If you’re not busy this afternoon, consider checking out the open house and juice-tasting mentioned in this week’s Noshing Around column. It takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Main Squeeze, a new organic juice-and-smoothie bar at Marketplace at Acacia (4340 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 107).
It should be mentioned that this is not your average juice-and-smoothie stand. Chef Albert Hall, who owns the market with his wife, Lila Yamashiro, brought in all sorts of rare ingredients. For instance: The drink called “The Flirt” contains a Peruvian root that's supposed to work as an aphrodisiac.
Check out the juice bar’s Facebook page for more information.
The wait is almost over! Ryan Field of May’s Counter Chicken and Waffles tells us the restaurant opens at 11 a.m., tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Want a peek at what’s on the menu? Check out the restaurant’s Facebook page for photos of the chicken-fried steak, “tot-chos” and bacon-wrapped peppers served at the soft opening over the weekend.
May’s Counter Chicken and Waffles is located at 2945 E. Speedway Blvd.
We’ve been hearing good things about a local food truck called Planet of the Crepes. There are reports of fillings ranging from smoked duck to Nutella, with many sweet and savory stops in between.
Planet of the Crepes will be parked up on Mount Lemmon every Thursday through Sunday through the end of October, according to its Facebook page.
Oh, and the place is open today (Labor Day), according to its Twitter account:
Okay everyone. It's labor day and I'll be laboring at the top of Mount Lemmon. C'mon up and enjoy the weather. With a crepe of course.
Anyone tried these crepes yet? We’re dying to know more!

We let you know about Don Pedro's Peruvian Bistro yesterday, and found their website today. Looks like Tucson could be in for a treat.
It looks like a new eatery called Don Pedro's Peruvian Bistro is setting up shop in the Southgate Shopping Center, on the southwest corner of Sixth Avenue and I-10.
If you haven't tried Peruvian food yet, Candela and Inca's can help. The chicha morada at both places is out of sight.
The new Peruvian bistro is still under construction. We'll let you know when we learn more.
Metropolitan Grill (7892 N. Oracle Road) reopens this weekend with a slightly different name, a revamped menu and an overhauled interior featuring work by several local artists.
Gone are the white walls at what is now Metropolitan Grill: America’s Kitchen. Art by Joe Pagac, the man responsible for those incredible murals on the side of the Rialto Theatre, line the walls, which have been repainted with rich hues. A huge American-flag mural made out of broken dishes takes up another wall. The front door features art by Johnny Vegas of Hi Speed Custom Car Shop.
On the menu: Burgers, wood-fired pizzas, seafood, spring lamb, Angus beef and all sorts of other items, including favorites from the old Metropolitan Grill menu. There are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, too, and happy hour all day, every day, with $4 glasses of wine and mixed drinks, and beers starting at $2.25. Live music takes place in the bar at 7 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Check out some pictures of the new décor after the jump:
Mini’s Cupcakes is open for business at its new location at Casas Adobes Plaza (7051 N. Oracle Road.) The new location also sells cakes made by owner Jaynie Rossi's other outfit, Ambrosia of Tucson.
Here's the press release:
Tucson, Arizona — August 24, 2010 — More delectable news on the cake front: Mini’s Cupcakes moved to a new location at 7051 North Oracle Road in the Casas Adobes Plaza, where owner Jaynie Rossi continues to serve her sweetest treats. Jaynie, also proud owner of Ambrosia Cakes, is excited to announce they will be selling her exquisite, hip and artful cakes at the new Mini’s location as well.
Wine-industry magazine Wines and Vines has a roundup of how Callaghan Vineyards, Canelo Hills Vineyard and Kief-Joshua Vineyard are dealing with the damage caused by last week’s hailstorm:
Elgin, Ariz. — A freak hailstorm stripped ripening grapes and foliage from winegrape vines in this high-elevation viticultural center south of Tucson last weekend. Growers in the affected area are struggling to salvage even a fraction of their 2010 vintage, already squeezed by an untimely freeze April 30.

Yet the recall is having various effects on the Buckeye, Ariz., company.
There’s this report that several cities are turning to the company for a supply of untainted eggs. Then there’s this report that the recall could still cause company officials serious indigestion, albeit far less than what salmonella enteritidis is capable of.
The recall has not officially affected Arizona, but there are reports that health department officials are pulling eggs before they reach grocery stores.
All we have to say is that mega-farming like what takes place at the farms that produced the eggs related to the recall is gross and often inhumane. There aren’t many places to get local eggs in Tucson, other than Hickman’s, but if you’ve ever considered buying more local food, this might be a good time to start.
Before we get into the nitty gritty of what's going on at the newish Salud Oyster Bar and Grill at 1825 W. Valencia Road, we have to tell you specifically about the oyster bar that should be up and running before long.
Manager Jesus Bonilla Jr. says the eatery is dedicating a portion of its sizeable bar to the shucking and serving of fresh oysters. "You'll be able to come in and sit down, and they'll pull the oysters right out of the ice and shuck them for you right there," he said. "Eventually, we'll carry four or five kinds of oysters from all over the world."
The restaurant also serves scallops, calamari, crab legs and other sea food. Mexican food and American classics such as ribs, burgers and steaks are also available.
Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday; and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday through Sunday. Happy hour - which features 25 percent off appetizers - takes place from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.
