Fun Tucson Weekly Editor fact: Dan Gibson is a closet stand up comedian.

You might have noticed how quick and witty our editor is, but it's almost funnier in person.

Jacob Breckenridge and professional comedian Pauly Casillas are hosting their monthly improv comedy show The Switch tonight from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Plush, 340 E. Sixth St.

Some of Tucson's best comedians are on the bill, but this month's special guest is your favorite Weekly editor: Dan Gibson. Every comedian gets 5-7 topics and has to make jokes on the spot. It's like playing Russian Chatroulette, but with no Next or Stop button to save you.

Please note that Steve Harvey will not be performing at the show.

Here some local music 101 for you. Local indie up-and-coming band Sunbones was featured in a short documentary that gives a good retrospect and a good perspective of how they seem themselves. Charley Brown and Rusty Boulet-Stephenson interviewed the band members and recorded their Jan. 24 performance at Cartel Lab downtown. We have been known to have our love hate relationship with the band, (see Live review here) and we are still not impressed with "The guy playing the tambourine" and his Limp Bizkit-style dance moves.

You can check Sunbones, Former Friends of Young Americans, Glass Affection, Jacob Acosta and the Troubadours tonight at Plush, 640 E. Sith St. $5 admission. Doors open at 9 p.m. Click here to RSVP on the Facebook event page.

This is the closest to being in the year 1926 you will get. Tucson's alternative classical quintet will perform the soundtrack to Buster Keaton's silent film The General on Saturday, April 19 at the Fox Theatre, 17 W. Congress St.

From the press release:

ChamberLab composers Chris Black, Dante Rosano, Marco Rosano, and Tony Rosano have written new music for strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, and at least one piano, bringing the excitement of Buster Keaton's most well-known and heart-pounding film to life. There are train chases. There is cannon fire. There is a bridge collapse. The North and the South grapple for the destiny of the country. ChamberLab is there, with full artillery.

The General was a box office failure and collectively disliked by critics and fans alike. Fast forward 63 years, the film is now considered a cinematic masterpiece and one of Roger Ebert's top 10 films. The cinematic classic is right up there with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Vertigo.

Tickets are only $10. Click here to purchase your tickets and here to visit the ChamberLab’s Facebook page for more information.

Tired of going to job fairs with no alcohol? Start Up Tucson is hosting a Job Crawl from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1 at Gentle Ben's, 865 East University Boulevard. "This event is designed to connect the best of the UA talent with the best local employers," said founder and President of Startup Tucson Justin Williams.

It invites in top companies & opportunities in Tucson that may not historically have been a part of why talented graduates can stay in town. Its is designed to make it easier for those innovative Tucson companies that want to recruit student talent, but they may only be hiring one person. And they may only hire that person every two years.

The best part is the dress code or lack there of. "No need for three piece suits and ties but do look presentable. From a t-shirt and jeans to a blazer and khakis, anything in that range is appropriate," according to the event page. So, bring your resume, business cards and winning personality.

Go to the RSVP page for more information.

KUAT - Cooper Center from J David Betts on Vimeo.

It's Camp Cooper's 50th birthday and the environmental education center on the edge of the Tucson Mountains is celebrating on Sunday, March 30. The 50th anniversary will kick-off with a food truck round-up from 5 to 9 p.m. at 5403 W. Trails End Road. There will be demonstrations, live music and stargazing with the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) as part of the Globe at Night citizen-science campaign.

Those who grew up in Tucson and attended TUSD schools can recall spending over-night at the center, and consequently so do many parents as well. It a special place and deserves a wonderful celebration. Happy Birthday, Camp Cooper. You're loved.

From UANews:

Managed through a groundbreaking partnership between the University of Arizona’s College of Education and Tucson Unified School District, the center, known as "Camp Cooper," has become a Tucson tradition — a place where children from kindergarten through eighth grade visit for overnight stays and learn about the Sonoran Desert.

...

"Our history is made up of the experiences that children have enjoyed at Cooper over the years," said Colin Waite, who directs the Cooper Center, which is housed in the UA College of Education. "We want to celebrate the role Cooper plays in sharing the wonders of the natural world and in molding the environmental leaders of tomorrow."

...

"I can still remember sitting around the campfire with my friends, sleeping in the cabins and especially exploring the desert," said Leiba Schuneman, who experienced Camp Cooper as a student at Lineweaver Elementary School.

"Spending time in nature is an important part of my life, from hiking and camping in college to sharing the desert and mountains with my two sons today," said Schuneman, who chairs the mathematics department University High School.

Environmental learning programs at the Cooper Center are ongoing during the school year. Through the partnership TUSD maintains ownershop of the center and is responsibible for its facilites, while UA employees coordiante programming and manage the daily functions of the site.

The center's staff affirm that the center's value within the classroom and beyond cannot be underestimated.

"As someone who's done environmental education in Tucson for the past eight years, I've discovered there's no substitute for getting kids out into the desert," said Moses Thompson, a Manzo Elementary teacher and counselor.

"The sense of scale and assault on your senses can't be mimicked," Thompson said. "Cooper Center taps into the desert’s potential not only through its unparalleled location but through the quality programs it delivers."

So, how about that game last night? You know, UA's tense comeback victory over San Diego State, which punched their ticket to the 2014 NCAA basketball tournament's Elite Eight?

Well, if you're looking to watch the game surrounded by a sizable number of rabid Wildcat fans, the Rialto's got the treat for you:
We cordially invite you to watch the Elite 8 games with us on our giant projection screen on Saturday. We will open up at 2:30 pm for Dayton/Florida and get crazy for the Cats game starting at 5:49. BTFD!
That's right, East Congress' favorite former movie theater is setting up the screen once again for Wildcat basketball fans to catch their Elite Eight matchup against the Wisconsin Badgers tomorrow, Saturday, March 29.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m., entry will be free and yes, they'll have seating set up for watching the game — standing is, after all, a sucker's game.

Check it out, cheer on the 'Cats if you're so inclined, and stay classy out there, Tucson.

Remember: We've been here before. Wait until the 'Cats take the title before you take the streets.

The Coming OUT Queer Dance Party starts at 10 p.m. at La Cocina, 201 N. Court Ave.
  • From the Coming OUT Queer Dance Party at La Cocina Facebook event page.
  • The Coming OUT Queer Dance Party starts at 10 p.m. at La Cocina, 201 N. Court Ave.

It gets bigger and bigger every year. The Coming OUT Queer Dance Party is celebrating its third year of unadulterated and safe monthly fiestas at La Cocina, 201 N. Court Ave. So, this is super last minute because I just got the invite this morning. The 21 and older party stars at 10 p.m.

On March 25th, 2011, 2 brown queers from the hood birthed from their b-holes the first Coming Out Queer Dance Party in hopes of creating a fun and safe space for ALL Tucson queers and their allies to dance to anything and everything queer and queer-loved. The goals were set early: "House party jams. Pop pleasures. Drop-it-low booty bass. ANAL BEATZ."

3 YEARS LATER and we're still at it.

Thanks to the support of the wonderful gang at La Cocina and from everyone who shows up every month to get crazy and dance out their hearts + buttz until 2AM, we still have this little DIY-style dance party to enjoy every last Friday of the month. CUM celebrate 3 wonderful years of dance-floor-dry-humping, last-minute-dance-contests, and watching Jaime dance on a table in his underwear. Tucson, we love you.

FRANK.SHOW.jpg

Shameless self-promotion alert! I will be a guest on the The World Famous Frank Show tomorrow at approximately 7:30 a.m. I will be discussing the Weekly's 100 Essential Dishes list with the fellas, and hopefully talking Frank out of the drive through bit.

If anyone is awake at that hour, considering the whole city will be celebrating our Sweet 16 Victory (or god forbid, drowning our sorrows of a loss), tune in and catch my ever so charming nervous sta-sta-stutter and constant stream of "umms" and "uhhs".

Go Cats!!!

Heroica Nogales-born artist Paco Valdez and his wife Sarah K. Smith no longer live in Tucson (yes, work took them to Seattle, but they still hold strong roots here and I suspect that one day they'll be back—they always come back), but they are still with us in spirit. Valdez operated and worked from Studio One at the tool shed and at area schools, and Smith worked in education outreach for Centennial Hall. Friends of the couple also know their four legged companion Milo.

Well, Milo has a benign tumor growing under his eyelid and it needs to be removed right away. Without the surgery, the tumor will grow and damage his cornea. Valdez and Smith are asking for donations on YouCaring.com. The estimated expenses could amount to $1,500 and so far they've raised $490—Milo and his parents can use your help. Maybe, if you give a little, you can ask the couple if you can spend a little time with the pooch the next they visit—it will make you realize your donation, big or small, was well worth it.
