On Saturday, March 5, Fit Fest Tucson will take over the Reid Park Zoo for a night of good ol' fashioned community involvement. The fest will not only raise money for important Zoo endeavors, but also general fitness awareness in the Old Pueblo.
Licensed and certified fitness instructors from across Arizona will teach a laundry list of exercise classes, ranging from more popularized fitness regimens such as P90X, yoga and Zumba, to newer ones like PiYo and Turbo Kick. Fit Fest offers attendees a range of low and high impact workouts so everyone can participate—meaning, don't be discouraged to attend if you can't run in and out of Sabino Canyon in an hour.

All ticket-sale proceeds will fund the Zoo's construction of a new Animal Health Center that's been in the works since May 2014. The new center will be around 7,500 square feet and update the Zoo's current resources to reflect current veterinary technologies and standards. New technological additions include a surgical suite, intensive care unit and diagnostic laboratory, to name a few.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 2 to 14 pre-sale, and $25 at the door. Find more info and grab your tickets here

Pets are an essential part of many people’s lives and every furry friend comes with a love story.

Holidays like Christmas and Valentines Day are especially popular times for people to gift a pet. But before you go picking out a pup, it’s crucial to analyze your life conditions and situation. Is your life stable enough to care for a pet? What is your home space like? How much time do you have to care for this animal?

Justin Gallick, the live release manager at Pima Animal Care Center, says “it’s not uncommon to have someone come into the shelter thinking they want a large breed puppy, only to find out they don’t have time and live in an apartment. Then they realize they need a 14-pound Chihuahua.”

Another thing to consider: It’s common in these gift-giving times to go through a breeder or a pet store—but a shelter might be holding the pet of your dreams.

Shelters sometimes have a stigma of the “unwanted” pet—one that looks like it walked straight out of Pet Sematary or even off of Alice In Chains’ album Tripod—but the times have changed and shelters have mutts, purebreds and everything in-between.

Not to mention, many of these animals have already been trained and gotten past the beginning stages, they’re just waiting in for a new home—no training required.

Valentine's weekend also happens to be National Adoption Weekend. So, if you're considering making a Valentine's addition to your family, stop by PACC because they'll be holding free adoptions for National Adoption Weekend. Some fees may apply.

· Friday, Feb. 12: Noon-7 p.m.

If you're one of many Tucsonans who caught a mean case of jaguar fever after footage of the rare predator in the Santa Rita mountains was released last week, you can hang out with like-minded El Jefe fans and learn more about the native cat at an event hosted by the Center for Biological Diversity.

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the organization will be hosting an event at Barrio Brewing Co. (800 E. 16th St.) to shed some light on the country's only known wild jag. The event, which runs from 6 until 9 p.m., will include unreleased photos and video of El Jefe, along with other northern jaguars. Free snacks will be served to pair with Barrio's new thematically-appropriate brew, the Santa Rita Jefeweizen.

The Night of the Jaguar also aims to inform attendees about threats to El Jefe and his habitat, including the proposed Rosemont Mine and existing border security policies.

The event is free to attend, but organizers ask that you RSVP if you plan on joining.

Remember when the Humane Society of Southern Arizona rescued 23 dogs from New Mexico?

Some are now available for adoption, including Habanero!

This cutie is two years old about as playful as they come. He is very treat motivated and is excited about learning commands and being rewarded. He would do great with an active family for hiking, running and jogging!

Stop by HSSA Main Campus at 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd. to do a doggy meet and greet!

Whether you're a fan of cats or a general fan of adorable animations, I have a game for you.

Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is a Japanese cat game that has been sweeping through our iPhones in the cutest and most relaxing way. The app, rated number 104 on the Apple App Store free top charts, has become a main focus for many blogs, as well as my own daily life.

Think you might enjoy putting out virtual food and toys and waiting for virtual cats to arrive in your virtual yard? I definitely do.

First, you have to set up your yard. Then tiny cats, all with a different preset names, interests, and personalities will begin to visit, leaving fish treats as a reward for your kindness. You can then use those fish treats to buy more goodies for them. If you are lucky (and generous), a rare and limited-edition cat may visit you.

I am not too embarrassed to say that I've spent days saving up for the highest quality animated food and cat accouterments. Only the best for my (digital) kitty cats!

But be warned: this could happen to you. If you need help succeeding in this a cat-eat-cat world, visit gameskinny.com.

The only wild jaguar in the U.S. lives in the Santa Rita Mountains outside Tucson. We've been waiting to see live footage of him, and it's our lucky day today: environmental groups have released a rare video of the jaguar, named El Jefe, roaming the Santa Ritas.

The Center for Biological Diversity and Conservation CATalyst, a former program within the UA, have been collaborating in a video project to monitor the endangered jaguar and ocelot in the southeastern Arizona mountain range. Chris Bugbee, a biologist with Conservation CATalyst, has collected data on the jaguar for the past three years, a Center for Biological Diversity press release says.

El Jefe has been often photographed by remote sensor cameras in the Santa Ritas over the past few years. But this is the first-ever publicly released video of him.

He is the only verified jaguar in the country, since another, known as Macho B, was euthanized in March 2009. Environmental groups are fighting hard for the species preservation, especially as the Rosemont Copper open-pit mine continues to loom over the Santa Ritas.
The mile-wide open pit and 800-foot-high piles of toxic mine waste would permanently destroy thousands of acres of occupied, federally protected jaguar habitat where this jaguar lives.
“The Rosemont Mine would destroy El Jefe’s home and severely hamstring recovery of jaguars in the United States,” said a prepared statement from Randy Serraglio, conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity. “At ground zero for the mine is the intersection of three major wildlife corridors that are essential for jaguars moving back into the U.S. to reclaim lost territory. The Santa Rita Mountains are critically important to jaguar recovery in this country, and they must be protected.”

Watch the footage:

Conservation CATalyst and the Center for Biological Diversity released new video today of the only known wild jaguar currently in the United States.Captured on remote sensor cameras in the Santa Rita Mountains just outside of Tucson, the dramatic footage provides a glimpse of the secretive life of one of nature’s most majestic and charismatic creatures. This is the first-ever publicly released video of the #jaguar, recently named 'El Jefe' by Tucson students, and it comes at a critical point in this cat’s conservation.
