While I would consider myself a R. Kelly fan, sometimes I don't always feel so good about the overt sexuality of nearly all of his music. Thankfully, someone on an Atlanta gospel TV program provided this "gospel version" take on Kells' "Bump n' Grind." My ears are telling me no, but my soul...my soul is telling me yes.

Sergio Mendoza y la Orkesta topped a bill of Latin-dance bands aimed at giving the fans a workout on the dance floor. Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound and Gabriel Sullivan of Taraf de Tucson sat in, having played their own sets earlier in the evening. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly enjoyed the show from the front of the stage. C. Elliott's photos follow.

Tucson is a great city for a number of reasons, but for me, one of those is that we tend to catch some shows here by musical acts on the rise, especially considering our population and location somewhat in the middle of nowhere. Most music fans who have lived here any significant length of time have their "saw them before they were famous" story, whether it's the series of Green Day shows at the DPC or Arcade Fire at Solar Culture.

The 1975 (from Manchester, a splendid city for music), with a few EPs out now and a full-length coming out next week, will likely be a pretty big deal by the time they get to Club Congress at the end of their tour on November 4th, considering the general hooky appeal of their dance-leaning take on the sort of college rock that appeared on John Hughes soundtracks. Their album is streaming on Soundcloud (above), so take a listen. If you like what you hear, you might want to get tickets for the Congress show now. The odds of being able to walk out night-of-show and get some is basically zero.

Slaid Cleaves finds poetry in humanity, one struggling soul at a time. Accompanied by "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb on guitar, he shared his story songs at a Rhythm and Roots concert on Aug. 28. C. Elliott's photos follow. Find out more about Cleaves and his music in Gene Armstrong's Tucson Weekly feature, Songs and Stories.

With more than 25 players onstage at at Stubbs BBQ, an outdoor arena the size of a football field , Polyphonic Spree debuted at SXSW in March, 2003, less than a week before the U.S. invaded Iraq. Song by song their performance elevated what was then a multitude of stressed out, disagreeable music fans, all concerned, one way or another, for their county. By the end of the set, if they hadn't achieved Nirvana, they at least had found their happier selves, the selves that smile and wave their arms, and appreciate that their fellow humans can feel the same.

Chelsea Wolfe, the subject of this week's music feature and part of HoCo Fest's Sunday finale with Scout Niblett and others, has a new album out on September 3. There's always that awkward moment when a musician starts trotting out their new material, despite the fact that you haven't heard it yet, but thankfully, you can avoid that issue by listening to Pain Is Beauty on Pitchfork Advance now. Plus there's a weird looping visual thing going on. It'll be like watching a new David Lynch film.

Earlier this year, former Smiths frontman Morrissey performed a show in Hollywood High School's auditorium, selling out the 1,800 seats in 12 seconds and delighting his shrieking fans by playing a stack of his hits like “Everyday Is Like Sunday” and “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side.” The Loft Cinema has been kind enough to bring some joy to the lives of some generally sad people wearing black clothes by screening the filmed version of that show this Saturday at 9 p.m. Plus, Zia Records will be there giving stuff away, so if you're cash-strapped and need a new copy of Viva Hate, this could be the best of all scenarios.

As a Morrissey bonus, you should really read Chuck Klosterman's article from 2002 in Spin (available on Google Books), where he examined the phenomenon of Moz's heavily Latino fanbase in Southern California. As someone who attended a Jaguares/Morrissey double bill in Anaheim ages ago, it's definitely a fascinating subculture.

true_music_festival.jpg

It's not entirely uncommon for someone to start talking about launching a music festival and refer to it as an Arizona version of Coachella. The Country Thunder folks floated that idea with a proposed Liquid Sol Festival, which is theoretically happening on November 2nd at University of Phoenix Stadium according to their website, but doesn't have a lineup or anything.

More recently, there's the True Music Festival, using the not-at-all-ambitious tagline "One Day Will Change Everything." They ran some super-vague YouTube videos and such, so it really did seem like TMF wouldn't get to the "actually announcing a lineup" stage, but today, they have come through with at least some headliners, even if those headliners seemingly have nothing in common other than performing music for money.

So, on December 14 at Salt River Fields, you should be able to see Bassnectar, the Flaming Lips, Wiz Khalifa, Capital Cities and Lord Huron. No ticket information yet, but the festival organizers do promise that more acts are to come.

Chicha Dust - Como un Ave from Bryce Myhre on Vimeo.

Apparently it isn't "officially" available yet since the release date is listed as September 7, the same day as their show at Club Congress, but the new Chicha Dust album, Live at the Dust Ballroom, is on Bandcamp now for your digital enjoyment.

“¡Live At The Dust Ballroom!” was recorded on June 9th, 2013 at the Wildcat Storage Facilities in Tucson, AZ. In the true fashion of our band we decided that throwing a party with our friends and family was the only way to capture the energy and passion that live in these songs. We brought a recording and video setup into an empty warehouse and threw a Tucson cumbia party. All of these songs are covers from the Roots of Chicha compilation and are the songs that we built this band on. We hope you dig em! ¡Viva Tucson! ¡Viva Cumbia! ¡Viva Chicha!

Listen to the album, via Bandcamp's preview player, below the cut.
