The program offers grants up to $5,000 to fund STEM projects in classrooms including subjects like science, technology, engineering and math. The grant program started in 2008 and has since awarded more than $8 million dollars in grants to teachers. It has provided students with the opportunity to use recent technology tools in their education and supports student achievement.
The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation is an organization dedicated to improving local communities. In the 2017-2018 school year, nearly 2,000 grant applications were submitted and more than 300 grants were awarded based on the project's overall innovation and anticipated impact the project would have in the classroom.
Applications for the Teachers and Technology grant will be accepted now through Jan. 12, 2019. The review process will be completed and grants will be presented from April 1 to May 15. To apply for a grant, click here.

pumpkin CAT-ch?
You decide which of fuzzy, bundled of love you can't live without!Pima Animal Care Center will be hosting “Pumpkin Patch Adoptions” with trunk-or-treating, games, raffles and costumes (please no masks or weapons as it will scare the animals). The event is on Sunday, Oct. 28, 10 am to 5pm.
The event is part of a “Pumpkin Promo” that starts on Oct. 15th throughout the rest of the month.
“Adopters can come by the shelter where they will find on the bottom of a pumpkin, a discount on pets who are four months or older.”
All pets adopted from PACC come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, according to PACC. Each adoption also comes free follow-up vet visit.
Can’t make it to the event? Stop by the shelter Monday to Friday 12-7pm or Sat/Sun 10am-5pm at 4000 N. Silverbell Road.
Pima Animal Care Center: Is our community’s only open-admission shelter. PACC cares for about 17,000 pets each year and is the only shelter in the county that never turns away a pet in need. PACC is also our community’s largest adoption agency and has the largest selection of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens

Hosted at the Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley, a “musical salute to freedom and liberty will be dedicated to those who have defended it” will start at 2pm on Oct. 14, 2018.
Performers will include the Manhattan Dolls, Robert Shaw and “Tucson music legend” Armen Dirtadian and a world class band singing renditions of “God Bless America,” “America The Beautiful,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
Not only will all of the “lyrics and melodies that make our country great” be sung in honor of the brave men and women who have served our country, but a portion of the proceeds will be donated to help our veterans who are still healing from conditions acquired while serving, like traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Established in 2014, grassroots organization Healing Veterans of Arizona has set out to do just that— help our veterans heal from conditions suffered in combat using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), in addition to nutritional programs.

The program works to help people realize their potential in all aspects of their lives. By providing resources and help from volunteers, it gives people an opportunity to make sustainable changes in their lives.
According to their website, they provide innovative-strengths programming that motivates learners to make a change.
Literacy Connects is looking for more volunteers to help people of all different ages, races, backgrounds and cultures. Volunteers can help teach math, reading, writing, studying for the GED and other topics needed to succeed in the future.
Classes for the program are held all throughout Tucson. Tutors work in teams at libraries, schools, churches and community centers for adult students. For children in the program, tutors will work directly in their schools. Bilingual Tutors are also needed.
Literacy Connects is in need of tutors all over the city but it is more urgent in the southern and western parts of Tucson.
There are info sessions on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, which are required before training to become a tutor. For more information, go to their website.

Proceeds from the event will provide equine therapy for disabled children and veterans in need. TROT has licensed riding instructors and therapists, along with 13 specially trained horses, with the mission of enriching the lives of people with special needs by improving their physical, mental, social and emotional well being.
There will be a silent auction, a live auction and a BBQ dinner, along with music and dancing with the Clean Country Band. Tickets are $85 for adults and $30 for children 11 and younger. This is a rain or shine event.

Downtown Tucson was crawling with hungry samplers on Saturday afternoon at the Taste of Tucson Grub Crawl.
The crawl started at the Independent Distillery, who were celebrating the third anniversary of their grand opening. Attendees then crawled to Thunder Canyon Brewstillery for appetizers and beer, Cartel Coffee Lab for Jenga and coffee, then to Insomnia Cookies for a cookie and another round of Jenga.
Next they traveled on to Berry Divine Açaí Bowls for a sample and explanation on what they make, then to Empire Pizza & Pub who graciously provided entire pies for the hungry crawlers. The group then finally headed to The Screamery for an ice-cream dessert. Other venders included Highwire Lounge and Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market.
After traipsing around town and filling up on all the great local grub, the crawlers headed back to the Independent Distillery for drinks and some live music.
The event, put on by HERO Events, raised money for charities focused on helping veterans. Mayra Hindbaugh and Brett Wagner of HERO Events organized the crawl and said that the money raised will go towards the veterans-helping-veterans organization Rally Point Arizona and to a veterans event they are hosting at Reid Park in on Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10 and 11.
On Nov. 10 there will be a veterans rally with food, live music and activities from 2 to 8 p.m. The next day the group is hosting a motorcycle run and golf tournament at Forty Niner Country Club. Read more about Rally Point Arizona here.
The team at Hero Events said that they hope to add more restaurants and eateries to their Grub Crawl to expand the event next year.

Registration is at 7 a.m.
Put on by the Community Food Bank, this event raises funds and awareness for the fight against hunger. There will be music, entertainment, games, activities, snacks and more.
The walk will traverse 1.5 miles through the Community Food Bank’s food pantry, main warehouse and gardens. Walkers will learn about hunger, the programs and services of the food bank and how they can get involved.
Bring your friends and family, the walk will be fun for all ages!

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Get a chance to win tickets to the University of Arizona football games as a raffle will be hosted at the event! Help save lives and give back to your community. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. need blood and one donation can potentially save up to three lives.
1. You get a free physical.
Before giving blood, you must get a quick physical to measure your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin levels. After giving blood, a lab takes your blood to do 13 tests for infectious diseases.
2. You will have a balanced iron level
Five grams of iron in the blood is healthy. When you donate a unit of blood, you lose about a quarter of a gram of iron. You regain that iron from the food you eat in the weeks after you donate blood. Having too much iron could affect your blood vessels. Lowering iron may also reduce the risk of a heart attack.
3. The feeling you get knowing you are saving someone’s life.
Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to someone else. It is the gift of life. You become a real-life superhero. It’s a quick, easy way to give back to your community and feel good about yourself!

September is National Preparedness Month which reminds everyone to prepare themselves, their communities and families from now and throughout the year for disasters that could happen. Prepare in advance to any situation by improving your skills such as CPR and first aid.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, is encouraging people to get involved on social media by helping others understand the need to prepare for emergencies. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey left the nation devastated. About 80 percent of households impacted by Hurricane Harvey did not have flood insurance.
The theme of this year's National Preparedness Month is "Disasters Happen, Prepare Now, Learn How." FEMA has releaased a calendar of four events, one per week of the month-long event. Homeowners can take these steps to make sure they are ready for any disaster that might come their way:
Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.
Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.
Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.
Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.

The prices will lower by 50 percent for every pet during this event. The adoption fees for senior pets will be $25, $57.50 for puppies and kittens and $40 for adult dogs and cats.
The pets need a home and there are images and information on adoptable pets on hssaz.org.
