It's mid-August in Tucson, and just the time for a beach fix. Alas the waves are miles away, but we can dream.

Here's a taste of the new Hawaii Five-O with cool theme song in tact.

If you'd like to be part of one of the least-exclusive, but most-attractive Facebook pages in Tucson, head over to http://www.facebook.com/tucsonweekly and join the alternative to bland daily journalism in Southern Arizona.

View Tucson Weekly's Art Box Extravaganza! in a larger map

A couple of months ago, we told you about Tucson Weekly's Art Box Extravaganza project where we ask local artists to decorate our red distribution boxes. Now, we're up to 10 art boxes at various spots around town (we've conveniently plotted the location of each one on a handy Google Map).

As always, if you'd like to have your artistic way with one of our boxes, email our circulation manager, Laura Horvath at [email protected]. It can be anything you want, but it must be usable as a newspaper box and it has to have the Tucson Weekly logo somewhere on the completed box.

After all, if you can't get your newspaper from a box with an old pair of sneakers glued to the top, where can you get it?

Honey from Southwest Bee Supply.
  • Honey from Southwest Bee Supply.
A visit to Southwest Bee Supply at 844 S. Sixth Ave. this morning turned up some interesting facts about bees and honey, by way of owner Roy Wilson Jr.:

1. There is speculation among local beekeepers that the honey supply may run short this year. Bees have been unexpectedly leaving hives, and they take half of the honey with them when they do. Should this happen, Wilson expects a spike in honey prices prior to supplies running out completely.

2. Heating honey to infuse it with flavors destroys the stuff that some say is beneficial to allergy sufferers. A cold-infusion process does not. Wilson uses a cold infusion process to make his flavored honeys.

3. Adding a queen bee of European descent to a swarm of aggressive Africanized bees will change the nature of the group. This "re-queening" of an aggressive swarm is used to domesticate bees for honey production, which Wilson says is a practical alternative to insecticides.

4. Wilson's honey is a lot cheaper than what's found at many local farmers' markets.

The "Ugliest House in Tucson" contest is underway, through Friday, July 2. Vote here.
The contest is sponsored by HomeVestors of America, known as the "We Buy Ugly Houses®" company.

Here's more info from a press release:

“The contest is a fun way to bring the community together to celebrate ugly houses and their potential to be transformed,” said Fred Hubbard of Catalina Valley Properties, LLC. “We all win when these ugly houses become the belles of their block after they’ve had a makeover, adding beauty and value to the neighborhoods.”

Voters can cast their ballots after viewing photos and detailed property descriptions. Nominees for the 2010 “Ugliest House in Tucson” contest were selected from a call-for-entries held in March, when all real estate investors in the Tucson area were invited to submit the ugliest houses they had bought at any time between March 1, 2009 and February 28, 2010. Most of the houses nominated have since been rehabbed and transformed into lovely homes, with some sold on the retail market and others maintained as rental properties.

If you've picked up our paper this week, you may have noticed it in a slightly different home than our ubiquitous red boxes.

We've invited artists to redesign the drop boxes in any way they choose (one even came back with pink horns) as part of our Art Box Project.

If you'd like to have your artistic way with one of our boxes, email our circulation manager, Laura Horvath at [email protected]. It can be anything you want, but it must be usable as a newspaper box and it has to have the Tucson Weekly logo somewhere on the completed box.

As we get new ones, we'll post them to our interactive Google Map.
