four hour period, make some notes. Plan ahead.

Pro tip: one of the Laotian places was a real revelation for me last year. Super cheap and crazy delicious.

The full list is below the cut:

Todd and Sherry Martin of the Tucson Tamale Company have started serving breakfast on Sundays. This came as such a shock that I thought Tucson Weekly boss man Jimmy Boegle had been misinformed when he told me he'd caught wind of pancakes on the grill at the shop at 2545 E. Broadway Blvd.

It turns out the pancakes are masa cakes, and they're used to make an incredibly delicious looking version of huevos rancheros that comes with grilled green onions. Breakfast tamales and tamales-and-eggs are also available.

More on all of this here and here.

You have to give it to a woman who loves Oktoberfest so much that she starts celebrating it in September.

Such is the case with Sabine Blaese, owner of Café Passe at 415 N. Fourth Ave. Her Oktoberfest celebration kicked off last week and continues through Sunday, Oct. 2. She was born in Germany, so she’s allowed to do such things.

The celebration takes place Saturdays and Sundays and the café will be offering special dishes like bratwurst with German potato salad, weisswurst with pretzels and zwiebelkuchen, which is a sweet onion pie. Oktoberfest beer will also be on tap, and a polka band called The Bouncing Czechs performs on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The paperwork announcing the event doesn’t say anything about wearing lederhosen, but I’ll be you’ll get a few hi-fives if you do. There’s more information about the café over here.
