Mondays are not typically known to be a party day, but we're not living in typical times.

DJ Jahmar International of DJs Against Hunger will be live-streaming a two-hour DJ set tonight, Monday, June 29 on his Facebook page, featuring the best reggae and hip hop known to the human race in an effort to help Tucson's homeless community obtain COVID-19 masks.

"I was inspired to do this event because I saw a need since the homeless community was not mentioned during most news interviews and stories didn’t mention how people were helping the homeless," DJ Jahmar said.

The DJ has personally purchased several dozen masks for the homeless community and is working with masksfortucson.org to acquire more. So far, the group has donated over 300 masks to DJ Jahmar's cause.

Tonight's show starts at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature Dj L3XX and Emato Johnson helping DJ Jahmar keep the party going. All proceeds will be donated to purchase masks for the homeless, DJ Jahmar said.

The musical magic in Oro Valley isn’t calling it quits anytime soon, so pack your camping chairs and head on over to The Gaslight Music Hall for a night of live tunes, laughter and delicious pizza.

The music hall’s drive-in concert series continues through the summer, and the venue recently announced two weeks of shows.

"We have been hearing from so many of our guests how lucky they feel that they can keep enjoying live music in a safe environment,” said Music Hall General Manager Heather Stricker. “Many reach out with requests, which we have been trying to accommodate. That is how we found one of our new favorite bands, Backroads Country. Look for them again in a few weeks.”

Kicking things off this Tuesday, June 23 is The Best of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Hear all your favorite hits, including “Born in the Bayou,” “Fortunate Son,” “Proud Mary,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Green River” and plenty more. This rockstar group stars longtime Gaslight actor (and crowd favorite) Mike Yarema.

The following night, The Desert Divas take the stage. This fabulous force pays tribute to rock, soul and rhythm and blues greats from the ’60s to the ’80s, including The Rolling Stones, Patti LaBelle, the Temptations, Carole King, Joan Jett, Prince and more.

“Some groups, such as The Desert Divas, weren't ready to perform indoors yet, and are thrilled to join us in this outdoor concert series to entertain their many fans in this area,” Stricker said.

Wrapping things up next week on Thursday, June 25 is The Mr. Skynyrd Band.

“Mr. Skynyrd is, without question, the hottest Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band out there today,” Stricker said. “With a collection of uncompromising, experienced musicians, their two-hour show is dedicated to delivering spot-on renditions of those classic Lynyrd Skynyrd hits.”

The fun doesn’t stop next week; the Gaslight has already booked shows through June and into July.

Closing out the month on Tuesday, June 30 is classic rock night with Five Way Street, a group composed of “seasoned musicians all with a love for classic rock.” According to Stricker, the band offers a high-energy, fun-filled visit back to those formative days “when Baby Boomers were discovering how good rock and roll could really be.”

Instead of bringing in an outside band for the July 2 and 3 shows, the Music Hall is calling in local legend (and gaslight regular) Armen Dirtadian and the internationally-touring Manhattan Dolls for a patriotic celebration concert.

Backed up by a world-class band, attendees will be inspired by rousing renditions of flag-waving favorites such as “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and many more.

“This musical salute to freedom and liberty will be dedicated to those who've defended it,” Stricker said. “You won't want to miss an evening that's sure to make you proud to be an American.”

All shows begin at 7 p.m.

With safety in mind, the music hall sections off over 100 spaces of the parking lot, brings in a portable stage and uses an FM radio transmitter to broadcast the show to attendees. The music hall is also rolling out a limited pizza menu with no-touch delivery off a tray. Diners will place an order ahead of time so the kitchen knows what to make. Attendees can sit in truck beds or in chairs they bring, or in their vehicle and listen to the radio transmitter.

“We have come together with Scotty Plumber, who sets up our stage, Marshall Jones, who is hooking us up with outdoor sound, and Mike Quatraro, who runs the professional video on our large projection screen,” Stricker said. “Customers love getting pizza and popcorn to enjoy the show. Seeing our regulars smiling in their comfy lawn chairs or in the bed of their trucks with their dogs, singing along to great music, makes all of the hard work absolutely worth it. If you haven't been to one of these shows yet, you are seriously missing out.”

There will be one public restroom available in the music hall for emergencies only which will be cleaned between customer uses.

Tickets to the Gaslight Music Hall’s drive-in concert shows cost $30 per vehicle. A pizza service is available for an additional fee. Season passes and gift cards will not be accepted. All sales are final.

If the event is rained out, ticket holders will be notified of a rescheduled time.

Playing Tuesday, June 16, The Sonoran Dogs formed in 2011. Since then, they’ve toured across the Southwestern United States, and even as far as Melbourne, Australia. According to the group’s bio, The "Dogs" are made up of seasoned veterans “who have come together to enjoy bluegrass music and friendship, oftentimes adding one or more ‘strays’ on fiddle, dobro, and even accordion.”

The group’s expertise is on display no matter what they play, which includes improvising and original songs spanning traditional and contemporary music as well as an eclectic mix of Bluegrass, Folk, Americana, Celtic, and Newgrass.

The following day, Wednesday, June 17, OnesAll Band takes the stage. The group is composed of Kathi McKay, Jordan and John Stafford, Kent Baker, and Abel Salgado. Jordan started the group when he was 17, and the band is considered “a true labor of love.”

When they play, expect hits from Average White Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson Heart, and more.

Keep the party rolling at The Gaslight Music Hall, where the show has moved into the parking lot over the last few weeks after founder Tony Terry launched his newest production: The drive-in concert series.

The ongoing drive-in concert series is the Gaslight’s way of keeping their customers entertained (and their employees working) during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to general manager Heather Stricker.

“Tony Terry, owner of The Gaslight Music Hall, loved the idea of outdoor concerts. Once the sun goes down, the weather is beautiful and the parking lot is full of live, awesome music,” Stricker said. “We knew we would have to cancel our Dance Parties for the summer to abide with the social distancing requirements, so we have invited a lot of our dance bands to come perform in this drive-in concert series. We feature different genres of music every week, there is always something for everybody.”

Are you ready to rock? How about some swing dancing? Luckily, the Gaslight Music Hall has both queued up next month when Backroads Country Band and Vinyl Tap! perform in the drive-in concert series June 10 and 11, respectively.

“We have never had Backroads Country Band at the Gaslight Music Hall, but so many of their fans have reached out to us so we knew we had to have them on June 10 for all of our country music fans,” said Gaslight general manager Heather Stricker. “And on June 11, we bring back one of our most popular dance bands, Vinyl Tap! We are so excited to keep bringing Oro Valley and Tucson live music in this difficult time. We are committed to keeping the entertainment going."

Billed as “The Ultimate Country Cover Band,” Backroads Country Band plays No. 1 hits from the biggest names in country, like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt, Brooks and Dunn, and all the way to today’s hits from Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Sam Hunt, Old Dominion, Florida Georgia Line, Zac Brown Band and more.

Just because venues are closed doesn’t mean live shows aren’t taking place, and The Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley is on a tear this summer, hosting several concerts a week in its parking lot.

This week’s shows, featuring Mr. Boogie Woogie Trio and The Tributaries, are already sold out, so the Gaslight is already selling tickets to the next round of concerts: The Rillito River Band and the George Howard Motown & Soul Band.

"We at the Gaslight Music Hall are overwhelmed and delighted at the amazing response to our new outdoor drive-in concert series,” said Gaslight General Manager Heather Stricker. “To see a community come together to support our small, local business and enjoy live music again in these unusual times is truly remarkable.”

The Rillito River Band, which plays Wednesday, June 3, is composed of longtime Tucson residents with musical roots including rock n’ roll, folk-rock, and folk. Their influences range from mariachi to Cream, from James Taylor to The Cure, and from The Beatles to Kris Kristofferson ( all of which you may hear at a show).

On the heels of a pair of impressive performances this week, the Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley is hosting another two drive-in concerts next Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, May 27, Mr. Boogie Woogie Trio will play. The group, according to Gaslight manager, performer, public relations rep, and booker Heather Stricker, is a “hard-driving, old school, New Orleans style rhythm and blues’ group complemented by Boogie Woogie, “the fastest, flashiest, piano-thumping boogie man from the Netherlands.”

“Yes, that’s right,” Stricker told Tucson Local Media. “This Dutch-based, drive-by piano player hits hard and will take no prisoners. As soon as he starts pounding the ivories, you’ll be on your way to the Land of Good Times.”

For many musicians and performers out of work due to COVID-19, virtual performances have served as a mild bandage. But while performing in front of webcams may help ease the quarantine time, it doesn't replicate the community engagement found around Tucson’s stages and venues. But in recent weeks, a community of artists have worked to develop an online variety show, not only to get money in the pockets of local artists and businesses, but to rekindle the spirit of Tucson’s art.

Tucson Helping Tucson hosts a weekly livestream to “foster virtual community connections” and raise money for locals in need. The artists who perform on the show get paid, and the show also raises donations for a Revolving Loan and Grant Fund operated by the Community Investment Corporation for small businesses. So far, Tucson Helping Tucson has distributed more than $200,000, helping 80 businesses and paying 35 artists, according to its website.

“When it became very apparent that our small businesses were going to be suffering, the idea popped in my head that we’d have a lot of artists out of work and businesses that need help, and we could potentially stimulate the creative class to provide a fundraising mechanism for the business community,” said Tom Heath of Nova Home Loans, who helped organize the movement.

THT’s weekly livestream, hosted by Frank Powers, is a collaboration with Brink Media, Local First Arizona and the Tucson Metro Chamber that showcases local musicians, artists and entrepreneurs, who get paid for their time on-air.

Now five weeks into their show, THT has hosted local musicians like Gabriel Sullivan, Seanloui and Miss Olivia & The Interlopers, as well as standup comedians, local teachers and business owners.

Following last week’s sold-out performance by The Tributaries, the Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley is expanding this week’s drive-in concert to two shows.

This Wednesday, May 20, and Thursday, May 21, the music hall will host FLG Frank Lopez Group - A Tribute to Santana. The Tucson-based band is composed of musicians dedicated to authentically presenting the music of the Grammy Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician.

According to the group’s bio: “They pride themselves on giving audiences an authentic, Latin flavor that is accentuated with the motifs and signatures of Santana that have become familiar to audiences worldwide.”

The drive-in show will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30. The Gaslight moved the shows back half an hour to lessen the time spent in the summer sun. Tickets are $25 per vehicle. A pizza and snack package is available at the time of reservation and delivered to the vehicle.

Attendees can sit in truck beds or sit in chairs, or in the vehicle and listen to the FM radio transmitter. Performances are broadcast on 102.9 FM. No season passes or gift cards will be accepted at shows, and all sales are final. There is a 24-hour cancelation policy.
