You'd have to take a roadtrip to Ahwatukee to see the Sarah Palin documentary opening today in Arizona, but you might be lonely in the theater. The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf went to a movie theatre in staunchly conservative Orange County, California and found that the few people who ended up in seats for The Undefeated really wanted to see a certain wizard:
I hurried through the teenage hordes, bypassed a concession stand that sold 1,020 calories of soda for $5.25, and entered theater number 30, hoping I'd have ample time before the previews to talk to some people. But inside, the theater was empty. I sat there alone for 20 minutes, at which point an usher stuck his head in the door, gave me a quizzical smile, and said, "How come you're not watching Harry Potter?" Then he left me by myself again, and without any good answer.
It isn't strictly accurate to say that I sat through the whole movie alone. Just as the previews started, two young women walked in giggling together and took seats three rows behind me. Afraid that they'd ruined the only story I had at that point — What If Sarah Palin Starred in a Movie and No One Showed Up? — I hoped they'd at least oblige me with an interview, and so they did.
Jamie Watkins, 22, is a Missouri native, which qualifies her as a real American. She only recently moved to Southern California, and her little sister, Jessie, age 18, was visiting for the first time.
"So, um, what made you come out here tonight?"
"We're going to Disneyland tomorrow," Jamie said, "but she just got here, so we decided we should go out."
"We looked online for the latest movie playing," Jessie added. "But all the Harry Potters were sold out, and then we saw 'The Undeafeated.' We don't even actually know what we're seeing."

Colin Boyd has positive things to say about the (presumably) last installment of the Harry Potter movie saga in this week's issue and while I fully intended to watch all of the movies to prepare for today's release, I didn't really get around to it. Thankfully, Slate put together a video cheat sheet, so you, like me, can pretend you know the difference between your Hufflepuffs and Ravensclaws.

If the demise of the DeAnza drive-in theater two years ago left you reeling, now's your chance to revive it. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," the last movie the theater showed before shutting down, will play Saturday as part of a fundraiser to bring the drive-in back.
The Cactus Drive-In Theater Foundation, taking the name DeAnza used in its first three decades of operation, recovered the theater's cinemascope screen and will use it for the event.
Per a press release:
This exciting fundraising event for the Cactus Drive-in will be held on their temporary location on the Avenida Del Convento just south of the Mercado San Augustin building. (http://mercadosanagustin.com/) It is located just west of I-10 on Congress and then south on Avenida Del Covento. The suggested donations will be $10 per car or $4 per individual to help support their project. Some seating will be available for bike-ins and walk-ins but limited. Gates open at 6:30 PM and Cartoon etc.seen at 7:30 and feature at 8 PM.
Along with the feature, a historical cartoon and an intermission presentation from the past will be shown before the feature. A short video highlighting the amazing efforts volunteers have contributed to this project will also be seen. The foundation has TWO professional projectors and TWO complete sound systems donated to their project. One of these FM sound transmitters will be used at the event and broadcasted to the attendees’ radio.

Ever since the documentary King of Kong was released, the idea that the movie would be remade in some sort of fictionalized way has been floating around. Johnny Depp was rumored to want to play Donkey Kong champ/hot sauce magnate Billy Mitchell. It's not like the documentary version was wildly overexposed or anything, so the remake could take a great story and add a little bit of Hollywood to it. While most remakes are based on terrible ideas, this didn't seem so offensive.
However, director Seth Gordon moved on other projects, including Horrible Bosses which opened this weekend, so the new King of Kong moved to the backburner. However, now Gordon is saying the remake might be back, but in "mockumentary" form:
While there has been speculation about where the story may go—at one point it was rumored that it might be a sequel instead of a straight dramatization of the original film—for the style of the film, Gordon has been inspired by the hit shows he’s worked on.“There’s a few different avenues [the film can take]. I’ve done some work on ‘Modern Family’ and ‘The Office’ and have worked in this doc style, and so that inspired me to say, instead of doing a traditional narrative feature script, what if we did the remake in the doc style?,” he explained. “What doors what that open? What opportunities? What additional story could we tell? And that’s essentially the approach we took.”
Well, Seth Gordon, I'd suspect the documentary style would end up creating a movie that would nearly the SAME MOVIE YOU ALREADY MADE. If there are "a few different avenues" that you can take, it might be worth pursuing one of the avenues you haven't already been down. Just make a movie about the life of Billy Mitchell. Make a fictionalized version of what happens after the end of the documentary. Remake it as a musical. Anything but another entertainment product shot documentary-style. I think we've all had enough, right?

The Undefeated Teaser Trailer from Dain Valverde on Vimeo.
The trailer for the Sarah Palin really-long-campaign-video documentary The Undefeated has a very intense feel, with an imposing score and a series of talking heads detailing how Palin fought the establishment. For a minute, I almost forgot that she was only governor for 966 days before quitting.

Page One: Inside the New York Times, a documentary on the future of journalism from inside the belly of its biggest beast, will open at the Loft on Friday.
Here's more from the Loft website:
At the film’s heart is Times columnist David Carr, a former drug addict who is both the paper’s strongest advocate and its most irascible, charismatic iconoclast; whether publishing an exposé on the Tribune Corporation’s internal issues or giving a bratty editor a verbal slap-down, he brings a down-to-earth humanity into such overarching issues as new versus old media, corporate control and journalistic integrity. Thanks to Carr and the other news hands interviewed here, the film makes clear that whether it’s online or off, printed or downloaded, what matters—and what’s at stake—is good journalism. And amidst all the tumult and turmoil, rigorous journalism is still thriving, as evidenced by PAGE ONE's fascinating, up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-record quotes and skillful page-one pitching that brings the most venerable newspaper in America to fruition each and every day.

Seems about right, although "Will It Blend" was a lot of fun, so maybe it's worth $9.

We can't think of a better place to watch Hook than at Valley of the Moon. Think about it: A fantasyland full of fairy lights and enchanted gardens? A world of legend and lore? A place once home to "children, thousands of children, and those who were still young at heart" (via our very own Jim Nintzel)? Sounds kind of like Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, eh?
Come out to watch the movie under the stars at on Saturday, July 2. Admission is free. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.; Movie starts at 7:45 p.m. There's a $4 suggestion donation/person.
