A new restaurant and catering company has moved into the building at 3073 N. Campbell Ave., where the Just Add Water Café was going to be located until the owner pulled the plug on the project.

Amelia Grey's Café and Catering now resides there. The restaurant is the new incarnation of Amelia Greys' Tea Garden, which pulled up stakes earlier this year at 5055 E. Speedway Blvd.

Expect sandwiches, salads, baked goods galore and all the requisite hot and cold beverages. The café also holds high teas, describing them as such:

High Tea is served on our finest bone china which includes: Pot of your choice of tea, milk and sugar cubes, Three petite sandwiches, Two freshly baked scones, Three miniature sweets, One mini quiche and condiments of homemade lemon curd Raspberry Jam and devonshire cream.

The next high tea takes place this Sunday, July 22. Reservations are required. There's more on the restaurant here.

There's nothing wrong with Yelp in theory - it's a good place to test the waters a bit regarding places you've never been - but sometimes the site's loyalists can get out of control, assuming that the world of food service revolves around their assessments. I've heard stories locally of Yelpers threatening restaurant owners that they'll write a nasty review online if they don't get some sort of special treatment, which probably doesn't happen often, but still is a symptom of a userbase that overestimates its influence.

However, it turns out that Yelp might be more of a hivemind than anything else, since only a small percentage of restaurant decisions are made because of online information and only a fraction of those are influenced by review sites:

But at this point, online marketing influences only 6 percent of restaurant choices, the survey found. That’s for all types of online marketing.

On the one hand, that’s a small piece of the overall dining-out pie. On the other hand, that 6 percent translates into 926 million restaurant visits. That’s a lot of restaurant seats filled from online marketing efforts.

Within this relatively small realm of online-marketing influence, what gets diners excited and into the car to go eat out? The top decider: Good old-fashioned deals and special offers, which drove more than one-third of the decisions on where to eat out, NPD found....

What happened with online reviews and recommendations? They turn up a distant fourth, influencing only 14 percent of diners who saw online marketing campaigns, nearly tied with simple information on a restaurant’s location, which helped 13 percent of diners decide where to go.

Looks like the old Café Terra Cotta building at 3500 E. Sunrise Drive is getting a new tenant.

A liquor license application for the joint has been filed with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control under the name Five Palms Steak and Seafood.

That's all we've got for the moment, but we'll be back with more once we get in touch with the owners.

A new restaurant called Tapas Fusion is setting up on the north end of the Albertson's shopping center at 2970 N. Campbell Ave., where Elle Wine Bistro used to be. We hear it will serve tapas and food from around the world with an emphasis on infusing those dishes with South American flavors. That sounds awesome.

From an e-mail received this morning:

Tapas Fusion is owned by Chef Violeta Rodriguez and General Manager, Mary Bellin. The two friends began planning this restaurant over a year ago and seriously looked at 9 places before deciding on the location at 2970 N Campbell Ave. We signed the lease in May 2012 and have been cleaning and ordering supplies ever since. Luckily, the restaurant was fully equipped and we have only had to add the rotisserie for our featured menu item, Peruvian Chicken or Pollo al Spiedo. It has a crispy skin and infusion of flavors that make the meat juicy. The menu will be completed and available on our new website Tapasfusiontucson.com. The website is under construction for the next day or two.

The original signs for Elle Wine Bistro are still on the road and building. The signs will be removed and replaced with our logo ASAP. Just a note, we are not taking over Elle nor have anything to do with the former restaurant. We have leased the space and equipment from the property management company.

The hip little coffee bar and restaurant Sparkroot at 245 E. Congress St. is doing its part to combat the summer heat with its new line of homemade ice-pops. Sparkroot employee Julie Asis dropped us an e-mail last week with a description of the unique frozen treats:

I put them on the menu because they fit well with our gourmet take on childhood favorites - grilled cheese sandwiches and pb&js. Also, what's better than a tasty, refreshing popsicle in the middle of summer in tucson? Our kitchen team has fun taking turns inventing flavors. We like our treats unique and not too sweet, flavors that you can't get anywhere else in town like blackberry beet, strawberry basil lemonade, and banana chocolate peanut butter.

Nice. There's more on Sparkroot here.

Noble Hops Gastropub is such an ambitious and interesting restaurant. It currently serves more than 175 different beers - 28 of those are available on tap - and executive chef Angel Fabian's newly revamped menu boasts a sweeping array of items ranging from shrimp satay to gourmet hamburgers.

There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free selections on the new menu, too. Take a look over here.

What used to be called the Tohono Chul Park Tearoom is now the Tohono Chul Garden Bistro and a new management team is running it. The food sounds quite good, too, especially if you're into fresh seasonal fare. From the Garden Bistro website:

Each dish is plated to look as lovely as the gardens surrounding the Bistro and the flavors are amazing, truly! We can’t wait to welcome regulars of the Tea Room and to also re-introduce patrons who haven’t visited in a while. The menu will change seasonally, and even daily, based on what local, organic fresh ingredients the chef can obtain. The management will be visible in the dining room and on the patios and look forward to getting to know our guests. The light summer fare menu offers some favorites, but there will also be great variety based on market conditions. The Garden Bistro is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning July 1st for summer hours.

The new take-out restaurant O' My Buns is open at Park Place Mall at 5870 E. Broadway Blvd. It sells affordable and slightly-sweet buns in a variety of flavors, coffee and tea. From a press release:

O’My Buns is owned and operated by James Shin, who notes that although popular in other parts of the world, including Asia, the light and tasteful bun is fairly new to the United States.

“It’s a relatively new concept and we think it will attract health-conscious consumers who are looking for something lighter than a traditional cinnamon roll or pastry,” he said. “It’s a new fresh item and I think Tucson needs something like this, particularly for consumers who are more health-savvy and want an alternative to higher fat and calorie items.”

We doubt this will loosen Cinnabon's well-earned grip on the mall-based sweet roll market, but it is nice to have options. Prices are in the $2 to $5 range.

There are details beginning to emerge about a new Tucson restaurant called Urban Belly. The place doesn't have a location yet, but the chefs and other people backing the place are beginning work on what they will be serving, describing it in an e-mail like this:

Our cuisine can be called nostalgic, elevated, comfort food. Basically we take simple dishes like mac n cheese and pb&j, deconstruct them, add more modern technique to them and present in a classy way. Its a fun approachable way to eat.

The owners are looking for a location near or in the downtown area. We'll be back with more when we learn more.

From the Zacharys Pizza Facebook page
  • From the Zachary's Pizza Facebook page

This is the saddest Tucson food news I've ever announced, but the world must know: Zachary's Pizza at 1028 E. Sixth St. is closing at the end of the month. An employee verified the closure when I called to check what I hoped was just a rumor.

I once took a man with a fatal disease to Zachary's. His illness had left him with no appetite, yet he ate almost two of the place's enormous slices. The pizza is that good. I've spent anniversaries there, made long-time friends there and consumed my body weight many times over in beer and pizza there over the years.

It's sad when just about any restaurant closes - even if the food leaves something to be desired, restaurant people work hard, long hours to feed us - but this one really stings. Thanks for all the great times Zachary's, and I'll be seeing you a lot over the next three weeks.
