Now that the warm weather is here to stay, Tucson's lizards are reemerging and are back to their usual habits of sunbathing on rocks and scurrying across sidewalks ahead of passerby. This lizard was found scrambling around outside of the Arizona State Museum on Friday, April 15 and struck a brief pose.

Find yourself some kitties to cuddle! You can't have these guys, though. They're mine.
Pet lovers, clear your schedule for Saturday. Every local pet adoption agency you can think of (from the Pima Animal Care Center to Any Rat Rescue) will be at the Tucson Expo Center (3750 E. Irvington Road) for Adopt Love, Adopt Local.
More than 30,000 pets enter our local shelters each year, but sadly all may not find a new home. Adopt Love Adopt Local, an initiative of the Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare, aims to solve this issue by connecting adopters with a collaboration of local shelters and rescues to increase adoptions and awareness. Through research, education, and an annual, community-wide adoption event we intend for every displaced companion pet in our community, to have a happy, forever home.
The event is this Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organizers ask that you do not bring your pets to the event. You can get a look at the full list of exhibitors on the
Adopt Love, Adopt Local website.

Hi I'm Shrimpie!
I'm a 1.5 year old female dog who was found as a stray.
If you see me in the shelter I might look a little scared but I warm up to people and love to be pet.
I get passed over in my kennel because I'm a pit bull but I think I deserve a home just as much as any other dog.
If you're looking for a loyal and gentle dog please consider opening your heart and home to me.
Lots of love from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona,
Shrimpie (822145)

Spring has sprung, which means the world will soon be filled with new kittens and puppies—many of whom will, one way or another, find their way to an animal shelter.
To make room for these impending new arrivals, Pima Animal Care Center is waiving adoption fees for the last six days of March on animals 6 months and older.
From the press release:
“We’re approaching the time of year when we can take in more than 60 pets a day,” said Justin Gallick, executive director of community engagement at PACC.
Free adoptions will be honored at PACC’s shelter, 4000 N. Silverbell Road, and its four offsite PetSmart adoption centers, where they have cats and kittens available for adoption seven days a week. While this special only applies to pets ages 6 months and up, folks can still get half-off puppies and kittens if they sport UA gear. Their normal adoption fee is $50 without the discount.
As always, all adopted pets will come spayed or neutered, with age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip and a free vet visit, too. A standard $16 license fee applies to all adult dogs.
See the list of adoptable dogs and cats on PACC’s webpage.
Fees are waived starting Friday, March 24 so spend Thursday talking your spouse/landlord/mom into the idea, and then go find someone to love.

Hi I'm Penelope, the pocket pitty!
I'm still living in the shelter and it's been over 3 months!
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona staff cannot believe that I haven't been adopted, I'm the sweetest little girl and love to give nice kisses.
Don't forget that I'm deaf so I need a home who understands that I'm a little different from other dogs. But I still give lots of love!
Please come adopt me today!
Lots of love,
Penelope (818382)

I have recently transitioned to using reusable grocery bags exclusively. I've been wanting to do it for some time now, but have been concerned with what to do with my cats' waste. You see, my family has always reused plastic grocery bags to dispose of used kitty litter. Now that my grocery bag hoarding days are over, a new question arises: How can I be both a sustainable person AND a pet owner?
Unfortunately, the answer is more complicated than I had hoped.
It turns out that most of the clay-based kitty litters my family has been using for years is collected through
strip mining, a notoriously environmentally unfriendly process. Though there are more eco-friendly products on the market, they are expensive and often rejected by picky pets. As unpleasant as it sounds, the consensus seems to be that the safest place for used litter is a landfill.
But there is always the option of flushing solid pet waste down the toilet, right? Well, yes and no.
