Holy cosplayers, Batman!

Posted By on Mon, Jan 27, 2014 at 12:00 PM

The fourth annual Amazing Arizona Comic-Con was in full swing last weekend, and I had a blast. Comic con is heaven on earth. It's the only place where I feel alright with the world and everyone around me gets it.

Here's 20 photos of some highly talented cosplayers that attended ACAC:

Talking Comics hosts Bobby Acosta and Cynthia Gerriets couldn't have said enough nice things about the first issue of Marvel Now! Black Widow. Their enthusiasm is warranted because the comic was written by Nathan Edmondson and art by the extremely talented Phil Noto. Aside from the one-shots and miniseries, this is the character's first ongoing monthly series.

Check out what Acosta and Gerriets had to say about the all-new super hero spy thriller (below the break):

Arizona is home to some of the funniest people in comedy. Successful acts like Pablo Francisco, Craig Gass, Robert Schimmel, Gary Shandling and David Spade all that got their start in Tucson or somewhere in the Phoenix area. The bookers at The Stand Up Live are holding a statewide contest to find the state's funniest comedian. It's the closest thing to Last Comic Standing local comedians will ever get.

Local comedians will have to show up to Laffs Comedy Cafe on Thursday, March 6 to compete for paid gigs at the Stand Up Live, Tempe Improv and other clubs in Los Angeles and Florida.

The $25 entry fee is worth the grand prize:

1 week of work at the Tempe Improv, Stand Up Live a flight out to Florida and one week work at the Palm Beach Improv and the FTL Improv. That’s 4 weeks of work. A guest spot in LA to showcase for industry, flight and hotel, all paid!!

Doug Stanhope was in Tucson late November filming his stand-up comedy segments for the BBC's satire television show, Weekly Wipe with Charlie Brooker. Stanhope chose Plush—of all the venues in the world—to perform his material about the similarities between the U.K.'s immigration situation and what he sees going on along the border near Bisbee.

"You're right," Stanhope said during his performance at Plush. "They probably don't speak the language, and they probably have minimal education. And if that guy can show up like that, as qualified for your job as you are, then you are a fucking loser of such dynamic proportions."

I was fortunate enough to attend the show and can assure any Stanhope fans that this clip is just the tip of the iceberg. I doubt the rest of the world will ever hear his joke about how there had to be plastic jug vodka flowing in Nowhere Man Derrick Ross' blood, or I don't see the BBC fitting in his bit on how the mass shooting on Jan. 8 could have been avoided if Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords done her job effectively.

This week Jenny and Cynthia reviewed Image Comics' latest title Alex + Ada. Cynthia gives it two robo-thumbs-up, but Jenny has mixed feelings. This is the first review where the couple don't agree on something. Is there trouble in comic book paradise?

Almost two hundred Tucsonans are going to laugh their way in to the New Year. "Laughing is the cheapest form of therapy," Dobie Maxwell said in a early Sunday morning interview. Maxwell is performing two shows tonight at Laffs Comedy Cafe, 2900 East Broadway.

Maxwell, 50, was performing at Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago last New Year's Eve. "I love Tucson because the people are laid back and come to laugh. It's a lot of fun," Maxwell added, "I love coming here because there's an In-and-Out Burger, Waffle House and Wiener Schnitzel all in the same town. As a comic, you become a fast food connoisseur."

When Maxwell isn't performing comedy he's teaching standup comedy classes in Chicago. "When I started out there weren't a lot of people that helped me at all. The headliners would just want to drink or hit on the waitress, and all I wanted was just five minutes of their time," Dobie said. "Not everyone was like that, but a large percentage that could have been nice weren't."

“My grandpa told me “It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice.” It’s corny and sappy, but it means the world to me. I’ll live by that until I die.”

Maxwell promised his grandfather that he would get a civil service job before entering show business. “I kept my promise and got a civil service job for one day as a clerk typist for the Milwaukee Police department. The only thing I typed was my resignation,” the comedy lifer said. "I knew I wouldn't like it, but I had to keep my promise."

Maxwell has been working in comedy clubs since he was 20 years old. “I sat people, emceed shows and then I went on the road full time when I was 22,” the 50 year-old comedian said.

Dobie has a lot of self-deprecating material in his act. He often refers to himself as “Mr. Lucky.” “The first time I came to Tucson, it rained three out of the four days I was here. I’m always in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Mr. Lucky said. “People that know who I am come up to me and say “I had a ‘Mr. Lucky Day’ the other day.” It makes me feel so good when I hear that.”

“15 years ago my best friend robbed two banks and tried to blame it on me,” Maxwell said. “I had to wear a wire for the government and get him to confess that he did it.” Dobie finally got his childhood friend to admit the truth after seven years of surveillance. The 25 year comedy veteran is hoping to adapt this story into a novel and have it completed by the end of 2014.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed that he had a meeting with Warner Bros. during his #RockTalk Twitter conversation today. Johnson said that he's going to team up with DC Comics in 2014, but he didn't give any details. This is exciting news considering the bipolar responses regarding the Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot casting controversy that has surrounded the Man of Steel sequel.

Here are five DC roles that I think would best fit The Rock:

5. Bizarro: The Rock is a gentle giant, just like Superman, you can't fool his naivete for weakness. Johnson has wore the red cape on his first SNL appearance. I don't know if the world is ready to see Bizzaro Superman on the big screen, but he would make a comparable and refreshing new adversary for the Kryptonian.

the rock is SUPERMAN

4. Black Manta: Black Manta is one of the coolest and underrated rogues in the DC Universe. We don't know much about the character, and Johnson take this character in any direction.

Jenny and Cynthia review Image Comics' latest title PRETTY DEADLY # 1 by Kelly Sue Deconnick and Emma Rios. For some reason Jenny is wearing a bear skull cap and Cynthia allowed that to happen. The lovely nerdy ladies give their thoughts on the new funny book and what is acceptable to tear in half. Spoiler alert: comic books aren't one of them.
