Namibian Caracals are being eradicated for lack of awareness.

  • Namibian Caracals are being eradicated for lack of awareness.

Aletris Neils, a burgeoning researcher in mammalian conservation and PhD student at the University of Arizona, has been working in southern Namibia, South Africa, for the last several years to raise awareness for the Namibian Caracal. The caracal, a medium-sized predatory cat, are being killed by farmers and ranchers who fear for their livestock.

However, it is a misconception that holds a dire consequence when the cats, apex predators in their ecosystem, are completely eradicated.

Jon Wayne and The Pain, playing The Hut this Saturday, may not be at celebrity status just yet, but they certainly seem to be gaining popularity with reggae-rock lovers, with fans often referring to their music as "redemption reggae." They operate in a similar musical genre as Sublime (and people like Sublime) with an island-style mix of ska, reggae and rock, and Jon Wayne's vocals mesh well with the different genres, but they still remain distinct enough to not be a knockoff act.

To listen to more from the band, visit the John Wayne and The Pain website.

Though the Slackers are usually labeled in the ska genre, it's hard to say they perform one style of music - because they really don't.

They're reggae. They're soul. They're jazz.

In fact, it's probably why their fans find them so appealing - they can relate to the music because is covers genres across the board.

The Slackers are celebrating their 20th anniversary tour and they stop in Tucson on Wednesday for a show at 8 p.m.

Here's what Tucson Weekly's Stephen Seigel said about the band in 2009:

You've gotta hand it to The Slackers. As one of the first and best bands of the third wave of ska in the 1990s, they've outlasted and outclassed just about every other American ska act. Perhaps it's due to their versatility; rather than simply merging ska rhythms and horns with punk rock, as so many bands of the era did, The Slackers showed a bit more respect for ska's roots, drawing from reggae, soul, dub and jazz along the way. Hell, any ska band that covers a Nat Adderley tune on its first album is all right by me.

Former Tucson Weekly intern/current freelancer/great photographer/nice guy Josh Morgan wants to go to Africa to film a documentary about the Caracal cat and the issues facing its survival in Namibia and he has a Kickstarter running to help him get the resources together to do so. Now I know next to nothing about animals, but Josh is such a talented guy and he's working with legit people on this thing, so it seems to be the project is at least worth your consideration. The deadline is March 12th and there are some cool bonuses for people who make a pledge.

Foreigner_Publicity___1.jpg

Some bands are sneaky popular, where you don't actually realize how many hits they had until you think about it for a bit. Foreigner are one of those bands, with six platinum albums, three platinum greatest hits collections, and sixteen top 40 singles. They just have a lot of songs you're likely to sing along to if you heard them on the radio.

So, when you hear that Foreigner are coming to the Diamond Center at the Desert Diamond Casino on Pima Mine Rd. on March 1st at 7pm, you know that you'll get your money's worth on the tickets (priced at $35 to $65). However, if you want something beyond the experience of just seeing the band perform their hits, we have something for you.

Thanks to the band, we can offer one lucky Tucson Weekly reader (and their equally fortunate associate) not just two tickets to the show, but ALSO a pair of passes to a meet-and-greet with the group. Just go to our contest page to enter (you'll need to be a registered member of our site to enter, but that's a pretty simple process).

Entries via our website will need to be received by Feb. 24th at 5:00 pm to be eligible, and the winner will be notified by email by Feb. 27. To ensure the tickets and passes are actually used, you will need to reply to the "Congratulations!" email in a timely manner to receive the prize. Good luck!

You may know her as the Season 2 winner of the local singing competition, Lucky Break. Or maybe your recognize her from when she received the golden ticket to Hollywood on American Idol.

But most of you probably remember Tora Woloshin as the vocalist that blew away the judges on X Factor USA.

On Feb. 14 the petite, blonde powerhouse released her debut album, "Open Heart Surgery" - and she even tweeted that it already sold out (but more are on the way).

Tucson Weekly music editor Stephen Seigel wrote about her record release party in Soundbites this week:

A few months ago, Woloshin was delighted to come across a fan video of a toddler dancing to one of her X Factor performances. It wasn't until she started doing research to find a charity beneficiary for her upcoming CD-release party that she discovered that the toddler in the video, a Tucsonan named Caleb, was afflicted with neurofibromatosis (NF). According to a press release, "NF is a common neurological disorder that can cause tumors to grow anywhere in or on the body and can result in cancer, blindness, deafness, bone deformities, loss of limb and scoliosis." But that wasn't all: Caleb's 10-year-old sister and their father are also afflicted by the disorder. Woloshin had found her beneficiary.

This week, Woloshin will drop that CD, Open Heart Surgery (JukeBox), with a release party that doubles as a fundraiser for the Children's Tumor Foundation, which is "dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by NF."

Tora Woloshin celebrates the release of Open Heart Surgery on Saturday, Feb. 18, at DV8, 5851 E. Speedway Blvd. Doors open at 8 p.m., and special guests include Vintage Sugar, Broken Romeo, DJ Brandon and rapper Chris Young. Tickets are $10, or $25 for a VIP package that includes a CD. All ages are welcome, and there will be a bar for those older than 21. For more information, call the venue at 885-3030, or head to showclix.com/event/ToraCDRelease.

The good news: Borderlands Brewing will be open from 4 to 7 pm tonight, with MaFooCo serving Korean tacos and such, beer on tap, and live music.

The not so good news: The previously announced Project White House Beer Summit is not happening in an official sense this evening. Some presidential candidates will still be in attendance and probably some Tucson Weekly staffers as well, so it's still worth stopping by (mostly for the beer), but there won't be a full-on campaign event.

Sorry for the late notice and possible inconvenience.

Young the Giant doesn't necessarily make me think "indie rock band." Their music sounds like it draws from classic rock influences with a modern twist. It would be worth it to see this band on Wednesday, as frontman Sameer Gadhia's strong vocals sound even better live than on the studio recordings.

Concert tickets for Young the Giant are selling out in cities all over the country, but it looks like it's not too late for Tucson. Check out the Rialto Theatre's website for tickets.

Here's what Tucson Weekly's Eric Swedlund said about Young the Giant:

The music is grounded in their garage-band roots, but branches out to explore some different territories—power-pop, laden with sunny California melodies; post-garage swagger like the Strokes; and even throwbacks to 1980s alternative, sometimes toward the glammier end of things like the Killers, and sometimes just celebrating the sound of big, bold guitars.
