From the Weekly's own Rita Connelly via her Facebook:
Just got an email saying that on March 31st, the 17th Street Farmers's Market is closing. I didn't shop there as often as I should have, but this is sad news. You could always find great international choices there and usually more than one option of whatever you were looking for. They've been there for 20 years! I guess the parent company has to spend more time with their other entities as they are doing well.
What a shame.
We were able to get a copy of the email sent out to the market's newsletter subscribers, and it included this note from Tucson Food Service President and CEO Tom Kusian:
“It has been our pleasure, and our honor, to serve our grocery customers in Tucson for the past 20 years...Our loyal customers have enjoyed our eclectic, sometimes exotic, often surprising inventory, and local music and entertainment features over the years, and we want to sincerely thank them for their patronage."
What a shame! 17th Street Market was one of the places I actually saw whole fish for the first time. Another local business gone, leaving a vacancy in town and a hole in my heart.
One more thing: The newsletter also notes that all dry grocery goods will be marked down 20% until everything is gone, effective immediately.

If you've got food allergies (or even if you're just dedicated to healthy eating), celebrations like Valentine's Day can be tricky. But a local restaurant is making sure those sensitive types can still got out for a romantic dinner out on Feb. 14.
Renee’s Organic Oven, 7065 E Tanque Verde Road, has created a special meal of gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and/or vegan options to conform to a wide spectrum of dining restrictions. Here is the menu Renee sent me:

Tucson Weekly's Facebook fans are now embroiled in a heated debate over the best place to get a burger this weekend. The top contenders, as of 1 p.m., appear to be Lindy's on Fourth, Monkey Burger and Zinburger. Whaddaya think?

The food truck scene here in Tucson rivals those of much bigger cities, and is hardly limited to the common (albeit delicious) border fare you see scattered about every street corner. David Aguirre’s Tucson Food Truck Roundup gathers the area’s most venerated mobile restaurants in a congregation of flavors you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere, making a tastebud trip around the world as simple as hopping from truck to truck.

While flavors of the month come and go, the Eegee's frozen fruit drink has largely stayed the same over the restaurant's history. Nearly every version of the classic Tucson beverage has the same ingredients: sugar, water and, usually, natural fruit juices (generally, orange, FYI). However, while these drinks are quite delicious, the amount of sugar involved between the fruit and the actual sugar is not insignificant (35 grams in a 12 ounce drink, 130 calories).
So, the idea of a sugar-free Eegee's is sort of a welcome one. Sweetened with Truvia, the Skinny-Berry Strawberry Eegee's (which isn't a zero calorie option, after all, there's still fruit and fruit juice involved) is still in the testing phase at the moment and not for sale, but when web producer David Mendez and I tried samples earlier this week at the 3250 E. Valencia location, we were generally happy with the results. The regular strawberry is actually a bit too sweet for my tastes (I'm solidly in the lemon camp), so the less-cloying version worked for me. I thought the texture of the sample was a bit more grainy and snow-coneish than usual, but who knows, that could have been due to other factors. As someone who should probably endeavor to ingest as few calories as possible, if my beloved lemon is offered in this format, I'd probably make the switch.

More than 100 of Tucson Weekly's discerning Facebook fans have weighed in on one of Tucson's most vital questions: Where's the best place to have Sunday breakfast?
You can check out their thoughts here—and feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments below.
The Range is thinking about heading downtown to Cafe a la C'Art. How about that Arizona omelet? Anita Street Market chorizo, pepperjack cheese, roasted red peppers and caramelized onions—locally sourced, mighty tasty. And it's the first Sunday of the month, so admission to the adjoining Tucson Museum of Art is free.

Following up on yesterday's Fudgie the Whale quest, a different representative of the Carvel corporation swooped in today to crush my dreams. If I'm not willing to drive to Mesa (AND I'M NOT), there will be no Fudgie Fridays here at the Weekly.
Hi Dan,I wanted to write in regards to your post on Tuesday January 29th, and let you know that Fudgie the Whale is not available through grocery stores. Nick was under the impression this was the case and sadly it is not. None of our signature cakes are available through grocery stores as they are exclusive to our shoppes.
I know that Nick had stated this was the case, and I am truly sorry for any confusion and disappointment this has caused....
Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I will assist you in any way I can.
Thanks,
Melissa A. Smith
