Dave and Kara Stricker are a couple splitting their time between Portland, Oregon and Tucson. Their songs are inspired by the intimacy and playfulness of the Dave and Kara’s relationship.

Dave, an inductee of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, has a long history of musical performance with the Dave Sticker Band, the artists behind The Westin Song.

Kara found her voice jamming with Dave for the first time on their honeymoon.

Maroon 5 will be performing at the 2019 Super Bowl LIII Pepsi halftime show on Feb. 3 at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Guest appearances for the performance have not been chosen, but there are speculations of potential artists.

Maroon 5’s recent single “Girls Like You” features Cardi B and is currently No. 2 on The Hot 100 list on Billboard, leaving us to wonder if the Bodak Yellow superstar and new mom will be at the Super Bowl.

The NFL faced a challenge this year in choosing a performer due to the controversy involving Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback whose decision to take a knee during the National Anthem for protest caused controversy and outrage throughout the United States, recently highlighted by the Nike campaign.

Last year, there were reports that Jay-Z turned down an offer to perform at the Super Bowl to show support for Kaepernick. So this year, the Super Bowl had speculations for who the halftime performer should be.

One of the toughest challenges for choosing a halftime performer isn’t just the appeal to the audience, but finding an artist who hasn’t already performed. Maroon 5 is more similar to recent performers like Justin Timberlake than to the more polarizing choices such as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, we love you Left Shark.

Halftime Show Performers at the Super Bowl since 2008:

2008: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
2009: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2010: The Who
2011: The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash
2012: Madonna, LMFAO, Cirque de Soleil, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Cee Lo Green, Andy Lewis
2013: Beyoncé, Destiny's Child
2014: Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers
2015: Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott
2016: Coldplay, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Gustavo Dudamel
2017: Lady Gaga
2018: Justin Timberlake

The word “noise” comes from the Latin for “nausea,” and in a sense both words dominate this formerly-indie-rock trio’s new studio album. I say formerly because, from Double Negative’s first moments, with a repetitive wall of throbbing electronic distortion, audiences can tell the band has made a clear change toward the avant-garde.

Low’s new album would come as a surprise from any band, but especially from one celebrating its 25th anniversary, and one coming from a band credited as laying the groundwork for the “slowcore” genre.

Since their inception, Low has released numerous albums of gloomy, minimal indie rock. Double Negative, however, offers almost no rock sounds at all; the vast ambient soundscapes, the warped and glitched vocals, and the industrial rhythms strip away all identity.

Take the track “Tempest” for instance, where frontman Alan Sparhawk’s vocals are distorted such that they barely retain any human sound, much less recognizable words. Many songs have this quality, where the band uselessly attempts to scream over the blistering swells of noise, like trying to outrun an ever-closer monster in a dream.

This is not to say Low leaves no room for relief. Many tracks contain interludes where frontwoman Mimi Parker’s soft voice sweeps over icy piano keys before being swallowed up again. The track “Dancing and Fire” offers the most respite in the album’s bleak landscape, with post-rock guitar strumming shining like the sun after a deluge.

For such an overt album, it appears to only be this way in form, not in function. Because while track for track it can feel darkly overwhelming, it is, at least according to the band, a deeply political album. The ominous and surreal compositions on Double Negative were inspired by the Trump presidency, and when the lyrics are intelligible, they occasionally speak of war, confusion and longing. As Sparhawk puts it, “You don't know what you're even fighting for”.

Fans of Portishead might notice some similarities to the album Third. In that the band completely changes their sound into a more difficult and cryptic direction, trying the audience’s patience with moments of outright drone and experimentation. It is dense, but it is gorgeous.

For a synecdoche of the entire album, listen to the middle stretch of “Dancing and Blood”. Sparhawk’s and Parker’s voices give way to a cold, lonely guitar dissolving into digital artifacts, all the while a martial drumbeat steadily thumps along in the background, accompanied by electronic hisses.

This dissonant, sombre, and hypnotic album is like being crushed to death by a beautiful glacier.

Double Negative was released by Sub Pop Records on Sept. 14.

June West celebrates the release of her self-titled debut at Exo Roast Co., on Thursday, Sept. 13.

With a doe-like spirit and a keen eye set on self-examination, June West chronicles stories of both deep loss and contentment and creates a reflecting pool of her life.

“The release of this album is a big milestone for me as a human trying to find my purpose,” West says. “The greatest lesson has been about how people across communities are generously willing to step up and help me realize my ideas because they believe in what I do.” Which serves as fuel for West to persist through the challenges of being an artist.

Drawing influence equally from the present day (artists like Natalie Prass and Angel Olsen) and the past (godmothers Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones who helped pave the way), West is a practitioner in flux. “The newer songs have been more deliberately evocative of soul and R&B, which has always resonated with me.”

Upon entrance, delicate and dreamlike, partially hidden from view, June West is an album that reveals its secret gardens with each listen. Here are a few highlights.

Finnish Folk Duo Release Tucson-recorded Debut Album
Courtesy Photo

Tuomo & Markus released their debut album, Dead Circles, to American audiences today. The folk duo recorded the album at the WaveLab Recording Studios in Tucson with the help of Joey Burns, John Convertino and Jacob Valenzuela of Calexico, as well as John Stirratt and Pat Sansone from Wilco.

Hailing from Helsinki, the duo is made up of jazz/soul musician Tuomo Prättälä and singer/songwriter Markus Nordenstreng. Making music described as “Nordic Americana,” Tuomo & Markus say their influences are songwriters like Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Dead Circles features vocal harmonies between Tuomo and Markus, mixed in with meticulous folk instrumentation. The Tucson-influence is clear: driving rhythms and droning organs. But the upbeat, Scandinavian vocals differentiate the album from being explicitly in the desert folk-rock scene.

Although the album originally released in Scandinavia in 2016, today marks the first time Dead Circles is released on a North American record label, Schoolkids Records. This release comes ahead of a North American tour this December.

For more information, stream the album on Spotify or visit SchoolKidsRecords.com
