This weekend the community is invited to visit the Pima Animal Care Center for a grill cookout to help support the initiatives of PACC and help cats at the shelter find permanent homes!

Admission is $5.00 to buy food at the adoption event. Guests can choose a choice of a hamburger or hotdog with chips and a drink, vegan options will also be served. To cool down from the Arizona heat, Snocones will also be available for a $1.00 donation.

Beethoven Odyssey. The Tucson Symphony Orchestra is back with their 2018-2019 season, and they’re kicking it off with a bang: Conductor José Luis Gomez will be leading the orchestra in playing music from 2001: A Space Odyssey on its 50th anniversary, including Richard Strauss’ tone poem "Thus Spake Zarathustra." The Station Agent. For their Third Friday Fall Film Series Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is screening Peter Dinklage’s breakthrough film. This comedy drama shows a man’s efforts to seek social isolation fall apart when he ends up befriending other oddballs. The Thing (1982). One of the greatest remakes in cinema history also happens to be a crowning achievement in practical effects. Tucson 5K Dash & Walk Like MADD 2018. The best thing you can do to help prevent drunk and drugged driving in our community is to not drive drunk or high in our community. Equinox and Beyond. Join the downtown performance artists at Cirque Roots for their annual celebration of community and art! Tucson is, of course, one big celebration of community and art, in a way, but on this night, check out a variety show, beats by DJ Cruise Control and lots of spontaneous art. The fall equinox (the day when the sun shines directly on the equator and day and night are nearly the same length) happens at exactly 6:54 p.m. in Tucson, so consider this event the after party, or a party to ring in the fall season. 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Gary Farmer & The Troublemakers. He’s not just an award-winning actor, and he’s not just an award-winning actor and director. Gary Miller is also a director and a Native American activist best known for his roles in films like Dead Man and Pow Wow Highway. He’s coming to Tucson with his five-piece blues, roots and jam band to play a night full of both originals and covers. Joining him is his friend Derek Miller, who has been playing music for three decades and is known as a hotshot on the indigenous music scene. 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. The Grand Canyon Mystery. Join Live Theatre Workshop as they tell this original story about a gang of critters on the north rim of the Grand Canyon getting ready for the winter. As they’re taking stock off their supplies and shelter, they realize the food supply they’ve saved up all year is gone! Who did this? Was it the raccoon? Maybe the snake? Probably the weasel. Or worse still, was it someone in the inner circle of the Fraternal Order of the Great Northern Rim (FOGNeR), like Barry Buffalo or Alfred Binghampton Elk III? Catalina State Park “Split Endz” Trail Race, Run and Walk. Everyone Runs, Everyone Walks is hosting this 5.2-mile and 10.35-mile trail race and 5K road run and walk through Catalina State Park. They pride themselves on making events that are friendly for beginners as well as avid runners, so there will be mostly moderate climbs and descents on the trail run and plenty of course support. Old and New World Harvest Demonstration. The Presidio San Agustin is back at it again with the hands-on educational activities that keep all ages engaged. In this presentation, you’ll learn all about the crops that are native to our sweet Sonoran Desert, as well as the plants and foodstuffs originally from Europe. It never hurts to learn a little bit more about the desert we call home, and it especially never hurts to work up an appetite while you’re doing it. How did we get this show for free?

L.A. Latina comic Luz Pazos drops in for a headlining set at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25 at The Mint Cocktails, 3540 E. Grant Road. No cover.

Pazos is a Peruvian egghead from Los Angeles via Italy who apparently got bored being a fashion model. She’s won more than her share of comedy contests in L.A., and has played the Comedy Store, Improv and Laugh Factory as well as festivals in Toronto, Asheville and Portland. Soon we’ll see her in the First Nations of Comedy on PBS.

With this show, promoter Joey G introduces an upgrade to his ongoing weekly open mic at the Mint. Bringing fresh talent to Tucson provides talented locals more experience opening for established headliners. It’s a model that’s already spurred the two-year growth of Brew Ha Ha at Borderlands Brewery.

Say My Name

Cunts Being Cunts Talking About Cunts returns at 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28 at CANS DELI; $5. Organizers say they originated the show to give cunts the respect they deserve.
Now in its second year, the quarterly event benefits the YWCA’s Project Period, which provides free sanitary products as needed. The band Cool Funeral performs following the comedy line-up, including hosts Mo Urban and Steena Salido, Phoenix comedian Sloan Valenzuela, and award-winning storyteller Molly McCloy, among others, including moi.

Opening the Main Gate

Chad Lehrman and his tucsoncomedy.com site debut Tucson’s Best Comedy at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Gentle Ben’s, 865 E. University Blvd.; $5. Featured comedians are Pauly Casillas, a veteran of Funny Or Die and Laughs on Fox; Kristine Levine of Portlandia; Matt Ziemak, winner of 96.1 KLPX Laugh-Off; Mo Urban, host of Tucson’s The Dating Game; Ali Musa and, as host and emcee, Dom Di Tolla.

Tucson cartoonist David Fitzsimmons’ presents Thanks for the Mammaries: The Estrogen Hour’s finest Hour at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Laff’s Comedy Caffe. Tickets are $15 via freshtix.com/events/titters. The show is 21 and older.

This is the second show Fitzsimmons has produced to raise money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, an event organized by the American Cancer Society. Fitzsimmons lost his mother and sister to breast cancer.

Estrogen Hour founder Nancy Stanley hosts the show. The full lineup, including a couple of breast-cancer survivors, is Stacy Sheff, Steena Salido, Mo Urban, Charlotte Bellflower, Amber Frame, and your humble Laughing Stock scribe. 

The Fred Fox School of Music will be having one of their annual concert performances which will include three of their eight choir groups, on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:20 p.m.

The choirs performing are University Singers, Kantorei and Honors Choir, all of which are typically comprised of undergraduate choral students.

Genres that will be featured in this concert are a combination of contemporary and world music that will be conducted by graduate conducting students.

The concert will be held on the Main Campus at Crowder Hall in the Fred Fox School of Music Building, located on 1017 N. Olive Road.

Supporting the University of Arizona's Choral groups is easy as tickets are free!

Galileo. This weekend is your last chance to see the Rogue Theatre’s production of this play by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Charles Laughton. It’s fitting that it’s being staged at the Rogue Theatre, because it’s a (fictionalized) telling of all the struggles Galileo Galilei went through when he went rogue and confirmed the Copernican model of the solar system. With the headquarters of the Catholic Church being located on Earth, you can imagine the Catholic Church not being very pleased at the news that the Earth was not the center of the universe. Cynthia Meier directs, Jake Sorgen did the original composition and music direction, and a discussion with the cast and director follows each performance. Border Radio Screening. The Center for Creative Photography and the Hanson Film Institute are starting a new film series featuring independent female directors. This first film in the series, directed by Allison Anders, depicts the American independent film explosion through the lens of those who were there. Mountain Adventure Horseback Ride. Unwind every Monday and Wednesday by strolling through the Rincon Mountains on horseback. Jordan World Circus 2018. On Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., the Fox Tucson Theatre will host The Australian Pink Floyd Show. It is a tribute show that performs the music of Pink Floyd. The show includes a light and laser show, video animations, filmed sequences on a large LED screen as well as other special effects. These effects will be accompanied by several large inflatables like a pink kangaroo.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show began in 1988 and has performed in over 35 countries worldwide and sold-out audiences throughout Europe, UK, America, Canada, South America, Israel and Russia. The show has collectively sold 4 million tickets. The tickets for the local iteration of the event range from $37-$87.

  

Get a load of this: the Screening Room will get extra kinky this October with Dan Savage’s HUMP!, a home-made-porn film festival. The festival features short porno flicks, five minutes or less, all made by people who aren’t porn stars but get to be one for the weekend.

The self-proclaimed filmmakers and stars shoot their movies to show the audience what they think is sexy, wild or wacky. The films showcase a veritable pornocopia of different body sizes, shapes, ages, colors, sexualities, genders, kinks, and fetishes.

"It’s hard to believe HUMP! has been going strong for 13 years,” Savage says of the festival. “We are always amazed at the variety of films we receive each year. Choosing the films that ultimately make it in the festival is a huge challenge. Audiences will be watching things that take them outside their comfort zones. Some of it is hilarious. Some of it is romantic. Some of it is totally raunchy.” 

So if you feel like experiencing over a dozen new and adventurous homemade movies with a bunch of strangers in a dark room, get on over to The Screening Room. All-in-all, HUMP! is a celebration of sexual freedom and inclusion.

There have been some interesting developments in the world of classic American staples recently, such as Heinz announcing their production of Mayochup.

What is this strange pink-ish orange substance you ask? Well, its apparently the perfect mix of ketchup and mayonnaise.

In April the internet furiously debated the new condiment, good or bad? It's something little kids have been making variations of for ages, but now the mixture is hitting shelves for real.

The condiment, however, will not make it nationally at first, and Heinz's marketing team has set up a contest to see which city will get the funny pink sauce first.

Through midnight tonight you can vote on Twitter for which city should get saucy first. The city that gets the most Tweets will get a Food Truck Takeover and be the first to officially try the new Mayochup:

Downtown Tucson was crawling with hungry samplers on Saturday afternoon at the Taste of Tucson Grub Crawl.

The crawl started at the Independent Distillery, who were celebrating the third anniversary of their grand opening. Attendees then crawled to Thunder Canyon Brewstillery for appetizers and beer, Cartel Coffee Lab for Jenga and coffee, then to Insomnia Cookies for a cookie and another round of Jenga.

Next they traveled on to Berry Divine Açaí Bowls for a sample and explanation on what they make, then to Empire Pizza & Pub who graciously provided entire pies for the hungry crawlers. The group then finally headed to The Screamery for an ice-cream dessert. Other venders included Highwire Lounge and Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market.

After traipsing around town and filling up on all the great local grub, the crawlers headed back to the Independent Distillery for drinks and some live music.

The event, put on by HERO Events, raised money for charities focused on helping veterans. Mayra Hindbaugh and Brett Wagner of HERO Events organized the crawl and said that the money raised will go towards the veterans-helping-veterans organization Rally Point Arizona and to a veterans event they are hosting at Reid Park in on Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10 and 11.

On Nov. 10 there will be a veterans rally with food, live music and activities from 2 to 8 p.m. The next day the group is hosting a motorcycle run and golf tournament at Forty Niner Country Club. Read more about Rally Point Arizona here.

The team at Hero Events said that they hope to add more restaurants and eateries to their Grub Crawl to expand the event next year.
