You might remember our controversial V Modern Thai announcement in May. They denied the closure, but they finally announced the news on their Facebook page.

Straight from the horse's mouth:

“Sometimes it takes a wrong turn to get you to the right place.” - Unknown
With a heavy heart we regret to announce that V Modern Thai is permanently closed. We would like to thank our loyal customers, friends and family for a great 9 years! Your support will never be forgotten! Here's to new adventures! Happy summer everyone!
Respectfully,

We are still waiting for a phone call or email back, but I'm glad they reached out to the Daily to confirm the news we published multiple times.

Despite the theatrics, we wish all the folks at V Modern Thai a bright and prosperous future.

If you don't have a donut near your mouth then you're doing Friday all wrong. Today is National Donut day, so here are some shops I think you should visit in honor of this savory holiday. This list is not in any particular order, so don't kill me.

Le Cave's Bakery: This South Tucson bakery has been a guilty pleasure of mine since I was old enough to swallow. If you're not a fan of their donuts, try their delicious empanadas because everyday is empanada day. Le Cave's is open until 5 p.m. and they're located at 1219 S. Sixth Ave.

La Estrella Bakery: La Estrella specializes everything from wedding cakes to tortillas. The bakery has been highlighted by Forbes, so I guess that's worth something. There are two locations: The 120 S. Avenida del Convento location is open until 6 p.m. The original bakery is open until 7 p.m., and it's located at 5266 S. 12th Ave.

Sad news in the local Mexican restaurant world, the Guadalajara Original Grill located at 1220 E. Prince Road will be closed indefinitely due to a small fire in its storage room on Thursday morning. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation, according to the press release. Guadalajara Original Grill originally opened in 2002, and has won Best of Tucson's guacamole every year the award was mentioned since 2009.

From Facebook:
We regret to inform you that our restaurant sustained a small fire this morning. We will be closed for an undetermined time. We are diligently working to restore the restaurant and will be reopening bigger and better than ever soon. More details to follow soon. Thank you, Tucson, for your patience and support.

Last night Food Network's - Food Court Wars, featured some hometown food truck folks. Tucson's own, Costa Rican food truck, Kadooks, took on Sierra Vista's, Asian fusion - food truck, J's Kitchens, to earn a year rent free spot in the food court in Sierra Vista's mall.

I am a food freak, so I get all fan boy when I see Tucson (and surrounding areas not including Phoenix) in the national spotlight. This episode was a lot of fun to watch. Kadooks brought their Caribbean flair complete with Costa Rican coleslaw and won the concept portion of the show. The prize for the first battle of the food court war, was getting some one on one time with Tod Graves, multi-millionaire entrepreneur, founder and owner of Raising Canes Restaurant.

The two brick and mortar hopefuls then went on to a marketing event at Fort Huachuca, where, in my opinion, Kadooks also brought the better dish, (there are no "winners" declared in the second leg of the show, just get people to show up) with their Gallo Pinto and Cilantro/Citrus Chicken pitted against J's Kitchen's pork lumpia (which for whatever reason they continued to call a spring roll, if it is Filipino, and fried, it LUMPIA!).

The Tucson restaurant hopes and dreams destruction rampage continues.

The Range
received an email from the corporate How Do You Roll? offices notifying us that the Austin based restaurant will shut down this week.

“We want to thank the Tucson community and we hope to be back very soon,” CEO Yuen Yung stated in the press release.

The Subway of sushi cuisine was located at 914 E. Speedway Blvd. How Do You Roll? moved to the Old Pueblo two years ago, and was featured on ABC's reality show Shark Tank

According to the restaurant, Tuesday is How Do You Roll?'s last business day in Tucson.

Fear not, the Phoenix location isn't going anywhere.

Watch out Zany Beaver, a new restaurant specializing in poutine is coming to Fourth Avenue.

The Range discovered a new restaurant that may be opening in August called US Fries. The slogan on the website reads in red, white and blue: "It's Not Poutine, It's a Meal!"

The majority restaurant owner Thomas E. Jones told The Range he plans on opening the first of 15 restaurants in Tucson. Jones said within three to seven months he plans to open two locations in Austin. "I have always wanted to start a national brand," he said.

US Fries will be open as late as 3 a.m. The poutine fast food joint will be located at 340 North Fourth Avenue. Jones said the Canadian based restaurant will cater to a "college demographic." There will be up to 25 seats in the facility. The menu on the website is subject to change, but there will be 10 regular options and one monthly special.

Jones said he plans on moving from his home in Calgary Alberta, Canada to the Old Pueblo within 60 days. Lani Buchanan, chief and an executive of the company, will also make the move as well. Buchanan started Fries & Dolls food truck. The hot pink food truck serves gluten-free gourmet French fries and smokies. Buchanan and the truck have been featured on Eat St. and The Great Food Truck Race.
