I know that we at the Weekly tend to be as honest as possible when it comes to restaurant reviews, resulting in occasional hurt feelings from some folks, but man, the New York Times' Pete Wells completely brutalized the Times Square restaurant of celebrity chef/television host/hedgehog-lookalike Guy Fieri, Guy's American Kitchen & Bar.
An excerpt from the Times review, which takes the form of a "do you understand what is going on here?" series of questions addressed to Fieri:
What is going on at this new restaurant of yours, really?Has anyone ever told you that your high-wattage passion for no-collar American food makes you television’s answer to Calvin Trillin, if Mr. Trillin bleached his hair, drove a Camaro and drank Boozy Creamsicles? When you cruise around the country for your show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” rasping out slangy odes to the unfancy places where Americans like to get down and greasy, do you really mean it?
Or is it all an act? Is that why the kind of cooking you celebrate on television is treated with so little respect at Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar?
Read more, as well as some stunningly positive customer reviews, after the jump.

If you follow Wilko on Facebook, you may have heard the news already: they're fully launching their new weekend brunch menu, starting tomorrow after what we can assume was a successful soft launch last weekend.
The brunch menu is said to have 15 new entrees, priced between 9 and 20 dollars, along with 15 new cocktails, which will range in price from 4 to 12 dollars.
The menu isn't available for viewing at Wilko's website yet, but from a manager I spoke with, they hope to have it available online soon.

The La Mesa Tortillas location at 2112 W. Grant Road, which has been turning out killer tortillas and a small menu of lunch items for about three years, is closed.
The sign in the window says the other La Mesa Tortillas location, at 7131 E. Broadway Blvd., remains open. The store's website says the third location at 3923 E. Pima St. also remains open.
And, in keeping with the everlasting ebb and flow of restaurant openings and closings, a location of everybody's favorite take-and-bake pizza joint, Papa Murphy's, is setting up right next to the now vacated La Mesa Tortillas space. So there's that.

Why yes, we at Weekly World Central are indeed jazzed about the opportunity to wander the streets of Tucson, tasting some of the city's best coffee.
Tomorrow, Nov. 10, coffee shops from Downtown Tucson to the University area out to the Campbell Ave. corridor are going to be opening their doors to caffeine fans, offering tastings, cuppings, lectures and workshops, as well as discounts on whole bean coffee.
Shops and roasters that have committed to the Coffee Crawl include Caffe Luce, Raging Sage, eXo Roast Co. (which Adam Borowitz recently raved about), Cartel Coffee Lab, Sparkroot and Brewd, who will be hosting Adventure Coffee Roasting. 47 Scott will also be joining in, featuring Yellow Brick Coffee.
Events look to be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are mostly free (though the Coffee Crawl website warns that cuppings are set to cost a dollar, so it might help to have cash on hand.
For more info, head to either the Tucson Coffee Crawl website or Facebook page.

If you've noticed an eerie blue light shining out of a space at 1122 E. Sixth Street, that would be the new NRG Blends smoothie/sports drink shop. The concept: Smoothies that enrich your system with supplements and mega-vitamin therapy to bring about superior performance in academics and sport.
There's more on the shop right here. If you look at the supplements section of the shop's website you might notice you can browse by intended medicinal effect or manufacturer of said supplement. This is the stuff gym bunnies dream of.

With most of the political season behind us we now turn to more important matters: Filling our bellies with beer and food.
What luck! Loews Ventana Canyon Resort is planning a beer-paired dinner featuring a striking assortment of barbecue-inspired things like grilled-duck pizza made with aged Gouda and habanero barbecue-spiced marmalade, steak, smoked pig cheeks and more. Each of the four courses will be paired with beers by Tucson's own Dragoon Brewing Co., which is fast becoming one of the most talked about breweries in town.
The format of the dinner will be akin to a cooking demonstration as well, offering a more interactive experience.
“Guests rarely get to interact with the chef who prepares their food or the vintner or brewmaster who makes their drink, and vice versa, so this is a really fun way to break down that barrier, educate our guests a bit, have some laughs and share some great food,” said Executive Chef Ken Harvey via a press release. “After all, there’s no better way to connect with people than over great barbeque and great beer.”
The entrees will also feature herbs grown on the grounds of the resort at 7000 N. Resort Drive.
The dinner takes place on Friday, Nov. 16, and costs $50 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 615-5496.

Beyond Bread’s team of Shelby Collier, Matt Boling and Mike Schehl placed second in the Saturday night sandwich competition at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.Beyond Bread placed in the top ten with the Everything Reuben, which is made on a fresh baked pretzel roll with corned beef, Swiss cheese, vinegar slaw and house made Russian dressing.
Our second round winner was a spontaneous creation consisting of honey smoked ham and Swiss cheese smeared with a sweet onion, apple and Dijon jam, on a country rye bread in a Monte Cristo style.
Beyond Bread features the Everything Reuben on Saturdays at all three of our locations.
Oh, and this:
We saw your post today regarding Beyond Bread competing at the World Food Championships and wanted to send you some information and a huge thank you for your support. If it wasn't for the Tucson Weekly, we would have never know we were even nominated, again many thanks!
Shucks, you're welcome.
