Montana Avenue at 6390 E. Grant Road is closing, and another Zinburger will be opening there. This is all expected to happen in mid-August, when Montana Avenue closes for a week while workers do the old swaparoo.

Tucson is fast becoming one burger-laden city. Recent years have brought two Monkey Burger spots, the gigantic Lindy’s at Redline Sports Grill, multiple In-N-Out locations, Carvel’s and several Five Guys Burgers and Fries spots. Eat-a-Burger, a downtown food truck, is also opening a restaurant right across from the main library downtown.

But, hey, burgers are good, so bring it on.

Both restaurants are owned by Fox Restaurant Concepts, which also owns and operates North, Blanco Tacos and Tequila, Wildflower, Sauce and some other restaurants up in the big city up north.

Zinburger has made an especially good run of it lately, though, even opening a location out on the East Coast.

The results are in, and Ryan Clark of the restaurant at Lodge on the Desert will compete against Steven Schultz of Red Sky inside Luna Bella at this year’s Iron Chef Tucson competition.

Chef Schultz has cooked his way around the world — Paris, Switzerland and Australia — and he's held positions locally at the Ventana Room and other spots before opening Luna Bella and Red Sky.

Clark is a two-time champion of the Iron Chef competition at the annual Tucson Meet Yourself event, and he’ll be competing in this year’s Copper Chef Challenge and BBQ at this year’s Tucson Culinary Festival in October.

There’s more information about the competition — which includes a weekend of culinary-themed activities — here.

When Eclectic Pizza at 7065 E. Tanque Verde Road first opened in 2005, owners Renee and Steve Kreager made a commitment to use as many healthy and organic ingredients as possible.

They kept at it, adding more and more free-range and organic items as the years ticked by, and have now taken it to the level where they’ve renamed the restaurant Renee’s Organic Oven.

The menu and restaurant may look a little different — both have been redesigned in recent months — but the food is essentially the same, Renee Kreager said today.

She also said the restaurant will continue to offer many gluten-free options, which have become quite popular since they were first introduced several years ago.

There's more over yonder.

El Güero Canelo's new eastside location at 5802 E. 22nd St. opened this weekend. Check out some pictures from the opening over here.

This is the third location for the restaurant, and co-owner and operator Daniel Contreras has said in the past that he hopes to open restaurants elsewhere in the state, or even in other states.

There's a bit more about the new location over here.

I cook hot dogs now and then, even for my children, and I can't say that it ever occurred to me that the resulting food item wasn't quite enough fun or human-shaped. I guess that's why I'm not a famous inventor.

Cardboard Shell has nearly every record on the Lindy's wall and might be the only was the first person to beat the Something Sweet challenge, but could she defeat the Boca Challenge, one of each of their (quite large) tacos and a massive stuffed baked potato?

I am sad to report that the age old crockpot at the Buffet Bar and Crockpot has been replaced with a high-tech soup pot thing-a-ma-whatever. I understand that the crockpot — which lengthened more nights of drinking than pixels can accurately describe — was fit for retirement, but it will be missed.

The hot dogs, however, are still served on a coffee filter and delivered with the best condiment rack ever known by man or beast. I like it best when daytime bartender Peggy slams both hot dog and condiment rack down in front of me without ceremony before heading off to keep the rest of the crowd awash in tap Coors.

In other news, the Buffet no longer has coasters with the names of the bartenders on them, and the artwork has changed. It’s still rough-and-tumble, a little smelly and shady and all sorts of other wonderful things, but maybe just a little less so than in the past.

Local farmers’-market organizer Ed Dubis has started two new markets.

A new farmers’ market opened last Tuesday at Ventana Plaza, on the corner of Sunrise Drive and Kolb Road, says Dubis. Vendors there sell organic produce, prepared foods, beauty products and crafts from 2 to 7 p.m., every Tuesday.

Dubis has also established a market at the Voyager RV Resort at the intersection of Kolb Road and Interstate 10. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays.

Dubis says he's also looking for vendors. Call 603-8116 for more information.

I wouldn't mess with a guy whos in cahoots with the bees.
  • I wouldn't mess with a guy who's in cahoots with the bees.

This honey seller on the corner of Silverbell and Ruthrauff roads keeps getting hassled by cops and deputies. He’s not taking it lying down, though, and was out there talking about how America was founded on small businesses like honey dealers, and how he once bought a semi-truck full of watermelons and sold the whole load, melon by melon, for a sweet profit.

So if any cops or deputies read this, leave Bill the Honey Man alone! He just wants to sweeten our tea a little, that’s all. Is that so wrong?

We finally made it over to the newish New York Pizza Department for a slice this week. The pizzeria at 1521 N. Wilmot Road did not disappoint, and it’s currently running a special where you can get a soda and a slice for $3.

The menu is all subs, pizzas, Paninis, calzones and a few desserts. The air is heavy with garlic and tomato. The staff is very friendly and will stop hand-tossing crusts to help you. There are a dozen or so tables to sit at, and you get your own soda from the fountain.

The place also gets bonus points for its rather clever slogan, “To Perfect and Serve Pizza.” I’ll bet Tucson’s police officers friggin’ love this place.

Delivery is available for orders of at least $20. Call 207-7667 for more information.
