Back in 2010 when we mourned the closure and then demolition of Tucson's last drive-in, the De Anza, Tucson artist Charlie Spillar was there with a group of volunteers who saved components of the drive-in's giant screen with the idea to use them for a new nonprofit drive-in project they coined the Cactus Drive-In, the name of the original drive-in at the same Alvernon Way location in 1951.
Four years later, Spillar is still in Tucson and he and other drive-in enthusiasts haven't given up on the dream, and Weekly World Central is glad they have that tenacious desert spirit. They formed the Cactus Drive-in Theatre Foundation and they launched a Kickstarter today to make it happen—they want to raise $18,000.
C'mon Tucson. We love outdoor movie theater experiences, but there's nothing like a drive-in. Let's do this.
From Charlie:
The Cactus Drive-In Theater Foundation is a non-profit (501C3) with plans to bring a drive-in theater back to town. Their ultimate goal is to establish a permanent, community-owned drive-in theater in Pima County. This Kickstarter project will bring them one step closer to fulfilling that dream. In April of this year the original founders George Cohn and Charles Spillar of the CDITF took back control of the non-profit, elected a total new board of directors, and this new energized group has revitalized the efforts to have a drive-in theater back in Tucson. Originally the Cactus Drive-In Theatre, it was renamed the DeAnza in 1977 and kept the name until its closure & destruction in 2009. Many mourned the downfall of Tucson's last drive-in theater. As a result the Cactus Drive-In Theatre Foundation was formed, and its Facebook page blossomed to nearly 1500 followers since April of this year and new supporters are joining daily.
The funds raised through this project will go towards the purchase of a large inflatable movie screen, a high-quality movie projector, and generator. These materials, paired with their existing FM transmitter and authentic restored drive-in movie speakers, will allow them to host "pop up" drive-in movie events throughout Pima County. This "pop-up" model is currently being implemented successfully in Punta Gorda, Florida to show monthly drive-in movies for their community.
When the non-profit acquires a permanent location in the future for a drive-in, CDITF will be able to continue to use the inflatable screen for several years. A special digital movie projector is required to show new, first-run movies (which is not in the scope of this Kickstarter project). Other infrastructure (a permanent snack bar, flush toilets, etc.) will be added over time.

Our Weekly World Central fashion spirit guide, CandyStrike's Elizabeth Denneau, has a GoFundMe campaign that's about $700 away from the $1,700 goal.
Denneau, from her Toole Avenue warehouse boutique and studio, makes clothes for everyone (but those of the plus-size arena appreciate her creative spirit and great style). She's been given the opportunity to pitch to a major retail label and she needs help with travel expenses and to make sure she goes in there looking chic and beautiful despite the deadline.
Give this local business some love and be part of CandyStrike's future.
From her campaign page:
Just recently I was approached by a major online retailer, who is interested in purchasing a private label collection from me. Which is great! The catch? I have to go out to them and present my ideas to them, have samples, and other industry documents and information in place in less than 3 weeks. When opportunities come I bust ass and take it, but I am lacking in the extra capital to make this happen. Most designers have a team to excute a pitch like this. I have myself, my one staff, and an intern (also a very wonderful photog, MUA, & models who volunteer their time to me). I have the odds stacked up against me but I'm good at busting through walls. And I'm not super great at admitting it- but I need your help.My big pitch is the week of the 17th. I need capital for travel. I also need capital for samples (jeesh fabric can be pricey!), the various industry documents I need to make my pitch (line sheets, look books, etc..), and fees to help with finding a liason with U.S. manfacturers. If you give to me I hope you don't look at it as charity, but an investment in a small business with a great mission that is growing quickly.I'd like to give you a little something for your investment. Check out the reward levels (they're named after some of my favorite designers).
I thank all of you for your continued support and I know times are still tight for a lot of us, so please don't feel bad if you can't give. I can use all the prayers and well wishes I can get to land this account!

Only 523 more signatures are needed for a Change.org petition to have Weird Al headline the Super Bowl halftime show. Make it happen Weird Tucson people. Make it happen.
From the petition:
For decades Weird Al has entertained fans, young and old, with his popular clever parodies and unique sense of humor. Having him headline the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show. would not only be overly accepted by the millions of views, but it would remain true to the standards and quality of the show business we have come to love and respect out of this prestigious event. The songs of artists that he is parodying could join him on stage to accompany, as well as other surprise appearances from well-known actors/actresses, adding more prestige and star power. The theatrics alone would be hilarious and a welcoming change, and draw a wider audience of fans that typically would not tune into the championship game or half-time show.

There are approximately 6,895 events happening in Tucson this weekend between the various streetcar festivities, FC Tucson's playoff run, the opening of Pizzeria Bianco, etc, but if you enjoy good causes, dancing and food (and who doesn't?), add Sol Axe's Monsoon Mania 2014 tribute to Soul Train tomorrow night to your list of things to do.
Sol Axe is a reformed version of Afro-Brazilian celebrators Batucaxe, although with the added benefit of being under the Many Mouths, One Stomach umbrella, so now dancing and having a samba-filled good time also helps All Souls happen.
The event promises family-friendly fun, food trucks, performance and DJ sets, the ability to sign up for The All Souls Processions Night of 1000 Parties and of course, the opportunity to dance in a Soul Train line, which is a magical experience any time.
Monsoon Mania 2014 is Saturday, July 26 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Rhythm Industry Performance Factory at 1013 S. Tyndall Ave. The suggested donation is $10. More info can be found at Sol Axe's Facebook page at facebook.com/SolAxeTucson.

Local comedians can jump on stage, ditch their set lists/best punchlines, and pray that someone in the audience texts a funny topic to joke about.
If you haven't experienced this improv comedy show, here's your chance: The Switch will feature some of Tucson's local talent and special guest at 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Club Congress, 311 N. Congress St. There's no cover charge, and your participation is encouraged. Click here to RSVP on the Facebook.
Here's the latest trailer that was filmed by local filmmaker Ben Riley Lane and comedian Ryan Malchow:
