Black Cat Vintage pays tribute to Tucson Modernism Week
  • Black Cat Vintage pays tribute to Tucson Modernism Week

Black Cat Vintage at 41 N. Tucson Blvd. has done some great/fun window displays in the past, but store owner Claudine Villardito has gone above and beyond this time, recreating the look from the grand opening of Jacome's downtown department store in 1951 as part of the third year of Tucson Modernism Week, which kicks off on Friday.

A beloved destination for locals, ranchers and tourists, Jacome’s Department Store made history when it opened a three-level retail complex directly across from competitor Steinfeld’s Department Store in 1951. The grand opening was so eagerly awaited that customers filled the streets of downtown and brought traffic to a standstill. The display window will recreate the moment the doors were opened and throngs of Tucsonans flooded the building.

“My goal is to give onlookers the feeling that they are among the crowds in the store on opening day,” said Villardito, who used original Jacome’s display fixtures, mannequins, photos and ephemera to populate the window. “People have been so generous in lending me their keepsakes for this project; it reminds me what a big heart Tucson still has, just like in 1951.”

Earlier on at my time here at the Weekly, I lamented that somehow the internet had not seemingly captured a JJ, (THE OWNER AND) the King of Beepers ad somewhere in the cloud of online nonsense.

Well, while we're still far away from a true archive of the JJ Era, guy-who-makes-movies Adam Ray has uploaded at least one ad to YouTube for our collective enjoyment. Activation, of course, required.

Tucson is the home to one of the most prolific cartoonists in the industry. It won't be until Max Cannon is worm chow when we truly appreciate the genius that is Red Meat. Thankfully, the man with a van is celebrating his birthday today.

Max has been graciously giving us a weekly comic strip for the last 25 years. Since it's almost impossible to give him a gift that will measure up to the pain and joy he has given us, all he will get from the Weekly offices is this blog post. I don't know if Max knows this or not, but he was one of the reasons why I picked up this paper. Honestly, I don't know if I would be here if it weren't for him.

It's an honor to call him a friend and colleague.

Happy Birthday, Max.

Local filmmakers Charles Lynch and Nathan Lee are in the local craft beer business, and business is booming. The latest episode of Hopped Up highlights Tap & Bottle, 403 N 6th Ave #135. Lynch interviews the downtown bottle shop owners Rebecca and Scott, and talks to Vickee and Sarah of Girls' Pint Out.

The votes have been counted, and Downtown Tucson bested all in "Tucson's Top 10 Neighborhoods Renters Love Most," according to an article posted today on The Huffington Post. "Downtown Tucson is where Southwestern culture meets modern amenities." The urban hub is described as the "perfect neighborhood for the culture vulture — music, museums, restaurants and shops are everywhere you look," and was cited for its effort to weave Tucson's history as a functional part of the city's current day-to-day activities.

Before you get too excited or defensive by this Top 10 Neighborhoods list, keep in mind it was based on searches on the ApartmentGuide.com website. That said, here's the ranking, which technically are areas of town, not neighborhoods:

1. Downtown Tucson
2. Central Tucson
3. Northwest Tucson
4. Catalina Foothills
5. Eastside
6. University of Arizona Campus
7. Winterhaven
8. Starr Pass
9. Broadway/Pantano East
10. South Tucson

Here's a rundown of the article's specific mentions for each area of town.

1. Downtown Tucson: The usual suspects, including Hotel Congress, John Dillinger (Days), the Children's Museum, the (forthcoming) Modern Streetcar, restaurants, etc.

2. Central Tucson: The classic Broadway Village Shopping Center, Central Tucson Gallery Association and its First Saturdays art walk (though on hiatus during July/August), and the Third Street/University Bicycle Boulevard.

3. Northwest Tucson Uh, Mansfield Park is mentioned. That's about it. I guess the people who live up on Oracle Rd., Orange Grove and Ina use another site? Or maybe just those free booklets you pick up in the front of Circle K's and grocery stores?

4. Catalina Foothills: So many hiking/search-and-rescue opportunities, including Sabino Canyon, Bear Canyon, Pima Canyon and Ventana Canyon. DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun and Tanque Verde's restaurant row get plugs.

5. Eastside: Uh, Case Park. Help HuffPo out in the comments.

6. University of Arizona Campus: I think you can guess where this one is going...

7. Winterhaven: Someone decided to make this "Winter Haven," which is probably the copy editor's fault. Predictably mentions the annual Festival of Lights and its retirees.

8. Starr Pass: "Hotspot for cyclists," with great views, including Tucson Mountain Park, Saguaro National Park, great resorts, including JW Marriott Resort & Spa. Doesn't exactly help keep the rent down.

9. Broadway/Pantano East: Shout outs to Jesse Owens Park, Harold Steele Elementary (check out the Comic Sans-filled web page!), and back for food at the Jesse Owens Park Farmer's Market.

10. South Tucson: Besides Mexican restaurants, HuffPo includes Santa Rosa Park, Santa Rita Park and the Native American community. Probably code for "CASINOS ARE NEARBY!!!"

What are some of the glaring neighborhood highlights that Atlanta resident and author Courtney Craig missed in this article? Please let us know in the comments.

She’s a living local icon who seems to get better with every year—36 to this day, to be exact. It’s Lupita Murillo, a KVOA nightly news mainstay since 1978, when she moved here from KRGV-TV in Weslaco, TX. She was South Texas’ first Hispanic female in broadcasting at the time, and continues to produce award-winning investigative reporting on border issues, frequently appearing on national NBC broadcasts.

Murillo, whose thick-accented segment sign-offs may be as well-known and loved in this town as the old Gordo’s or Szechuan Omei commercials, has come a long way from her beginnings as a buttoned-down, reserved cub reporter. Earlier this month she was featured prominently on “Mystery on Sunrise Drive,” Dateline’s two-hour special on the 1996 Gary Triano murder case, in which Triano’s ex-wife was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to life behind bars.

Next month, however, Murillo will be behind a different kind of bar (sorry, couldn’t resist), as she serves up cocktails at The Coronet to benefit the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. Murillo and SAAF Executive Director Wendell Hicks will be your “Startenders” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at Fourth Avenue’s coolest new patio destination. “Coolest,” not only for the Coronet’s Old World European-inspired ambiance, but for the oscillating misting fans that actually work.

Last week, we celebrated Throwback Thursday with Sir Paul McCartney a day after his 72nd Birthday. Daniel Buckley, veteran journalist and filmmaker, shared a charming photo of himself and the legendary Dolly Parton on his Facebook page. He was kind enough to allow me to share it on The Range.

The photo was taken 34 years old when Buckley was a reporter for the long gone music tabloid, News Real.

Buckley said he hated getting his picture taken with musicians he was interviewing, but Dolly wasn't just any musician. “I was backstage with Dolly and she pulled me by the waist and demanded that we take a picture together,” Buckley said. “I couldn't refuse a picture The Dolly Parton.”

Here’s the dapper 27-year-old Buckley and beautiful Dolly Parton. After the jump, of course:

Sir Paul McCartney hasn't forgotten about Tucson, you guys. In honor of Throwback Thursday, the legendary Beatles member tweeted a photo of himself cutting into his Birthday cake backstage at the Tucson Convention Center. McCartney says this picture was taken on June 18, 1976 during the "Wings Over America" tour.

Those of you might know Josh Levine as that guy that writes about the live music scene for the Weekly, or the guy in Hairspray Fire and Girls. Levine was a guest on Nick PrevenasSideStreets tumblr podcast. You might hear yourself talking in the background because interview took place in the smoking patio at Che's Lounge.
From psych revival to garage rock to hip hop to metal, Josh covers it all and he’s as enthusiastic and passionate about what’s happening in Tucson as anyone. Josh is a really sharp dude and this interview made me even more hopeful about our local music scene.

Click here to listen to the show. Just keep in mind that the actual interview doesn't start until 12-minute mark.

It's five o'clock somewhere, and it's always time to drink at the Surly Wench Pub.

The Wench is celebrating its 10-year anniversary of geek nights, art shows, air hockey, burlesques, manly manlesque, dance nights, live concerts, booze, friends and everything in between. So in honor of the decade of party, the Wench slapped together this nostalgic YouTube video of its tattooed patrons.
