"I am a curious and friendly girl who loves going on walks!"
- Caddy

Caddy is a 1-year-old girl who can’t wait to meet her forever family! She already knows how to sit and other basic commands. Caddy would do best in a home without small pets like pocket pets, birds, or cats.

Bring your family, dogs included, to meet Caddy at HSSA Main Campus at 635 W. Roger Rd. Have questions? Give an adoptions counselor a call at 520-327-6088, ext. 173.

All these cuties need homes!
This weekend couldn't be more perfect if you are looking to bring home a new dog or cat. Not only is it PetSmart's National Adoption Weekend, but PACC is also fit to burst.

PACC currently has 438 dogs and puppies and 225 cats and kittens, which is the most animals that the Center has had all year.

“Our summer intake spike came later than usual this year,” said PACC Director of Animal Services Kristen Auerbach in a press release. “The volume of animals is tough for us, but means a great selection of puppies, dogs, cats and kittens for our fosters and adopters. Whatever kind of pet you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it at PACC now.”

PACC is open seven days a week for adoptions and fosters, but this weekend, starting today and running through Sept. 17, the center is participating in PetSmart Charities National Adoption weekend. This means that adoption fees for dogs and cats are waived at local PetSmart locations and at the main shelter, at 4000 N. Silverbell Road.

All pets adopted from PACC come spayed or neutered, with vaccinations, microchip and one free  vet visit. Dogs require a 19 dollar licensing fee.

The new baby tamandua born at the Reid Park Zoo.
Today the Reid Park Zoo announced there is a new baby at the zoo.

The little one doesn't have a name yet, but is a male tamandua. His parents, 12-year-old Lety and 15-year-old Santiago welcomed their son on Aug. 31. The baby weighed 420 grams (0.9 pounds), a healthy weight for baby tamanduas.

The baby is not visible to the public yet and is spending important time bonding with his mom.

“He has been doing great,” said Katie Hutchinson, Lead Keeper at Reid Park Zoo. “He has been staying pretty close to mom by climbing onto her back and has been very curious about his environment.”

Tamanduas are a genus of anteaters and live in a variety of habitats, ranging from gallery forests next to savannas and lowland, to mountainous tropical rainforests. They eat ants and termites and don't have any teeth. Tamanduas have a long, sticky tongue that scoops up to 9,000 ants per day!

Updates about the new baby tamandua will be posted on the Reid Park Zoo Facebook page.

Practice Space Needed for Tucson Musical Canine Freestyle Club
Tucson Canine Freestyle Facebook Page
Members of the Tucson Musical Canine Freestyle Club performing one of their dances together.
The Tucson Musical Canine Freestyle Club is looking for a practice space for three hours once a week.

The club began in 2004 with about 12 people and their dogs. Behaviors, such as 'sit' and 'jump' are incorporated into 2-3 minute dance that emphasizes the bond between the canine and their handler. Janet Bain has been involved in the club since 2004 and has taught multiple dogs how to freestyle.

"Dogs can learn how to freestyle at any age," said Bain, "with gentle means, they will learn quicker."

Bain is a strong believer in using a clicker, a device that is used to train dogs. It makes a loud clicking noise and is meant to be used when the dog is doing the correct behavior- such as sit.

The club performs at retirement homes, for the Make A Wish Foundation, The United Way and many more. This year they will have the opportunity to compete at the WCFO Southwest Salsa National Competition. This is an event sponsored by the World Canine Freestyle Organization.

This year the event will be held in Tucson, at the Double Tree Suites Hotel by Hilton near the Tucson airport at 7051 S. Tucson Blvd. The event will be on November 2 and 3 from 8-4 p.m. and is a free event. Anyone is welcome but dogs are prohibited to avoid distractions for the performing canines.

Although it is a fun experience, the most satisfying part for Bain is knowing that her and her dog have such a close connection that they are able to perform and show off their love for each other.

"The most important things is it celebrates the bond between the dog and their handler through music and dance," said Bain.

Bain has not decided if she will be competing yet as she is a fan of demos over competitions.

Tucson Musical Canine Freestyle Club had used the same practice space for 10 years but after the economic downturn, it became more difficult to find a practice space, according to club organizers. They jumped from a bowling alley to a dog training center to a church.

Currently, the club practices at a church who is charging a small fee for their usage. The church space is 1200 square feet but does not have air conditioning or carpet. The competition ring is 2,400 square feet with carpet floors and air conditioning. Although the church is not the perfect practice center, club organizers said they are grateful that the church is letting them utilize their space until they find bigger practice space.

Bain and the Freestyle Club are still looking for a larger place to practice. They would prefer it to be 40 x 60 square feet, with carpet flooring and air conditioning. They are also looking for a place with reasonable rates as they are not paid for demos. If anyone interested has an available space you can contact Janet Bain by email at [email protected]

Popeye Needs a Home

Popeye the Dog

Popeye is a 1-year-old boy who didn't like spending time in his kennel so he gets to wait for his forever family while enjoying time in a foster home. His foster family says he is very sweet and smart.

He loves to cuddle on the couch and play fetch with his tennis ball. Popeye would be happy as an only dog or with the company of a female dog. He will do best in a home without small animals or children.

Give an adoptions counselor a call at 520-327-6088, ext. 173 and ask how you can meet Popeye.
