[We pulled this post awhile back due to some complications, but we're happy to announce the Beck show is now officially absolutely back on. Yay!]
Over the weekend, I was trying to think of what the biggest show the Rialto has hosted must be? Maroon 5 in 2004? The White Stripes in 2002? Last year's Vampire Weekend show? Well, you'd have to consider the Beck concert coming to the Rialto on April 23 in the conversation. Performing here as part of the annual scramble to find gigs surrounding the two weekends of Coachella, Beck, who played the Rialto in 2006, is promoting his new album Morning Phase, a melancholy pop record similar in feel to his 2002 album Sea Change.
Rialto members get the first shot at tickets on Wednesday, sales for the hoi polloi starts on Friday at a cost of $43 to $45. Opening act(s) still TBA.

March Radness is tomorrow night (WHAT? SO SOON?), and we're wrapping our previews (hopefully) giving you a taste of what to expect from the stellar lineup of bands.
YACHT are an electro-synth-pop dance act, but there's more to their music than that, as they have a philosophy that drives their music and lives (they wrote a book, have a policy on tattoos of their logo, etc.). But in the end, they're just a lot of fun to listen to and put on a great show, occasionally accompanied by Powerpoint presentations.
Also, learn more about the band in our Nine Questions feature this week. Turns out they hate Big Bang Theory.
See them and a bunch of bands (Sir Mix-A-Lot! Pinback! Murs!) tomorrow night at March Radness, presented by the Tucson Weekly!

It's been eight years since Tool released 10,000, so is it about time they put out a new album? Tool guitarist Adam Jones might have accidently spilled the beans during a meet and greet in Portland and told a fan that the band has finished a new album and should debut later this year, according to Crave Online.
At a pre-show VIP meet & greet in Portland, OR on Thursday afternoon on the band's current tour, guitarist Adam Jones confirmed to our exclusive source that the alien-prog rock maestros' new album is "100% done" and should arrive later this year. Aside from a mention of different time signatures than their previous work, there is no other information to report at the moment. The confirmation is certainly enough to get pulses racing, however.

March Radness is this Saturday, March 8 (get your tickets now!), so we're going to give you a taste of what to expect from the stellar lineup of bands here on The Range between now and then.
Dott are from Galway, Ireland, so since they came all this way, it would be rude not to check them out when they play early at 6:30 at Club Congress, right? The band's brand of sunny, upbeat pop is female-vocal-driven, harmony-laden and sure to appeal to fans of the Pipettes, Best Coast and 90's indie pop acts like Lois. Plus, hand clapping, which is always welcome.

Jalph.Net wants to give you some signed Pizza Underground merchandise, so you personally won't have to push and shove for Macaulay Culkin's John Hancock after the show at 191 Toole on Monday, March 10.
Naturally, all you have to do is take an epic picture of yourself (Photoshop encouraged) with pizza and post it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. But you have to tag it #TUCSONPIZZAPARTY in order to be considered. The top 3 photos selected on Monday at noon. Generation Cool's Slobby Robby will be the official judge.

Nite Jewel, the musical nom-de-plume of Los Angeleno Ramona Gonzalez, sounds like the collision of 90's R&B, Italian disco and krautrock, a blend of influences that sounds a lot like dance music, but generally defies actually dancing, but makes you feel really damn cool for listening to it. The pseudonymed aesthetic moves on to her lyrics, cloaking emotion in enigma and mystery. Hell, Nite Jewel was on the soundtrack from recent super-smash video game Grand Theft Auto V. How cool is that?

PigPen Theatre Company sounds like a super-pretentious band name until you realize that they're not just a band (and a good one), but an actual theater company, notable enough to make it into the New York Times for their performance at a Fringe Festival there. However, even as as part of a second line of work as musicians, their album Bremen, which emerged from a storytelling project, holds up on its own with a indie-folkish twee sound that would appeal to fans of Mumford and Sons or the Decemberists. Their new EP, The Way I'm Running, includes the track, "Crash," which you can watch/listen to above. The group's big harmonies and upbeat charm will likely delight anyone who stumbles upon them Saturday night.

We've been previewing some of the bands you can see at March Radness (ONE WEEK AWAY OMG OMG), but hey, let's give some tickets away, so you can see the show yourself.
Frankly, I'm not entirely sure why you haven't purchased tickets yet...they're only $15, which is what you'd pay to see someone like Iamsu! or YACHT or Pinback anyhow, but you get to see all three and a whole lot more, but hey, people and their decisions can be a mystery.
We'll be giving away tickets in a variety of manners ahead of the show, but first off, we'll give a pair today for tweeting a link to this post or any of our others about March Radness. Just include us (@tucsonweekly) and throw in the hashtag #marchradnesstucson. We'll pull a winner today around 5 pm and notify them via a tweet. If you don't win today, we'll have more tickets to give away every day next week (OR YOU COULD BUY THEM CHEAP-O).
Good luck!

Describing the sound of shape note singing can be difficult. But Paige Winslett, of Tucson Fasola, a group dedicated to the performance of songs drawn from some of the oldest musical traditions in America, gives it her best shot.
“I use words like haunting, unique, and kind of loud, kind of unfamiliar,” Winslett says. “But there’s no way to describe it. I usually suggest people come join us, because it’s not describable.”
Shape note singing has roots in England in the 18th century, but is most commonly associated with Sacred Harp singing, a form of a cappella gospel music associated with rural churches in the late 1700s. Sacred Harp features a special written notation, designating which notes will be sung as fa, sol, la, and mi. The sound of Sacred Harp is otherworldly, utterly mysterious sounding despite its often booming volume. Sacred Harp singing has been documented by sound archivists like Alan Lomax, featured in the 2003 film Cold Mountain, and has been explored on record by experimental band Danielson, songwriter Richard Buckner, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and others.
Tucson Fasola — founded by J.P. Thom-Gronachan in the late ‘90s — performs music Sacred Harp music every first and third Saturday at the Sonora Cohousing Common House. On Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2, the group will host the annual Tucson Sacred Harp Convention. This year, the convention features the third Elder Gerald Hand Memorial Sing, celebrating the life of Gerald Hand, a Sacred Harp singer and Southwestern Baptist preacher. His grandson, Eric Morgan, an Associate Professor at New Mexico State University, travels to Tucson to teach an abbreviated singing school. His morning singing class echoes the way Sacred Harp singing spread across the United States, taught by itinerant singers as they traveled and taught rural, largely unschooled communities how to read from shape note hymnals.
